I sit in a control room in front of 27 monitors with 10 keyboards. Plus 5 redundent computers, 5 back-up computers, plus 5 alternet computers.

I have the most boring job in the world but what-the-hell, it pays the bills and I don't have to sweat or get my hands dirty. The toughest part of the job is the coffee pot. It's in the kitchen more than 20 steps away. That's 40 steps X 15 or 20 trips every day.

Whew! That's it for now. Coffee break.......#8.

Actually my official title is (Bulk energy) Transmission and Distribution System Operator.

Well, my partner Cees works for the town council of a small town near here, but he will start a new job for  our own city council in two weeks, which will mean a lot less travelling and hassle for him.

I have always earned my own bread, married or single, though the bread was sometimes stale and had nothing much on it.

I work free lance, as a writer of book reports and occasional copywriter, but  mostly as a translator of fiction. I have specialised in the field of Science Fiction and Fantasy but I have worked on cookery books and juvenile fiction as well.  I stopped counting some time ago, but the tally must stand at about 200 titles by now.

I manage a team of staff responsible for process documentation.  Basically we capture how you perform your job and get it on paper.  Became a much more important task after 17,000 employees were let go.  Many of them were the only ones who knew how to perform their function.  After the intellect walked out the door no one knew what to do and things not only fell through the cracks, they fell into the gapping holes that were left behind.

BTW --- BORING BORING BORING -- pays the bills.

I do a lot of things, and it depends on the time of year as to what is actually paying.

Rancher (full-time work, and it always needs to run at a loss for tax reasons), then parts of the year I work as a catastrophic insurance adjuster when on the road with my husband, thankfully I can pick and chose when I want to do this.  I am also a high school teacher (although I will have to be awfully broke to go back to that work), writer (doesn't pay much yet, but I live in hope!!!)

But if you ask my friends....they say I 'do' Greg for a living..... ;D.  He's the one that actually makes money....LOL.

Title: Re: How do you bring home the bacon?
Post by SommelierCH on Jun 30th, 2003, 10:15pm
I love my job. I can’t wait to go to work every night. I get paid to drink. I am a professional Sommelier. I have studied wine, beer and spirits professionally for 28 years. I work nights at a very high-end restaurant in downtown Beverly Hills, filled with celebrities and power brokers. Every night when I go into work there are people (wine makers, owners, reps) waiting, with wine in their hands, for me to taste and evaluate their wines, hoping that I will buy some.

Since choosing a wine can be so confusing, and it’s so easy to get ripped off; people tend to come back to visit me because I never do a hard-sell and try to talk someone into a wine more expensive than they wanted (even though I get paid by commission), I never have mediocre wines on my list, so you don’t have to know a lot to get a good bottle, I have a laid back (buzzed) attitude, and I’m not French.

I also, do consulting for new restaurants, and revamp wine lists for old restaurants. Sometimes I will put together a wine cellar for a personal home. Since my Sommelier award, I have been able to boost my fee’s a little.

I moonlight with professional photography: resume photos and headshots for the acting biz. (When in Rome…)

I am hoping some real money will be made with my “Wine and Food Adventure” interactive television show, which I am writing, filming and editing. It’s geared to a younger audience than represented on the food channel and alcohol is much more predominant. I have about 16 hours of tape from wineries, restaurants and celebrity interviews at their homes. I have had a union acting card since 1976, so it’s not like I’m a stranger to the business. Sometimes if you want something done, you just have to do it yourself.

David J.

P.S. klp, may God bless you.

I suckered the coni-sewers, again. My true forte, is being an expert on cheap wines. Don’t get me wrong, I am given many bottles, of expensive wine, as samples to try. Just last Sunday, Carlo Mondavi (Robert Mondavi’s grandson), gave me two bottles of Opus One and two bottles of Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, to take home.

However, last week, when Carole Burnett asked me where I shop for wine, and I told her, “the Rite-Aid 24hr. Drug Store, on Cannon”, she almost blew a gasket. Then she asked me how big my wine cellar was at home, and when I said “Zero Bottles, but a couple of 5 liter boxes of generic Cabernet”, she went ahead and blew.

Don’t confuse what I drink for free at work, with what I drink on my own money. ;D  I enjoy simple wine, at home, it’s an everyday beverage. Let the fruit of the vine show through, with very, little manipulation by man. That translates to good, yet cheap. ;D

At home, I drink “Peter Vella” (made by Gallo, as are two of the five luscious, mind-benders in the picture above) Cabernet, Merlot or Burgundy (in descending order) out of 5 liter boxes. They are always on sale at Rite-Aid (still open when I get off work), $9-11 for the 5 liter box of Cab. The Mylar bladder inside, collapses as the wine is used, keeping oxygen from entering and turning the remaining wine in the box, sour. It will remain fresh for a long time.

I drink red wine at home, so that I don’t lose any beer-space in the fridge.

It’s also my cooking wine.

Just so you don’t think that I am pulling your collective legs, here is a picture of my empties from this weekend. I included the last 2 healing dolls plus my Orange Doll, in the picture to give it a time frame.

Box wine is also great for your earthquake/disaster/terrorist stash. It won’t break, and it is a welcome relief, when things calm down.

I have a peasant point of view, but that’s cool. I’m a cheap date.

I'm a test pilot for La-Z-Boy recliners ;D

I own a communication cabling company specializing in the installation of voice, data and fiber-optic networks for the commercial business world. I have 12 employees and am located in the Milwaukee Wi. area. (Plug) but we will travel.

After paying the union benefits for my employees and double taxes for being self-employed, there isn't much bacon left to bring home.

But what the heck, I love paying double taxes as long as it benefits some total stranger that gets to sit on his/her lazy ass and do nothing all day!

Maybe I should close the business, but why should they have to suffer. (Sarcasm)

The Wiggles are a group of 4 guys from Australia.  They met while they were in college as Early Education majors.  They are now gajillionaires.  They sing and dance and have "good messages" interspersed in there too so it's not all fluff.  There is also a usual cast of characters who hang with them:  Captain Feathersword the friendly pirate, Dorothy the Dinosaur who eats only roses, Henry the Octopus (who wears a plaid suit and a straw boater, so he is representin' his old money peeps), etc.

They are a lot of fun.  When I saw them in concert in Charleston, I noticed there were 12 year olds there too lovin' it.  I'd much rather my daughter watch them when she is 12 than that 14 minutes and 59 seconds skank Britney Spears.

Captain's magic buttons,
He's got half a dozen.
Makes him sing in different ways!!!

I'm  a litigation database administrator for an IP lawfirm. The nuts an bolts of it is I compile the data for the litigations (lawsuits--excess of 1,000 hence we need databases), image documents (via vendor), produce these docs either electronically or paper to other side, coalate the data, store to a server, copy to another server and take to the hotel where the trial is located, and set up the network in the hotel so the team can access e-mail and everything else like they were sitting at thier desk at the firm.
Previously I was a high school Technology Education and Photography Teacher and before that I was an enlisted man in the Coast Guard.

This week I:
Spend a day crawling around under an old building to locate the dead thing that was stinkin.
Made some building signs, located the source of a foundation leak, installed an analog phone line in an office, cleaned out the rain guage on a weather station, set up tables for a meeting, set the thermostats for the week, updated some spreadsheets, fixed a stapler, some kids toy and a water hose, repaired a sump pump, updated voicemail, caught a mouse, replaced a desk, cut open a lock box, carried boxes for lazy fat people....I've been the "operations guy" for a huge Catholic Church and School for 13 years. http://shconroe.org/

During that I have done voice overs for commercials, actor in Dinner theater, taught acting...Prior to that I was a remodeling contractor, trim carpenter, painter, chimney sweep, newspaper photographer and columnist, HVAC repairman, mobile home service manager, janitor, dairy/tobacco farm hand, cab driver, Co Director and Founder of a Free Store and Recycling Center, junkman, Reality Therapist, orderly at a geriatric home, surveyers helper on a pipeline,Skidder driver and choker setter for logging, sold appliances and drugs, worked in a "head shop", owned and ran a wholesale florist.....

What a long strange trip it's been

I am a computer consultant who has corporate clients, but my specialty is 911 center design, implementation, and maintenance.  I also help our company administer the longest running performance contract in US Government History as the sole communications provider for Whiteman Air Force Base, home of the B-2 Stealth bomber.

On the weekends, I am a Southern Baptist minister who preaches in churches who have lost their pastor until they find a replacement.  We have had a lot of pastor's dying around here lately of strokes, heart attacks, and car accidents so I have been busy.

I also sing professionally with more than 50 concerts performed annually in the United States and abroad.  I used to perform at Disney's Epcot Center.  I have sung on a Carnival Cruise Line, I did a 5 1/2 month concert tour to Europe, plus my U.S. tours which have taken me to NYC, Chicago, Utah, Nashville, and all points between.  Since I lived in Florida, I did hundreds of concerts across the sunshine state from Homestead to just west of Tallahackme.
