Title: It's always something.
Post by Locomotive_Skull on Jun 21st, 2003, 9:31am
Even though my C.H.'s have been fairly regular since I was a teenager, they still throw me a curve ball now and then.
When I have a few beers, I get one. That is an expected visit everytime. After my attack, I would continue to drink. After becoming, shall we say, "happy", I would be in the clear for the rest of the night.
Last night, me and the wife went to the tavern. I had a few beers after work waiting on her so I could get the attack over with before we went out. No attack. 3,4 more beers, no attack. "Hey, must have got lucky this time!" Yhea, O.K.
So I have downed about 8 or 9 beers and am feeling damn good. Me and the wife have had some problems, and rarely go out and have a good time. So here we go. At the tavern, I drink about 3 shots of Beam inbetween several more beers. Then, drunk, here it comes.
We were siting at the table and my wife asked if I had a headache. She asked if I wanted to go home and I said "no". I figured it was just a teaser and it would go away. I have never had an attack while being flat drunk before.
Anyhoot, 30 minutes later the mother in law can't get out of the house fast enough, my wife scurries to bed as quick as she can and I am doing my usual headache routine.
It's always something. Just when I think I can "controll" it, or make plans around it, it comes with a vengeance.
Oh well, at least we did have a good time up until that point. I think my wife is pretty disgusted with my C.H.'s. I will tell you this much, if the "Beast" ever takes a human form, It will recieve a royal ass-beating from me, and probably a few others as well.  ;)

Loco, are you crazy or what? Why would you taunt the beast like that? Do you like to be in pain? Must be some kind of self abuse or something...A little advice for you, DONT DRINK WHILE IN CYCLE  (unless you like the pain) I hope you figure it out      ................andy

Loco,
I spent a good part of last summer in the bars doing shots of Jack Daniels with my buddy, trying to figure out why my head hurt so much. I remember even taking some percocet with the drinks to try and mix it up and make my head feel better. All I was doing was calling the beast. This cycle...NO DRINKING!! I am craving like you would not believe, but trust us when we say STAY AWAY FROM DRINKING while in your cycle. Please. It's only 'cause we care about our Loco!
Darren

PS- sorry you went through that last night. that is never fun. hoping today is PF for you.

Yikes Loco!    :o

While I'm in cycle, I can't even watch a beer-commercial   ;), forget about sit and slam shots.

Since I first figured out alcohol is a trigger for me, I've (almost) never drank when in cycle.  Every time it brings one on immediately.

P.S.    Maybe its a good thing.   Mr.Liver needs a bit of rest too every now and then.   ;D

Whoa - it looks like alcohol is everybody's trigger in cycle.  My DH had a beer at dinner the other night and I swear just the smell made me start.

Of course, out of cycle I can drink till my hearts content (not that I drink much anyway but at least I can if I want).

Never, never, never, never, never drink in cycle unless you miss the beast so much you want a visit.

Andy,
My cycle has lasted for 13 years. There is no "taunting" the beast. It's coming no matter what I do. Drinking will only bring on earlier what's bound to happen later. If I know there is something I want to do later that evening, "pain free", I will drink a few until it comes, then I know I should not have one later. It throws my timing out of whack for a month or so, but I just adjust myself to the new times. I have been getting them around midnight, 3 a.m. and around 11:30 a.m., right before lunchtime at work. I got my suprise last night around midnight, then woke up around 6:00 this morning with one, have not had an afternoon one yet, so now it's up in the air as to what time frame they will be coming for awhile. My head has been "tingling" for hours, but no headache yet. It will probably wait until I am at Wal-Mart with my kid and a cart full of junk to attack. It seems to have no mercy.
:)

Nearly 28 years chronic and there is only one good thing I can say about it "I HAVE NO TRIGGERS".....................Yeeehaawwww!!!!!

(Dont need triggers, being chronic is a trigger)

Just a footnote to all this:

alcohol is a trigger for many BUT NOT FOR ALL!

It has never made any difference whether I drank or not.

The only difference I noted was when I went on  my monthly night out with friends and got merry. Then I would NOT get hit that night.

So Loco, apart from the fact that it IS a lot of beer, you are right that something is changeing for you. Clusters have a way of doing that.

Hang in there

Don, I think you are misunderstanding my comment. I am going to get a headache, every single night no matter what I do. As far as I know, my calendar for the next 13 years is also booked. I am not going to refrain doing what I want to do, because it will bring on a premature attack. Drinking only makes it happen when I want it to. I don't drink often, but when I do, at least it is somewhat on my terms, and I can time something later in the evening.

I can relate somewhat with jonnys comment,

Don't feel alone Loco, I will drink a couple of beers in cycle to bring on the beast before I go to bed.  That way I don't get one until around 6AM and can get a fairly good nights sleep.  I use the beer to manipulate the beasts timing.  Now this only works real well at the beginning of the cycle.  Once I hit peak...it doesn't work and I usually quit till it's just about gone.  Then I will use it to "check" to see if it's still lurking.

28 years! Holy shit. Have you ever had a break at any time? How old were you when they started?

P.S. Has anyone ever told you, that you look like Robert Blake in that "Working man" picture?

I'm sensitive to posts that involve excessive drinking. Especially when alcohol is a known trigger for CH.

Haven't had a drink in nearly 9 years.

Me and Jimmy Beam were good buddies! Prick never paid my bail though. LOL

I just know that all of Daves cycles were long until he realized that booze made the attacks worse and wouldnt allow for the meds to work... just Dave don't shoot me..............

For some people, I think this is a valid question/point.

Thanks for the idea.

If it helps just 1 person, is well worth posting.

*All of what I said is IMHO, of course.

Ree:

That's a GREAT point.   I'm amazed that, while MOST episodics CANNOT drink while in cycle, MOST chronics seem to say that alcohol has no effect.

This, to me, makes them seem like 'completely different animals'.

Since talking to a chronic for the first time, I have always wondered about this.

Any comments,
grant

Ree,

I've had a lot of people ask me that question.  For the first 4/5 months I had these, I never drank.  I just assumed that the alcohol would aggravate whatever was wrong with my head.  Then we went to New Orleans, and I drank.....didn't affect the head at all.  Well, let's just say I didn't get the "bad" headaches I was used to.....just a normal French Quarter 'hangover'.... ;)

So, I knew before I was diagnosed that alcohol wasn't a factor for me.  So far I've only found one trigger, and it's not booze.

I am chonic and I do not drink.  I have wanted to on plenty of occassions but I have refrained.  I get hit 8x /day anyways I doubt if I did drink it would have much of an effect on me.  Meaning I don't think I could get much worse.

Well.  I am NO doc.  Can only speak from decades of experience.

Relaxation and dilation of vessels causes my clusters.  I am episodic sufferer.  While in a cycle I cannot relax.  Could not medically explain this to anyone.  A long time ago, I realized that large amounts of caffeine (a vasoCONSTRICTOR), certain aspirins (excedrin - loaded with caffeine), seemed to offer some sort of relief, if there really is such a thing).  I also smoke.  A vasoconstrictor as well, nicotine...I eat minimally and never to the point of being full.......I also noticed from experience that alcohol (OF ANY SORT) brought on an attack.  Incidental?  Alcohol is a vasodiator.  Food consumption causes dialation as well.

What is the differential between episodics and chronics?  I don't know....think about it a lot!

I don't drink very often. I have gone several years without drinking before. Drinking is not that important of a subject to me really, except for the fact that it does bring on an attack prior to the regular time. Kinda like a date who shows up a couple hours to early so she can meet your parents. Wants  to sit around and talk to your Dad and shit while waiting for you to get ready. The only reason YOU put up with it, so you know you will have a nice time later on when there are no parents around! :D

Being new to this here site, and having just fingered out what I suffer from, my wife and I have related my evening drinkypoo to the beast. most times i cannot even finish the first pop, and i want to use the bottle on my skull! fortunately, i seem to be coming "out" of my cycle. can sympathize with the trouble thing tho, actually separated for a year till we found out what the pain was.....blamed her for years. be strong dude, stay positive, i broke into tears when i found u people, hope to get and provide support!

Like Jonny, I have never found a trigger. I haven't drunk a lot for 15 years or so but  back in the 70s and 80s, I put away my share of beer and all kinds of other stuff.

Booze never had an effect.
