Title: Re: Dont let this happen to you! Post by Mark C on Jun 29th, 2003, 8:51am Hey Dude, I also AVG on one PC at work, got bugbear b within 12 hours of it's release! Not the AV softwaare's fault, just a bunch of destructive bastards on the net. I have been updating it EVERY day for the last week. There have been new definitions daily for the last few days. Stay on top of it folks. Most of these critters can be removed without too much trouble...kinda like a splinter...it's still an aggravation. Be careful out there. http://www.markusjansson.net/ http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp http://www.cert.org/current/ |

Title: Re: Dont let this happen to you! Post by Mark C on Jun 29th, 2003, 9:38am I use Norton 2002, updated daily at home. $16 and change for the yearly subscription. It has intercepted a couple in the last year. I have never had a virius at home. Our corporate network has Norton Corporate...no virius (viri?) in the last 2 years...at least not in our LAN. The only reason AVG let the last bug by was this particular PC is in a semi-public area and someone probally had it in there e-mail. Even though said box han bugbear b, which disables the AV software, I was able to update the AVG anyway, clean the infected files (MS Word.exe, Media Player.exe, notepad.exe, etc) and do a repair re-install, which just replaces the missing files, and lost no information. Pretty good for a freebie! The only thing is updating 2 or 3 times a day for now might not be a bad idea. I would suggest running only one AV application at a time....sometimes more is not better! There have been at least 18 new bugs (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html) identified by Symantic this last week alone! Stick with the AVG for now...it's better than some pay proggies....just hit the update button at least every day right now. Go here (http://www.dslreports.com/secureme) and test your security. Good for the firewall test....happy surfing! Mark |

Title: Re: Dont let this happen to you! Post by Marc on Jun 29th, 2003, 9:49am Mark, Good point - I've always used Nortons and simply updated weekly. I think more frequent updates may be a really good idea if a person is on their PC daily like many of are. Marc |

Title: Re: Dont let this happen to you! Post by fubar on Jun 30th, 2003, 11:03am I use McAfee Online. It updates itself in realtime. If a new virus comes out, they notify your computer so it can tell you to download an update. This has been perfect protection for me for years. You pay a yearly fee for the service, and it's worth every penny. -Shawn |
