Title: *** EPISODICS ONLY *** Post by brain_cramps on Jun 21st, 2003, 5:18pm While MOST episodics CANNOT drink while in cycle, MOST chronics seem to say that alcohol has no effect. How many episodics feel that alcohol DOES have an effect while in cycle (ie. trigger)? |

Title: Re: EPISODICS ONLY... Post by Ueli on Jun 22nd, 2003, 7:54pm I was episodic for 5.5 years and I am now chronic for 4.5. For me alcohol was never a trigger (in fact, I learned about triggers only on CH.com). However, if I eat (the good Swiss) cheese together with any alcoholic beverage, I get a 3 hour whacker. Could be from a histamine shock, I've read that alcohol accelerates histamine uptake in the gut a 100 fold. PFNADs Ueli |

Title: Re: EPISODICS ONLY... Post by brain_cramps on Jun 23rd, 2003, 8:00pm As I had stated earlier, I had a reason for starting these two threads. While most newbies asking if alcohol is a trigger are episodic (as are most clusterheads, in general), it may be misleading for them to be answered by a chronic saying that alcohol isn’t a trigger without the chronic stating that they are, in fact, chronic. Additionally, it might be beneficial to determine if the newbie asking the question is episodic or chronic. As I stated in my original post, “While MOST episodics CANNOT drink while in cycle, MOST chronics seem to say that alcohol has no effect.” Note that all of these numbers are approximate, due to the fact that some answers were open to interpretation. Also, in a few cases there were people that were at one time episodic and now are chronic, or vice versa. The results from the EPISODICS weren’t surprising. 27 stated that alcohol was “Definitely a trigger”. 2 stated that alcohol was “In No Way a Trigger”. 4 found alcohol to be a “Conditional Trigger or N/A (ie. don’t drink)”. Meanwhile, I found the results from the CHRONICS to be surprising. I was (mistakenly) under the impression that most chronics could drink without getting hit. 7 stated that alcohol was “In No Way a Trigger”. 5 stated that alcohol was “Definitely a Trigger”. 8 found alcohol to be a “Conditional Trigger or N/A (ie. don’t drink)”. These are simply my observations as this is in no way a “scientific study”. |

Title: , one beerRe: *** EPISODICS ONLY *** Post by FrankF on Jun 23rd, 2003, 8:30pm One beer or hard liquor drink will usually trigger a CH attack within an hour if I am in cycle. When I am not in cycle, I can drink anybody under the table (even Jonny) and suffer no ill effects. |

Title: Re: *** EPISODICS ONLY *** Post by ijunG4 on Jun 24th, 2003, 4:44pm This was a great idea. Very interesting study. I bet no one in academia has thought to do this yet. BTW, I'm episodic and alcoholic beverages do trigger an attack. I can drink w/o problems only during off-cycle. It does seem interesting that there are a couple of people I ran across lately here who say vodka is the only thing that's OK. Looking at the way more chronics can tolerate alcohol, makes you wonder if there might be a compassionate God after all. More to the point, I think the difference in the effect of alcohol between episodic and chronic is a key to help unlock one of the mysteries in the mechanism of CH. I also think the theory postulated by JoeKen in "Red Red Wine" is considering--perhaps it's the impurities and/or additives in most drinks (common to most brewing/distilling), not the ethyl alcohol itself, that might be triggering CH. That would be the only reasonable explanation why some people can tolerate certain types of (but not all) wines and vodka, without fear of CH. This whole alcohol issue has got to be important, because unlike with migraine, alcohol seems to be the ONLY common external trigger to CH... |
