Title: To Rumple....care of the hermit crab Post by Donna on Jun 25th, 2003, 10:35am I am the proud owner of a healthy and happy hermit crab. I buy one shrimp from the grocery store and give him little snips of it every other day. He also eats Hermit Crab Food from the local pet shop. You must provide him with material to bury himself in to shed his skeleton periodically, as he grows. I use sand mixed with tiny stones from the pet store. He also needs a swimming pool with a sponge from which to suck up water. An absolute must is a selection of light weight shells to relocate into as he grows. Be sure to allow him to walk around on your hands and arms to keep him people-friendly. I have mine in a small aquriam, with a small cup half buried in the sand in which he sleeps. His name is Hermie and I love the stupid critter. |

Sure wish you'd been around to offer this advice when I was a lil girl though. I read Den's post to Ted about the Hermit Crab and I had a flashback that struck terror in my heart! When I was about 8, my mom took me on the train out to Vancouver. My first time ever to the ocean, so of course I had to collect some shells. I proudly laid out my collection on the floor of our cabin on the train on the way home. Much to my chagrin, one of my shells got up and WALKED ACROSS THE ROOM. :o Once I quit screaming, I decided this was kinda cool so I didn't tell my mom. Insted, in my 8 year old brilliance, I put my walking shell into a pill vial - I figured out that he must be a hermit crab and that he could live in there, quite nicely - it would be our lil secret. (See, I didn't know all this stuff you just told us here at that point.) I would like to add one thing to your Care and Feeding of Hermit Crabs though, Donna. Do NOT put them in pill jars. They smell REALLY bad when you remember to open up the lid to visit them a few days later. :-/ p.s. I called my hermit crab "Hermie" too, Donna!! Maybe they were related? |

He shed a few tears and curled up in his shell. I'll treat him to something special for dinner tonight. Ever hear of cochinas? They are little bitty closed shells that make beautiful butterflies when you glue them together with hot glue. They don't smell very good either after awhile. Oh dear, I think Hermie just had an accident. He was upside down on the top of his aquariam and fell straight down on his back. Gotta go now. |

BUTT...as I jumped up and down pointin at the puter, yellin "hey Georgia...Donna tells us how to care for....." She inturupts with a snotty..."but thats LAAAAAAND crabs ... theres lots of info on them!!!"...smart ass lil know-it-all. Our "Hermie" came from the salt water of the gulf. Is yer info still good Donna? Do they need salt water? Relocate? His shell is a conch already 4 inches long...would an old shoe work? I'm posting this instead of e-mail because there may be other married Clusterhead couples with crabs that may benefit from this exchange. love den |
