Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by catlind on May 26th, 2003, 6:51pm Prednisone has helped many folks here. It did in fact break a very long cycle that I was in. However, the side effects of it were not, in my opinion, worth the results. Not only do you gain weight, (depending on how long you are on it determines how much...I was on it for 8 weeks) it can cause diabetes mellitus (sp), avascular necrosis (destrys the bone matter in your hips and other joints), can actually stop your adrenal gland from producing the natural steroids all together so you would have to remain on it for life or face renal failure. These are by far the worst case scenarios, but even on the less lethal side, you can get very ill just from a simple cold, you may experience SEVERE mood swings, or take on complete personality changes, fatigue, dry mouth, etc. I recommend you research the medication fully and work with your doctor (or whoever prescribed) closely to decide if it is an appropriate course of treatment for you. Please keep in mind I am painting the worst picture of the drug to you, one that is more often associated with long term use (more than 2 weeks). Just be knowledgeable about the medication. Cat |

Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by paul_b on May 26th, 2003, 7:00pm Pred is not seen as a long term solution. Follow the Doc's advice and taper off. Imitrex and O2 have helped most of us get through our cycles. |

Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by don on May 26th, 2003, 8:09pm The pred. will not kill you. Geeeze! I suffer virtually no side affects at all. Taken correctly it will give you some relief and time to build up some energy to keep up the fight. You seeing a neuro? |

Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by oringkid on May 26th, 2003, 10:31pm I did the taper and had no noticable side effects. It kept me pain free until I finished. I think it just depends on the person and the length of time you are taking it. I can't remember but I think my taper was about 2 wks. Just keep a close eye on yourself and inform your doctor of side effects. Sherry |

Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by Charlie on May 27th, 2003, 1:22am One has to handle Prednisone carefully. Everyone here is right. Jonny just has a way with words, but he's trying to make sure you pay attention. Stuff can do wonders for a time though. Charlie |

Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by TerryS on May 27th, 2003, 2:02am Prednisone has helped me, but as soon as I was on the tapering off side my ch came right back. So it only helped me for a week or so and my Dr. would not let me stay on for a very lone period. See a Neuro and Good luck. TerryS |

Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by Woobie on May 27th, 2003, 7:56am Hi Gene... Dude, I'm sorry you're having a rough time!! I was on prednisone a LOT.. but not for clusters. I can tell you that it made me gain weight (as if i needed that!) and also made me PISSED OFF at everyone.. all the time. I felt so angry for NO reason, felt like I was gonna spload! BUT.. it does the job. I would rather be a cranky fat girl than be in pain.. but.. maybe that's just me. I hope the prednisone gives you the relief you need!! Tina :-* |

Title: Re: just back from 5 hours @ emergency ward Post by 9erfan on May 27th, 2003, 2:51pm Gene, Prednisone broke quite a few of my cycles over the years...but I refuse to go on it again because the side effects were awful for me. Actually, if you are on a taper I don't think a week is long enough. You need to be on for about 15 days...the headaches will just come right back if you are not on long enough. Unfortunately, I had some idiot Dr's that kept refilling my pred over and over and I wound up taking it for almost a year & a half straight....gained 60 pounds. Also, if you come off too fast...be careful! I almost passed out once from doing that... Do the research...some people won't have any side effects. Good luck, Virginia |
