Title: HSG needs a new server!
Post by Elaine on Jun 27th, 2003, 6:01pm
The server we have now, has informed us after putting Michelle through pure hell, that we need a dedicated server.  I been checking out servers who offer this but man the price is so high. Anyone got any ideas or know of a server that can handle cgi scrips.

I am copying and pasting the email we got today telling us what the problem is with chat.

The program in question implements a chat room as a cgi script.  While this is a novel approach, it is
unfortunately a very inefficient way to chat.  Every time someone says something in the chat, blueHALO runs a new copy of your cgi which writes what was said to a
file.  blueHALO has many users and each user can run cgi programs.  Because some programs can be very
wasteful of system resources, there are limits in place.  If there were no limits, wasteful programs would quickly consume all the available resources in blueHALO, and
nothing would get served at all.  When you see those timeouts or "white screens", I
think one of your chat cgi programs has reached one of those limits and been killed by the system.  Since this is a correct and proper function of the system, I cannot
"fix" it for you.  You could upgrade to a dedicated solution where all the systems resources would be available to you and run your chat cgi there, or you
could find another provider who specializes in chat room hosting (as opposed to blueHALO which
specializes in web page serving) and host your chat room with them.  If you do wish to go dedicated, our sales department will be happy to assist you.

Help you guys !

There has got to be a server that can handle chat that doesn't cost a arm and a leg. I been looking all afternoon.
Chat will work out we just got to figure out where to move it and what server to use for it.
Thanks woobie we will worry about money after we find a server!

Jackie, hostpro the one we were using sold to interland, interland manually moved the site to another computer. Then chat started actting up. Host pro told us we needed more space bandwith so it was moved by Michelle to another computer that had more. Chat just got worst. This seems to be what they are telling us now.

Elaine, here is one solution that may be free, You can open a room in a dedicated chat server like dalnet where you would keep a room open with a bot, which would mean that someone whould have to keep a constant internet connection to keep the room, that way it would be easy for everyone to find it becouse you weould always havw the same name. The program is on the users computer mrlic or a java type program that they can download to from your website. I'm sure there are other ways that the more informed members will be able to recommend. I believe this is free but if you want someone with moderator status that is a paid service. I'll check it out tonight.

Check your IMs.   The problem is probably easily remedied.

Opus,
Everyone seems to like the type of chat room we have the style. We would like to keep it. I can go $59. a month if I have to but I can't go a $100 a month.  I was paying $ $29.95 a month for this. Before that I was paying by the year $210 a year. I can pay but just not a $100 a month hell thats $1200 a year. Buddy would kill me.

DALnet is a volunteer service, the style of the chat would be  what program everyone uses and the settings they use. It appears that you need to have a installed IRC chat program to see the web site. Keep this on hold in case you cannot come up with another solution.  I know several web page who use this system for there chat. It sounds like what you have is novel and just need some tweaks. Look for updated software for the program.

Dalnet, Undernet etc. are IRC so you would need a stable IRC server. I'm not sure if you can do that with Microsoft IIS products.
You could do it with a cheap computer you get at a garage sale running FreeBSD or Linux with a 24/7 connection.
Not sure how comfortable you would be with it.

Email me if you want the gory details.

Everyone,
It looks like Grant has an easy solution, That is if the sever administrator knows what they are doing, hopefully that will fix E's problem.

Kirk,
Can stable and Microsoft can be used in the same sentence?

Just a thought but I have used IRC for years & never had a problem, I also have a bot, script & access to a "have it live on a server" to keep the room open...I can have a room up & running in a day or so if ya need it :)

P.S. I will leave it to the group, but if you decide to do this, we could name the bot whatever we want..it has to have a name..ie:the beast, Vera, dancer..whatever...

I know a bit about computers, but not a damn thing about chat rooms.

How many in this group are using cable for internet access? DSL? ISDN?

Maybe we can negotiate some free services in the interest of public health (God knows how many we'd kill if we all lost our minds at once).

Does anyone work for a company with some extra bandwidth?  Servers are cheap, there is obviously some intelligence on this site, we should be able to setup and drop in a server.

Contributions could also work, just with the people that responded to this post we are looking at less than $15 per person per month.  And I am positive we could scrounge up more than 8 people.

Just drunk and tossing ideas, g'nite.

KOP

This isn't a OUCH thing , and its not the money thats the problem. I know we can find a place for chat for less than what these people want. I think Michelle and I will find a cheaper server, or figure away to fix this. I just figured maybe some of you knew a good server.
I emailed with Michelle and she is going to look into it when she gets home.
I haven't been in chat so I don't know how well its working right now.
Are you guys still having the same problems if so let us know.
