Title: Hope I Didn't Mess Up
Post by stuey on Jun 13th, 2003, 8:44am
Morning. I have read and reread that Verapamil can prevent or tame CHs.  I take verapamil to control my blood pressure.  I take one 240 pill a day to control it.  Once I read that verapamil could help prevent the attacks I popped another pill.  That sure didn't work so I was thinking what's all the buzz about it don't work.  I have been in my cycle since late april and have 3 imitrex injections left.  So anyway yesterday morning i took 720 mgs of verapamil just to see what would happen.  Didn't have an attack all day but scared i might be woken up with one i took another half a pill for a total of 840 mg.  i didn't wake up at 2:00 a.m. with an attack but i called my sister (a physician assistant) this morning with the good news and she laid into me that I can't just fuck with my medication if it's what is controlling my blood pressure and that i could bottom my pressure out doing this.  it's not like taking one more vicodin.  you have to keep monitoring your blood pressure when you do what i did and it can be dangerous if verapamil is what you are using to control your pressure cause it can go too low.  i didn't know this and am feeling mad dizzy and light-headed this morning.  so maybe i messed up.  I don't know how many others here use verapamil to control their blood pressure but if you decide to up the dose to prevent C attacks make sure you have your b pressure monitored.  Hope this helps someone who might not have thought about this like stupid me did.  I guess I'll be okay but you can't pop pressure meds like you can pain killers.  So that's about it.  Peace.  Stuey :-[

Dude... :o    Verapamil is a good preventative, but it takes time begin to see any results. With meds, B.P. or Pain-killers, more is definitely not necessarily better.

Please don't ever up your meds without first talking with your Doc. Blood Pressure meds, Pain-killers, or any type of scripts. Talk to a neuro...

Good luck,

Jim

Jim I see you're correct.  As luck would have it another attack is coming.  I guess it does take a while.

Stuey... sounds like you were thinking of Verapamil as an immediate preventative.  An abortive, like 02 may stop your attack from escalating, as will other methods or meds (i.e. Imiitrex) which work for you in particular.

Verapamil needs to be built up in your system to be effective, IF indeed it does work for you. Effectiveness can vary by dosage.

Whatever you do be careful.  It bears repeating.  If you stay dizzy, get thee to the doc or ER asap.

Stuey,

Don't call yourself stupid - it's not true.  I hope you are able to increase the Verap and it helps.  You might ask your doc about purchasing blood pressure monitor for home.  They sell them at Wal-Mart, K-mart, etc.  Your insurance may cover the cost of one if you get a script.

Sorry to hear you're getting hit.  Sending many PF vibes to you.
Kate
