Title: Okay, nobody laugh...
Post by Jewel on May 16th, 2003, 11:24am
I haven't been here in three years and so that's why I'm asking this question.  Has anyone ever figured out what causes these headaches?

I believe the lack of replies to this topic would have to be the answer to your question....

uh, Jewel, in ANSWER to your question, we still really don't know for sure.

But if you were here three years ago, maybe you remember Dr. Goadsby's studies into finding the extra grey matter in the hypothalmus in clusterheads, thinking that may be A cause (or commonality at least).  Italy is doing some really good DNA research right now to determine genetic relation, as well as thermographic studies for accurate diagnosis. The UK continues to work hard on finding a cause.

Hope this answers your question?

I'm not real good at the scientific explanations but it's the gland deep in the centre of the brain that controls your body clock (circadian rhythm), sleep patterns, moods, temperature flux, etc.

Here's Doctor Goadsby's explanation:
http://www.clusterheadaches.org/library/hypothalamus/hypo_deform.htm

If you go to www.clusterheadaches.org then check out the menus above the map, the first one on the left contains the library.  I found this in the Hypothalmus section.  Lots of good reading over there.

I first saw this board a long time ago and now I'm also back.

You asked

Has anyone ever figured out what causes these headaches?

I seem to remember a guy named Kack or Crack or Jack or something like that posting a theory a few years ago. I'm not real sure of the date or title of the string but  'I've given it some more thought’ aka “A butterfly farts in Peru” theory"  on 9-30-99 comes to mind.

I don't believe in the butteryfly theory but Mexican circus midgets from China (you know.......motherland of the SARS) have been known to carry germs.

All kiddin' aside, to answer your question........Nope :'(

Welcome back Jewel.  Sorry you have to be here.
CH is still largely a medical mystery.

EyesAfire Law of Functionality:  For each function there are numerous possible malfunctions... er... something like that.

Pain sux.

Hopefully you get relief very soon.

Hi Jewel,

There is research being done on things that can trigger CH attacks & episodes.  I've started keeping a daily journal of I've done, eaten, how I slept, what meds I took & how often, along with times and pain levels of CH's.  I hope to find a trgger, but there not be any one in particular.

I'm also writing down what info, links, meds and so on that I've found info about here.  I can't rely on my memory - especially during an episode.

Wishing you PFDAN's,
Kate
