Title: rabid catipillars Post by cootie on Jul 12th, 2003, 1:37am Hey guys......has anyone ever been bit by a ......ummmm......fuzzy lill catipillar ?? I got bit yesturday by one crawlin up my shirt and swatted at it......bit me in the neck......got a welt the size of a golf ball on my neck and a horrible rash (I'm the rash queen anyhow)......it was a canary yellow one with fuzzy long black long hair horns on each end. Freaked me out....so let this be a warning to you all.........attack of the killer catipillars....beware !!!! It packed a mean wallup I must say ! Course this shit only happens to me.......rite ? When wolly worms attack Pam Coots........dont ask me what this has to do with CH cuz I couldn't answer that question........fuzzy wuzzy waz a bear....fuzzy wuzy had no hair.........fuzzy wazzy wasn't very fuzzy waz he ? |

Several caterpillar species have evolved hollow urticating hairs which can contain venom. The most notables that come to my mind are several species in the Family Saturniidae (giant silkworm moths) and the smaller unusual looking saddleback caterpillar (and other species in the Family Limacodidae). He swelled, got a rash and was sick to his stomach. They're now on my vined plants...it's that time of the year, and other than getting near enough to put poison on the plants, we are staying clear of them. Once bitten, twice shy. |

Benedryl should still help, but if it doesn't get better in a day or two or gets worse, get thee to a doctor. It is best not to touch any caterpillar that has what looks like spines or hair or fur. (I may be wrong, but I think there is even a species of caterpillar that looked like what we called wooly bears that has poisonous hairs/spines/fur. Ever been bitten by a praying mantis or a grasshopper? LOL! No poison, but can definitely let you know they are irritated! Sherry who learned early about "crudapelters" (That was my first attempt as a child at the word. My aunt who has a big time fear and loathing of caterpillars (not unlike my fear and loathing of spiders...STEVE!) said that my word was the best word ever for them LOL!) |

Prolly was a double headed cootie infested coot biter creepy crawler......swell. My neck looks NASTY...got a solid rash the sizea my hand. Yes Sherry, I've been bitten by a praying mantis... trying to move it to a safer location. I was surprised. I was also surprised when I was bitten by a grasshopper, but I deserved that one... I needed him for entomology class. I think you're right, there are some venomous wooly bear caterpillars. re spiders: Spiders get free roam of my apartment... any enemies of flies are a friend of mine. I believe they are being accidentally transported to the northeast, someone at work suffered from what I believe to be the bite of a brown recluse. It ain't pretty. Yeah I didn't think the brown recluse was native to the northeast, but I have killed 2 of them here, and one girl got bit by one when they were on a field exercise, it had crawled into her sleeping bag. He called out, "don't come in the kitchen" .. so of course I went in the kitchen. Saw this tarantula size spider (looked like a wolf spider) and screamed and it ran under the stove. I jumped on the table and refused to get down til it was dead LOL Clark was spraying it with raid and I told him to step on it, his reply was "Fuck no!!! It will eat my foot!" LOL Just stay in a hotel and not a house where they have the chance to live and grow, and grow, and grow.... hehe |

If I'd of known he was gonna win I wouldn't of settled for the free hotdog at the enda the run and had him take me out ta eat. Oh and hey my rash is goin down.......man was it nasty and still feels hot. That catipillar that bit or stung me looked so ratty and spiney......probly was a misfit. We got sum big spiders here.....had one teeny black mean lill spider fall...or did it jump....off the rear view mirror in my car and dangle on a thin web in fronta my face......I almost wrecked !!! I thought that one was the PUS caterpiller... which totally grossed me out and I quickly clicked to the next one! LOL! I've read that there are other spiders besides the brown recluse or black widow that can cause the "necrotic tissue" type bites... some look like your common "corner spiders" What ever.............I HATE SPIDERS !!!!! My hubby saves me from spiders and I save him from snakes.... luckily we have run into far fewer snakes than spiders. Sherry |

She must of mention'd it to the doc before he came in the room cuz when I started to ask him about it he said....oh the catipillar bite ? I felt so stupid but he said there is sum sort of widow catipillar he knows of that is venomous around here. I ain't found a pic of it yet on the internet....lite yellow spiney body with those long black hair horns that stuck out. My rash is still bad.....doesn't itch as much but I have a HUGE lump and rash all around it hand size. Entire thing is creepin me out.....esp since I still have the lump and itch all over off and on spells. Been takein benydryl at nite. One bitten twice shy Pam |
