Title: All Ch'ers Please Reply
Post by Georgia on Jun 24th, 2003, 6:09pm
For the sake of research:

Three simple questions:

1) Is your ring finger longer than your index finger?

2) Is your 2nd toe longer than your big toe?

3) Chronic or episodic?

(For me: yes to 1 + 2, chronic)

1--...ok ....define ring finger...

left dorsal arm or ventral appendage?

2--... 2nd toe on which *rank* of motile ambulatory digits?

22nd 0r 23rd?
(this is IMPORTANT to specify, due to the circularity of heterogenous hyperboles....no?)

2--...sidereal or hyper-phasic? re: chronic or episodic..doh!

given this specificity....I *may* respond.... or not....

;)

(can *Sonny's* respond to this survey?)

double  ;) ;)

p.s. I'm gonna add one more into the mix here... kinda gross, but... ingrown toenails anyone?  (I think that's going to be heavily yes from the few I've asked this question of in the past.)

p.p.s.  oh, and Mike's a boy.  I checked that, too.

Absolutely fascinating!

Just checked my kids too, my son's fingers are the same length, and my daughters ring finger is longer than index.  I sincerely hope they aren't finished growing!  I would hate to think there is a true correlation here and my kids could end up with this!

Index slightly longer than ring finger (not even a millimetre difference).

Second toe both sides is a hammer toe. If it would straigthen out it might prove longer than the big toe.

I don't know whether I am chronic or episodic. The attacks don't hurt any more but I feel them almost every day. So?

OK, I had to do it - I had to tally these results.  This is exciting!

Total respondents (who actually did answer the question):  55
Male Chronics: 7
Female Chronics: 7
Male Episodics: 20
Female Episodics: 21

6/7 male chronics have longer ring fingers - 86%
5/7 male chronics have longer 2nd toes - 71%

7/7 female chronics have longer ring fingers - 100%!!!
3/7 female chronics have longer 2nd toes - 43% ??

18/20 male episodics have longer ring fingers - 90%
12/20 male episodics have longer 2nd toes - 60%

16/20 female episodics have longer ring fingers - 80%
10/21 female episodics have longer 2nd toes - 48%

All male chronics answered yes to at least one of the questions.
All female chronics answered yes to at least one of the questions.
One male episodic answered no to both questions.
Three female episodics answered no to both questions.

I'm thinking you folks who answered no to both just MIGHT want to get a second opinion on your diagnosis - this is an OVERWHELMINGLY positive survey.  In my years here, I've NEVER seen anything swayed so much to one side here.

So, therefore..... are misproportionate (is that a word?) digits indicative of an enlarged hypothalmus as well as an overabundance of testosterone?  Too cool.  OUCH should be forwarding these findings to Dr. Goadsby!!

p.s.  just can't stop analyzing this:
89% of clusterheads (combined) have longer ring fingers!
55.5% of clusterheads (combined) have longer second toes!

I think that should be the new Cluster Salute - the extended ring finger.  (Sorta like Spock with his funky Vulcan V thing he does for a salute.)

Margi, I am going for a new diagnosis now !!!!!!!!!!  LOL.  For real though, I have one had one cycle which lasted 4 months.  I truly, truly, believe that this was brought about by being put on Paxil and going off of it a month later ............ I think my serotonin got screwed up and brought on the clusters.  I am NOT a fake ...... I had clusters and know how painful they are.  Never want to go in to cycle again.  But am I hoping the Paxil caused the cycle ..........do I want to prove I am a clusterhead by going in to cycle again ???????? NO FUCKING WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!

This might help with your survey results.  Now, if my fingers starts to change shapes ........................... OH SHIT .......... I'll be in touch !!!!!!!!!!  LOL ............. and hoping for NEVER AGAIN ANOTHER CLUSTER !!!!!!!!!!  I got the fingers for it !!!!!!!!

I'm not saying anyone's a fake, Nancy - that really was just an off the wall way of me emphasizing how amazing these results are.  We've NEVER had a survey here be so completely one-sided.
If we can find an accurate cluster diagnostic tool that is as simple as this, we're miles ahead in research towards a cure, right?  The thermal imaging studies for diagnosis are exciting, but how long do you have to wait to get tested and how much does it cost?  Most  people carry their fingers and toes around with them for free.

Title: Re: All Ch'ers Please Reply
Post by catlind on Jun 26th, 2003, 11:08am
Margi, I agree, this is very exciting news.

Perhaps we can tally this up as a prelim and have the OUCH UK folks ask Prof. Goadsby about it.

I've been trying to get together a question for him that I have regarding his book and a non traditional treatment, but just don't have the neurobiology background to get it right.

I will see if I can get it set up in a database and we can continue to add to the numbers for both sides of the equation.

This truly is fascinating!!!
Even thought I was really hoping that I was misdiagnosed and wasn't a clusterhead :(  Ah well, guess you're all stuck with me :P)

I am one of them who answered no to both questions. My ring finger is definitely not as long as the index. My toes are about the same size but the second one doesnt appear to be longer. They can measure them at the convention and see what they think.  :D
But trust me after 22 years of CH every year I dont think I need to be rediagosed.  :-/
Great job you did on the survey and very interesting too.

Title: Re: All Ch'ers Please Reply
Post by oringkid on Jun 26th, 2003, 11:35am
The thing is, I know a LOT of people who don't get ch that have their 2 toe longer than the big toe!

My daughter's ring finger is MUCH longer than her index and she doesn't get ch.  I was wrong, I was wrong, I was wrong, wrong wrong.  Sorry.  I was a$$uming and made an a$$ of me! LOL

Although the results are pretty amazing, without a control group (Georgia, the NON-Ch'er responses would be interesting) we don't know much.  I have a funny feeling that you might find that a LOT of people have these anomallies.  Or maybe the longer fingers and toes is the norm and the short ones are anomallies!

But it IS fun! LOL!  And could lead us to finding something simple like it that indicated definitively whether or not a person has CH or even WILL have CH in the future!

Cool....
Now, where are some more of those song titles!!

Title: Re: All Ch'ers Please Reply
Post by Georgia on Jun 26th, 2003, 12:57pm
Margi - you are too funny. I tallied them last night at about 4 am, but was waiting to get the non-ch'er replies first to see if this truly is a characteristic of chs.

As a side note, our chronic male that answered "no" changed his answer to "yes" last night. He was measuring the actual length of his ring finger, not putting his fingers together and seeing how they sit naturally. When sitting naturally, his ring finger is longer than his index. That gives us 100% of the chronic males.

I think we first need to take these results and compare them to the regular population, and then we need to re-ask everyone this question with a definitive way of measuring the length of the fingers.  I agree though that these initial stas look amazing to me. Very exciting. I think the toe results are pretty average, though. Although from what I have read on the internet, only 20% of the population has their 2nd toe longer...just don't know how definitive that is. I think the ring finger results are really the key here.

What we really need is for everyone to look at people's fingers today - people that ARE NOT RELATED TO A CH - and post those results in the other thread, before anything is sent to anyone!!

Get finger watching!!

Example..

Everyone collected different data, so your answers would not be the same as these. This is just a sample for one such set of data.
For the first case, x is the ring finger and y is the baby finger:
       x         y
       70        54
       81        60
       68        55
       80        65
       74        61
       68        55
       -----------------
Mean    73.5000   58.3333

The mean values are given by 73.5000 and 58.3333 respectively. Subtracting the mean values gives:

   x-x_bar   y-y_bar
  -3.5000   -4.3333
   7.5000    1.6667
  -5.5000   -3.3333
   6.5000    6.6667
   0.5000    2.6667
  -5.5000   -3.3333
  ------------------
   0         0

Note that these columns sum to zero.

Now set up a table with squares and products, and sum the columns:

   x²         x        x×y         y        y²
  12.2500   -3.5000   15.1667   -4.3333   18.7778
  56.2500    7.5000   12.5000    1.6667    2.7778
  30.2500   -5.5000   18.3333   -3.3333   11.1111
  42.2500    6.5000   43.3333    6.6667   44.4444
   0.2500    0.5000    1.3333    2.6667    7.1111
  30.2500   -5.5000   18.3333   -3.3333   11.1111
----------------------------------------------------
 171.5000         0  109.0000   -0.0000   95.3333

(The x and y in the column headings should be understood as deviations from the mean.)

From the sums, we can get

the slope b=109.00/171.50=0.6356
and
the correlation coefficient r=109.00/sqrt(171.5×95.33)=0.8525

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next analysis involves ring finger length as the x and nose length as the y.
       x     y
       70    50
       81    57
       68    50
       80    48
       74    46
       68    40
       -----------------
Mean    73.5000   48.5000

Using the same set-up as in part (a) we have:
   x²         x        x×y         y        y²
  12.2500   -3.5000   -5.2500    1.5000    2.2500
  56.2500    7.5000   63.7500    8.5000   72.2500
  30.2500   -5.5000   -8.2500    1.5000    2.2500
  42.2500    6.5000   -3.2500   -0.5000    0.2500
   0.2500    0.5000   -1.2500   -2.5000    6.2500
  30.2500   -5.5000   46.7500   -8.5000   72.2500
----------------------------------------------------
 171.5000         0   92.5000         0  155.5000

the slope b=92.500/171.50=0.5394
and

the correlation coefficient r=92.50/sqrt(171.5×155.50)=0.5664

If we interchange the role of explanatory and response variable, we
can use the same information as in the previous table, just interchange
the x and the y.

Thus we get

the slope b=92.500/155.50=0.5949
and

the correlation coefficient r=92.50/sqrt(171.5×155.50)=0.5664

We see that the correlation coefficient is the same in the two
cases.  The regression coefficients are different, however, and they
are not reciprocals of each other, because the lines are different, depending
on which is the explanatory variable.  In fact, the product of the
two regression coefficients is equal to the square of the correlation
coefficient.

Georgia, you're giving me a headache hon.

Sweetie....can't you think of something else to do on your honey-moon???  E-mail me.  I'll give you 3 suggestions and the first 2 don't count.

I know you mean well, so this post will self-destruct in 30 seconds.

So I'm kind of lost on question 1 still. When I look at my hand my ring finger appears longer since it extends up higher. But that's an illusion of being longer since the pointer finger actually starts at a lower point on the hand. When I place the base of my right ring finger in line with the base of my left pointer finger, the pointer is actually longer. So, when people answered were they just looking at one hand and seeing the ring finger appeared longer or did you actually compare them side by side. If the prior I bet there'd be a lot of revised answers. We probably should set a standard of measuring before we get too excited by the results.

Oh, and Mark, you just write the most beautiful poetry.

The baby finger and the nose? Where did that come from? Was that just a really long example for me? I was planning on testing this data with the non-ch'er data to see if it is statistically significant - ie, getting the p value. Maybe this was your way of volunteering? :) Let me know.

Way ahead of ya. But before I ask everyone to do that, I want to make sure it's worth it.

we need to re-ask everyone this question with a definitive way of measuring the length of the fingers.

I am psyched that we are still getting replies here. We really need as many replies as we can get both here and in the non-ch'er survey. Without the non-ch'ers to compare it to, this means nothing. Its like saying 90% of ch'ers have two arms. Handy to us, but it doesn't distinguish us in anyway from the norm.

Oh and Linda - personally, I think measuring and examining body parts and their correlation to testosterone  is a great way to spend my honeymoon. :)

1) Is your ring finger longer than your index finger?

Yes

2) Is your 2nd toe longer than your big toe?

Yes

3) Chronic or episodic?

episodic

1) yes.
2) same size.
3) episodic.

MarkC--Your statistical analysis is interesting but your sample is not large enough to make this statistically significant. 500-1500 samples, perhaps?
What is the correlation?

And why is Georgia soooo concerned about size now that she is on her honeymoon? LOL.  ;)

Mark.........

I understand when you stated that x is the ring finger and y the baby finger, you probably meant y was the index finger.

In that case, I'm looking at 2 columns of data, one labeled x, one y, and in the first row in each column 70 and 54.  Does this mean that in this hypothetical sample you had 70 positive replys to ring fingers larger and 54 negative replys?

After your detailed analysis, what is your conclusion?
