Title: Opening Prayer - Kansas Senate
Post by echo on Jul 18th, 2003, 7:51am
Thought you might enjoy this  interesting prayer given in Kansas at a previous opening session of their Senate. It  seems prayer still upsets some people. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of  the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your  forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says,  'Woe to those
who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have
done. We  have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess that we have
ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called
it  Pluralism. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and  called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have  neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. We have  abused power and called
it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions
and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography  and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values
of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh, God, and know our  hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these  men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center of Your will and to  openly ask these things in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus  Christ. Amen!"

The response was immediate. A number of legislators
walked  out during the prayer in protest.

In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where
Rev. Wright  is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for
copies of this prayer from India, Africa, and Korea.

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio program, "The Rest of the Story," and received a  larger response to this program than any other he has ever
aired.

With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our
nation  and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called "one nation under God."

Hit a little close to home?

I wonder,

If the Good Minister opened the Supreme Court session with those words,

How many judges would walk out?

I remember hearing about this a number of years ago. I think it was sometime back in the 90's when he actually prayed that prayer, but it still hits home today. Thank you for reminding me about it.

Take care

They should not be praying before the opening of the senate in any case.  Who gives a rat's fanny WHAT was discussed....

Period.

It's the goddamn Consitution.  Sheesh.

To play Devil's Advocate (never mind the pun)  If there is a prayer, why was it a Christian prayer?  Why mention Christ at all???

Because people in Kansas (and most likely the rest of the U.S.) are backwater jackasses.  And these are the same people who were FIRST in line to condemn those not a very nice persons who flew those planes into the WTC in the name of RELIGION.

A rose by any other name.

Need further proof?  See the Crusades.

Separate Church and State.  End of the discussion.

This "prayer" is for the weak-minded....

This brings up an interesting topic. Probably not one well discused on a forum, but what the hell. Religion is most certianly a mess. To even be at the point where we are "seperating" it from "state" is sign enough of how ridicoulus and cheesy religion has become. Faith in "God" or some sandal wearing savior should be a personal matter, never thrown in someones face or even brought up in a senate meeting. If your God does exist, I can assure you of one thing, he does not "bless" or have anything to do with America. If he does, he is a complete idiot who has WAY too much time on his hands.

One more thing, this is no longer a nation. It's not "one nation under God" anymore, America has become an empire. A nation is people made up of common blood, common religion, common goals and a common bond. Empires consist of peoples of different religions, languages, cultures, races and nationalities. An empire is a goverment that rules over several different ethnic classes of people, geographicly large, being spread out all over, wiping out any opposing goverments of other "nations", and instilling "puppet goverments" in their place.  This is why you offend the raghead or some guy from timbuktoo when you try to teach the gospel in school. This is why our moral entity, has completely crumbled and we will soon be facing an internal turmoil. America has become an empire, and like every other empire that has ever existed, it is sure to crumble.

Loco. Yes, if we use your definitions then you're right. But it also means we've been an empire from day one and never a nation. But, unfortunately, your definitions leave a lot lacking.

"A nation is people made up of common blood, common religion, common goals and a common bond."

Yeah, many nations do have this in common. Mainly the totalitarian ones. But from the birth of our nation we had many people of different religions, cultures, (can't say blood because everyone in the world has common blood, unless you mean blood types such as O-negative versus B-negative. I don't think any land mass has their people sharing the same types, so what does that mean?). Common goals and common bonds I can't speak of either because it's so vague.

"Empires consist of peoples of different religions, languages, cultures, races and nationalities."

As I said, this means we've been an empire from day one.

And stop with the damned religious symbols like the Star of David and Crosses that get put up on public land.

I say we storm Arlington and give it a good cleaning.  :'(

This kind of stuff is a big waste of time from where I sit. Prayers by most midwestern legislators, with their stellar preformances in civil rights and progressive politics, is just one of many things done help delay serious and uselful debate. It looks pretty dumb too. In fact it's incredibly dumb and has become a vote-getter for those with double digit IQs. Ain't a goddam thing we can do about it though without incurring more of this shit.

Let em have their silly fun. They thrive on this kind of attention.

There is no Minister, Reverand, Priest, Pope, Senator or Shaman alive that will dictate to me who my God will be.

Great prayer, inappropriate ending.

Yes Brian. I must agree. You talk blaphemous of the Lord, our God. That's my job.  Some places in this country have been hit by a drought and your lassez-faire attitude reminds me very much of their attitude of anyone who asks for gov't assistance who hasn't been hit by a drought! Those "others" are welfare kids. Suffer from a drought and you're a poor soul in need.
Then you dare to say that when we persecute people based on their religion it is bad. What the hell don't you understand? We do it to muslims. It's not like we do it to our own. Oh you liberals who think the constitution should be applied to anyone who is not me.

If I were attempting to post something that was not CH related and was guaranteed to seperate us into warring camps...it would be this post.

A hand grenade buried in a piece of cake and set in the middle of our circle.

Seeds of truth and manipulation from the heartland.

Do you feel yer strings being pulled?

Yes indeed Rumple. Politics and Religion mixed together can produce interesting results.

Really people, to each thier own. Live and let live.

I do find it kind of funny per "bible belt" standards that ALL of CHINA is going to hell!  :o

Just wait until Mr. Graham take over as Pres, then the true fun will begin. Perhaps a great pilgramage from the US to England will take place.

Respect and admire ones diferences. Be kind.

I find it especially interesting that so many alleged followers of possibly the most peaceful person in history exhibit such anger and vitriol toward their fellow human beings.
