May 13, 2003 — A total eclipse of the moon will take place Thursday evening in the first eclipse of 2003.
If skies are clear, the eclipse will be clearly visible from North and South America, as well as Europe, Africa and Antarctica, according to NASA.

During a total moon eclipse, the disk around the moon can turn bright orange to blood red to dark brown and, sometimes, very dark gray.

The entire eclipse from start to finish will be visible from the eastern part of the United States; for the western half, partial phases begin before the moon rises, so the westernmost states will see a fully eclipsed moon rise.
Seen from Germany, Switzerland and Italy, the moon sets during the total phase of the eclipse. England, Ireland and France will catch all of totality since the moon sets during the final partial phases. Finally, western Spain and Portugal will see the entire eclipse, which ends shortly before the moon sets, NASA said.

May's lunar eclipse will last about three hours and fifteen minutes. The partial eclipse begins as the moon's eastern edge slowly moves into the Earth's shadow. It takes just over an hour for the moon's orbit to carry it entirely within the shadow.

And since no major volcanic eruptions have taken place recently, the moon will probably take on a vivid red or orange color during the total phase. After the total phase of the eclipse ends, it is once again followed by a partial eclipse as the Moon gradually leaves the umbral shadow.

According to NASA, there are anywhere from 0 to 3 lunar eclipses, either partial or total, each year. The last time three total lunar eclipses took place in one calendar year was in 1982. Partial eclipses slightly outnumber total eclipses by 7 to 6.

Unlike a solar eclipse, you can look at these. They are cool. Watching a full white moon, turn blood red, just after the earth's shadow engulfs it completely.

I googled up some great pictures of total lunar eclipse’s.

Do yourself a favor and catch this one, these pictures are accurate.

The last one captures the weird “3-D” effect that takes place,
like the moon is badly superimposed on a cheap, Hollywood backdrop. Do shrooms.

The only total lunar eclipse that I have ever seen was at just under 10,000 ft. elevation, camping above Lake Tahoe,
back in the early ‘80s. It was GLORIOUS!

I highly recommend, taking the time to see this.
Believe me, it’s not like waiting for a shooting star during a meteor shower. This is in your face.

Awesome pictures, will look out for the eclipse tonight...I saw the total eclipse a few years ago on 11th of August, that was during the day, it was eeriee having you world go dark during the day....something I won't forget..

Thhis is what it looked like when I could see it except the lighter portion was at the top.

With your notification, I just got to see about 1/2 hour of it. It is now fastly clouding up (10:35pm CST).
The ability to see it is now blocked by the clouds.

At least I got to see some of it.

I saw a little bit. The botton right portion was blocked from where I could see in Simi Valley, CA. Too much damn light pollution around here. ???

David--thanks for reminding me. Unfortunately, It was too cloudy in MD last night. I did have my telescope out the night previously and the moon was spectacular. Not like an eclipse, but none the less very detailed. Thanks again.
