Title: Haven't been round because not feeling & need help Post by Darleen on Jun 19th, 2003, 6:03pm Hey guys, I know I'm not one who posts a lot normally and I really haven't been doing much of anything lately. For the past 8 weeks or so I have broke out with hives. Last night and 2 weeks ago I had to go to emergency because it has now progressed to swelling of my face. As I'm typing right now I am pretty much broke out from head to toe. Doctors so far haven't been able to find anything and I have been asked all the regular questions like anything new that you have been using and I can't change anything because of John anyway. The next step is waiting for an appointment with the dermatologist and that's not till October. I'm really getting to the end of my rope and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or any experience with this. I know it's not cluster related but I really need you guys help. Thanks, D :) |

Title: Re: Haven't been round because not feeling & need Post by catlind on Jun 19th, 2003, 6:11pm Hi Darleen, Yes in fact I have had experience with this. After my first son was born I mysteriously broke out in hives. My feet would swell to 3 times their normal size. Anywhere on my body where there was any sort of pressure point, like where elastic in clothing was, or my feet, or where I would rest my arms on something, I would break out in hives. Dermatologist was no help to me at all, and all the meds I tried seemed to be useless. Aveeno baths helped, and I used alot of Aloe, not the gel, the stuff straight from the leaves of the plant. Also used ice alot. Claritin was about the only med that I found that actually helped. Benadryl gel helps too, but it is fairly new, so haven't had to deal with the hives much lately. Wish I could tell you more of what to do, but those were the only things that really helped me. Cat |

Title: Re: Haven't been round because not feeling & need Post by Darleen on Jun 19th, 2003, 6:14pm Thanks Cat, I have found that the Aveeno baths do help but I hate taking cold baths because the heat just aggravates the hives. I was atking the benadryl then I have switched to Reactine which isn't working too bad. Did your hives eventually just go away or do they still bother you. D :) |

Title: Re: Haven't been round because not feeling & need Post by catlind on Jun 19th, 2003, 6:19pm It took 5 years, but yes they went away. I do still get them once in awhile, but only when the heat and humidity is real bad. I always found that as soon as they started, if I caught them right away, I could at least control them, but if I left it even for a day, I would be covered in them. I hear ya about the colds baths. Take an old nylon and fill it with regular old quaker oats, and then soak that in cold water and use the bag to rub over the hives. It's slimey, but not as bad as having to get in a cold tub with aveeno. It does help, wish I could tell you more about how to deal with them. Lots of cold water soaks are best, and epsom salt baths too. Forgot about that one hehe. Hope you find out what is causing them :( Cat |

Title: Re: Haven't been round because not feeling & need Post by jonny on Jun 19th, 2003, 6:27pm Excuse me.....yes, me...can I ask a question? Can I catch it by hugging someone?....just asking ........................................jonny ;D |

Title: Re: Haven't been round because not feeling & need Post by catlind on Jun 19th, 2003, 6:29pm ROFL Jonny, yer terrible!!! No you can't catch hives by hugging someone. I don't think you can catch hives at all. It's a histamine thing - hmmm wonder if there's a link to CH in there somewhere... If it was poison ivy or oak or sumac you could catch it, but not plain ole hives :) Cat |

Title: Re: Haven't been round because not feeling & need Post by Opus on Jun 20th, 2003, 3:48pm Darleen, Could you allergic to heat, I have one sister who was allergic to cold and now a brother allergic to heat. Make sure you go to a good allergist, especially one who can make his own tests, because you may be allergic to some uncommon thing that standard tests would miss. Opus/Paul |

Title: Re: Haven't been round because not feeling & need Post by Tucker31 on Jun 21st, 2003, 8:24pm Hey yes I have had this happen. It was right before I had our daughter 7 1/2 years ago. Never figured out why, swelled all over, itched ozzed. It was horrible. I ended up seeing a really good allergeist. Gave me some new fanglled drug, expensive, but hey within days I was back to myself and haven't ever had the problem again! Also if you think it's contact reaction to something, even though you haven't changed anything try a over the counter body rinse, I think it's dombromo? I wouldn't wait until October, I would press to see a allergeist. But I'm not good at waiting for anything, esp. when I'm not in good shape. Best of luck to you! |
