Title: *** CHRONICS ONLY ***
Post by brain_cramps on Jun 21st, 2003, 5:18pm
While MOST episodics CANNOT drink while in cycle, MOST chronics seem to say that alcohol has no effect.

How many chronics feel that alcohol has NO effect (ie. trigger)?

Six years chronic - No effect
In fact, no triggers at all

I'm chronic.

Alcohol doesn't trigger a CH, but it does give me a headache sometimes regardless of quantity.

WHY?

Grant,

average of 5 HA's per day for 11 yrs.

Have a  drink or 2......5 HA's per day.

No alcohol at all........5 HA's per day.

When I was episodic, I couldn't even have one glass of wine w/o  it triggering one.   Go figure, huh?

I was a chronic till this year. I think it is a trigger for me. I am not a drinker. I might drink one time a year, and when I do its not a lot. I usually do get hit soon afterwards. Its really hard for me to say cause I had clusters wheather I drink or not.

turned chronic nearly two and a half years now, and alcohol if a major trigger for me, so I stay away from it..unless my doc has handed me some free samples of zomig..then I'll pop one of those puppies and then I can enjoy a glass of wine.
I am having a major "chronic flare up" right now, so definatley NO ALCOHOL
If my chronic status is just "normal" and I am taking a high dose of verapamil, then I can enjoy a drink without getting hit...unless I drink too much.
Hope that helps

I've been chronic for 4 years, until I found verapimil.  I've been a chronic drinker for longer  :D does not trigger mine.

I have been a chronic for about 13 years. Drinking brings on my attacks everytime. Example=
I am going to get an attack at Midnight. It is 5:00 p.m.
I have about 3 beers and here we go.
I won't get my Midnight visitor. (Usually)
From that day on, I will recieve an attack around 6:00 p.m., then the rest will come at different times previous to my drinking episode. The times of my attacks will change whenever I stall an attack, or change the time frame somehow. If I let them run their course, I will be right on time for quite awhile.

P.S. After my first "drinking" attack, if I can make it, I will get completely shit-faced. Probably because I made it through and can continue to drink. Maybe some sorta weird victory party. Maybe because I can't come home after work and just have a few beers. :-/

I'm chronic and have been for about 10 years..

It is a trigger for me.

1. If I'm on meds (like prednasone) that is controlling my clusters temporarily - a drink will sometimes trigger oen anyway.

2. If my cycle is very regular and I am getting them at certain times - a drink will often give me a "bonus" cluster about 20-30 minutes after drinking.

I was episodic for 5.5 years and I am now chronic for 4.5.

For me alcohol was never a trigger (in fact, I learned about triggers only on CH.com).

However, if I eat (the good Swiss) cheese together with any alcoholic beverage, I get a 3 hour whacker. Could be from a histamine shock, I've read that alcohol accelerates histamine uptake in the gut a 100 fold.

It's funny. I was just talking to the beer in my hand about this. Oddly (and completely seriously) booze was a trigger for me while episodic (2 years) borderline chronic (15 years) and chronic (3 of the 5 years) until I did shrooms. When I did them one of the changes in my system was that booze almost never was a trigger again.

Alcohol triggers attacks every time for Mopar, even small quantities. Beer, wine and spirits all have the same effect.

Was episodic for 13 years and now have been chronic for 5.  Alcohol was always a trigger for me when I was episodic and I assumed it was for me when I was chronic too...I never really tested it out because I assumed it would be...

But I've had a few drinks over the past few months (since March) and not once has it triggered a headache for me!

As I had stated earlier, I had a reason for starting these two threads.

While most newbies asking if alcohol is a trigger are episodic (as are most clusterheads, in general), it may be misleading for them to be answered by a chronic saying that alcohol isn’t a trigger without the chronic stating that they are, in fact, chronic.

Additionally, it might be beneficial to determine if the newbie asking the question is episodic or chronic.

As I stated in my original post, “While MOST episodics CANNOT drink while in cycle, MOST chronics seem to say that alcohol has no effect.”

Note that all of these numbers are approximate, due to the fact that some answers were open to interpretation.  Also, in a few cases there were people that were at one time episodic and now are chronic, or vice versa.

The results from the EPISODICS weren’t surprising.  27 stated that alcohol was “Definitely a trigger”.  2 stated that alcohol was “In No Way a Trigger”.  4 found alcohol to be a “Conditional Trigger or N/A (ie. don’t drink)”.

Meanwhile, I found the results from the CHRONICS to be surprising.  I was (mistakenly) under the impression that most chronics could drink without getting hit.  7 stated that alcohol was “In No Way a Trigger”.  5 stated that alcohol was “Definitely a Trigger”.  8 found alcohol to be a “Conditional Trigger or N/A (ie. don’t drink)”.

These are simply my observations as this is in no way a “scientific study”.
