Title: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by Phillygoat on May 22nd, 2003, 9:01pm So I just got back from the doctor today after I just walked in and said I could not wait three weeks like they had scheduled me for. So this doctor came in, I told him what was going on, and he looked me over. He said that it was a sinus problem because my throat was swollen and my ear was red on the same side. I told him it wasn’t sinus pressure because it hurt so badly. I told him I think it CH because of the pain and because they happen the same time each day and year. Then he told me CLUSTERHEADACHES ARE NOT CONSISTANT AND HAPPEN AT RANDOM TIMES OF THE DAY AND YEAR. Is this guy on something or am I? So he gave me antibiotics and nasal spray and said that a lot of people are getting this right now and although it may be these headaches to not think the worst. Then he left not giving me anything for my pain. What’s going on? No one seems to know what I really have and I’m still getting headaches. |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by don on May 22nd, 2003, 10:04pm Did you take the cluster quiz ? What was the result? Never mind. just reread your post. Quote:They could not tell me much but to take painkillers and that might be clusterheadachs. So I'm thinkin what the heck are clusterheadaches, but the doctor coulden't tell me anything about them. ( goes to show you how much they know. Trust me, for a doc to even suggest CH means they are lightyears ahead of when i first strated seeing Docs. You need to get to a good neuro. Not all neuros are up on CH. Some are willing to learn some already know. If the neuro you get to doesn't fall in either one of these categories, drop him and seek out another. The pain will not kill you in the interum. Use ice packs or heat. Try vigirous excercise. Unfortunately a newly diagnosed clusterhead needs to learn how to manage pain. It's unavoidable. Walk it off, try breathing in deeply in front of an air conditioner. Go to your nearest fire station and ask for O2. Go to the ER if neccesary, they are legally and ethically obligated to treat your pain. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That which doesn't kill us......will probably take another shot at it. Keep your eyes peeled. |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by Karla on May 22nd, 2003, 10:37pm The dr. you saw is crazy. My ch are consistent and occur at the same time of day every day for the last 5 years. You need to find a different dr. I agree with what Don said try some of his ideas they really do work! You can live with this pain. It is time for you to get creative and find ways to deal with it when you are peaking. It won't kill you just make you a little crazy. Good luck! |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by katethecelt on May 22nd, 2003, 10:38pm I just read your first post. I'm very sorry you are suffering. The great advice will help you cope and become informed. It's possible that you have a sinus infection along with the Cluster Headaches. That should not stop treatment your CH's. Welcome to the MB. Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by Callico_Kid on May 23rd, 2003, 12:11am Don is right! You have to experiment with different ways to deal with the pain until you can find an educated Dr. Print out any pertinent information from the buttons on the left and take them with you when you go see him (or her). In fairness to them, we are a rare breed, and most have not seen one of us, but that does not excuse their remaining ignorant. One thing that I use to help deal with mine is from the LaMaze method of childbirth. I find something to focus on and keep my mind occupied while doing something with my hands. Sometimes I can come on here, or if it is getting bad I try to play a computer game that requires concentration with activity. If I don't get on it early though it doesn't work. The main thing is to find what works for you. Focus on something OUTSIDE of yourself and the pain you are in. Hang in there and remember this: THIS WILL END!!! jc |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by BarbaraD on May 23rd, 2003, 4:17am If you've taken the CH quiz and have ascertained that you do have CH - FIND a NEW doc that has a clue! In the meantime - go to the archives and look up what works for some of us to help with the pain until you can see a real doc. I use Excedrin Extra Strength (or Excedrin Migrain -same ingredients) X 3 and a strong cup of black coffee. This works if I get to them quick enough. BUT if you do it too often - it can cause rebounds (damned if you do and damned if you don't). Anyhow it's worth a try for a quick fix. Exercise (banging your head, walking, sit-ups, etc). Go to the OUCH site and find a recommended doc in your area. These are docs who actually know what a CH is and how to treat it. I know it's disgusting, but we've all been there, so just hang in there till you find a doc who will work with you. But when you go to the next one go armed with literature. YOU have to do the research for them - they won't do it. Take it with you and "educate" the doc. Good luck and lots of hugs. BD |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by suzy617 on May 23rd, 2003, 4:38am I agree with the others. Take the quiz and make an appt. with a different neuro if you are not satisfied. Unfortunately many of us went years misdiagnosed and being treated for sinus problems also. Some of us have to educate our drs. Print out all the info you can from here that you think will help. I wish you luck, Suzy |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by Wendy1 on May 23rd, 2003, 6:26am GOSH!!! I HATE doctors who think they know what they are talking about when in reality, they don't know shit!! Why not just admit, that you don't know the signs and symptoms of C/H. "They happen all times of the day and all times of the year." Sounds like a very unsympathetic doc if he's grabbing at straws and not actually working with you. Just by what you say, I personally would find another doctor before wasting any more time with him. For him it could be a witchhunt and your his guinie pig. JMO..... Wendy |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by Bob_Johnson on May 23rd, 2003, 6:47am For many folks Clusters do not come on a highly regular pattern. It's really important to understand that any description of a medical condition is a kind of "ideal model". No description can account for all possible variations in symptoms, etc. One of the reasons that physicians may have a difficult time making an accurate diagnosis with a complex disorder is that the patient's symptoms don't fit into a neat, clear category. Much of medical diagnostic effort goes into ruling out other possible conditions. |

Title: Re: Am I wrong or the doctor Post by CLR on May 23rd, 2003, 9:36am Philly, Print out the info on clusters and give it too your parents, you really need them to understand what clusters are and go from there. I'm praying that you don't have clusters, but if thats the case you'll have lots of support. Sending positive vibes your way!!! Cindra |
