Title: Nice to know there are people to talk to
Post by ab15 on Jun 12th, 2003, 6:37pm
I just got diagnosed with cluster headaches a week ago, but I am two weeks into this cluster and this is my fourth cluster in two years. I always thought that I just got congested with really bad headaches for a few weeks every spring and fall, but now I know better. I dont know how I got through these before my imitrex injections; my last few headaches hurt as much as my apendix rupturing. The imitrex works great, and 40mg of predinisone a day seems to be preventing any more attacks. I hate the depakote though; its so hard on my gut!

I still cant believe the impact these headaches are having on my life! I'm only a junior in HS, and I get hit with something like this! I had to waive my finals this year and take my grades as they stand (hopefully good). On top of that, I was planning on going into ROTC in college. Now those plans are going no where. I have to reevaluate all of my plans. Well, at least I'm getting treated for the headaches now. Thnx for taking the time to listen.

AB, welcome  :D Sorry you have to be though  :(

You got to waive your finals?? Man! If I knew I could have done that, college would have been a lot easier!!!  ;D ;D ;D

In all seriousness though, welcome aboard. Hope you get PF soon!

Hi AB

Darren here. Diagnosed last week, now everything is different. What can you do? I find shooting flies helps. High School? Are you old enough to own a gun?

Welcome friend. :)

Hi AB-

Welcome to the board.  We're glad you found us but sorry it's because you are suffering with this crap.

You will learn a lot on this board.  Hopefully, you will discover the combo of meds that helps to keep your clusters under control.  Don't throw away those plans for ROTC yet!  There is a lot of hope out there!  Keep reading.

Thnx for the support all. Darren: funny you should mention shooting. I shoot competitive .22 cal rifle and air pistol. Great way to blow off stress, so to speak.

So to speak!

Honestly, I played paint-ball once. Oh, and I fired uncle Dave's Elephant gun in New Mexico. DAMN! Talk about blowing off stress. I blew a GDMF'n POF'nS out-building into dust from like real far away. One shot. MAN I could go for some of that right now!!!  >:(

Seriously, I have fired enough guns to know it is hard to hit a mark. If you're doing competition you must be pretty good. What can you hit at what distance?

DAM-it...I hate it when someone so young get these.

AB?   I'm so glad you got diagnosed so quickly, so now what you have to do is research this site and glean all the info here so you can deal with them.   Treat this as a term paper you have to study and research for.  There are meds out there that can help you deal.  Hoping you have a good Dr. who is willing to help you with that.

Come here anytime you want to vent, scream or just talk.  We're like a family here and you are our newest member.    LindaH

Welcome AB.

Don't change your plans.  (Re)evaluate as you go...like you said.  When your cycle is over, (soon I hope), things will be clearer.  Even between bouts within a cycle, endevor to be your good self.

Hi AB,

Glad yo found us, and even gladder that you were able to be diagnosed so soon.  Many of us were not so fortunate.  To be getting them at such a young age is a handicap, but it does not mean you have to forget all your plans for life.  You will learn to deal with them, and reaarrange your schedule around them, but it does not end life as you knew it.  Don't give up on the military if that is your dream.  Persue it with all you have and see what happens.  There are a lot of options with meds available to help you cope.  You didn't mention O2.  I would suggest you look into that.  Read all the information you can on the buttons on the left and keep in close contact with your Dr.  Hopefully you have a good Neuro.  Keep in touch here.  There are a lot of caring people here to help you over the rough times.

Welocme AB!

I hope you have more and more pain free times.  Don't let CH take over your life.  I was going down that road during this cycle.  People here have helped me gain a better perspective.   I'm glad you're diagnosed and getting treated.  I am surprised you're taking Depakote.  Have other preventative meds not helped?  I'm not criticizing it - just wondered if there was a med with less side effects that could help.

I hope you stick around.

Wishing you pain free days and nights,
Kate
