Title: Smokers??
Post by Mack on May 9th, 2003, 5:25pm
While I'm goin thru this sh!t, here's a question/poll.

How many ch'ers here are/were smokers?

I've seen some info saying most ch'ers smoke and or drink and just wanted to know. I'm planning on quitting(again)  here in a couple of weeks and wanted to find out other peoples experiences.

Thanx,

Mack

I have never smoked but then I don’t remember much any more.  I believe my memory is gone from all of the drinking.  At least I think I drink a lot, but I don’t remember much that happen longer than an hour ago.  I’m going to try some tequila to see if the taste is familiar.

Take care stevek

Smoke 30 cigs day
Drink carton of beer plus 5 bottles wine a week.

I agree.
Seems like there is a connection between alcohol abuse in teenage years and CH.

Smoke 2 to 3 packs a day
Drink 2 to 3 drinks or beers a day (but not every day)

BUT

I got CH when I was only 11 or 12...did not smoke or drink then.  So the correlation seems to be that CH either causes an addictive personality or people with addictive personalities seem to get CH but Smoking and Drinking do not cause CH.

That's my story and I'm stickin to it!

Mack,

2 Packs a day.

Quit for 1 year, still clustered.

Started smoking 2 packs a day again and still clustering, if the clusters don't kill me the cancer probably will:)

Been sober 14 years. I had the Irish social disease.

Aw Man,
I just knew this was coming! Yes, I friggin smoke and I love to smoke. I'd friggin smoke it my sleep if I could! Well, okay jsut a tad on the drama but I've been wondering if smoking had something to do with these bastards. Vasoconstriction and all. Alcohol- a glass or 3 of champange on N.Y.E. is all.
Er, how to ask this one? Please, don't anybody lose their minds and feel the need to get all  preachy.
My ch's came on a year or so after I'd first tried extacy pills. I was doing 1-3 pills a month for about 6 months then and rarely have one these days. I have however, noticed that after a night out taking extacy a ch is always waiting in the wings for me when I arrive home.
These things just don't like anyone to have a goodtime! Anyone else have the same or similar?

20 cigs a day, don't drink as much as I would like to but a little more than I should. After nearly 20 years of episodic CH's, whether I do or don't smoke doesn't make an ounce of difference.

Ecstasy causes Serotonin depletion, which could be why you get an attack after doing Ex. I doubt it's what caused you to start getting them in the first place though, especially since it was a year or two after (and if the depletion was the cause a lot more people would have clusters).
As for the initial question? I neither smoke nor drink... unless I'm awake.

Nearly two packs a day for 30 years.

Several drinks a day for 30 years.  Spent 5 years shitfaced, and tend to get somewhat faced at least 2 nights a week.  Life is such a wonderful fucking ride!

Neurologist quoted that 85% of cluster headache suffers are smokers but quitting doesn't seem to help usually. If there is a connection I guess damage is already done. Also I I never could drink alchohol until I started taking lithium daily, now I at least have a somewhat social life.

6 pack of beer a night and a few reds to follow up...smoke rollies so not sure how many a week but i got one in my mouth and one burning in the ashtray ;D
As we all know if your in a cycle alcohol is out...smoking doesn't make a shit of difference either way.
Blessed be PFDAN

1.5 packs a day - Camel Menthol Lights

30 Mich Lights / wk.

10 Crown & Cokes / wk....

out of cycle drinking only... I've noticed that the harder that alcohol consumed during cycle, the longer and more frequent, and more painful the attack is during that particular night.... I downed a fith of Jim Beam and thought I was gunna have to kill myself that night...

I drink and I smoke.  Here are some of my favs:

1.  Icehouse Beer
2.  Chocolate martinis
3.  Regular martinis with a *whisper* of vermouth.  Two Olives, preferably dirty.
4.  Absinthe.

When I am not in the midst of a cycle, bien sur.  Otherwise, tally ho!!!!

I am a smoker, and have subsequently given this matter a good deal of thought. I want to preface my remarks by saying that I love to smoke. I really enjoy smoking cigarettes. I do not want to believe that smoking affects CH, but I am beginning to think that it does, based on the following:

1. When I am in cycle, the more I smoke, the more "headachey" I feel.

2. Too many times to ignore, I have felt one come on right after having a smoke.

Now for a crackpot theory based on what I think I know.

1. There is some mechanism causing abnormal dilation of blood vessels, resulting in attacks of acute, debilitating pain - CH.

2. Blood vessels in the body dilate and constrict to some
degree all the time as a normal function of human biology.

3. There is some mechanism (gene - gene function?) "telling" blood vessels to dilate, and a mechanism "telling" them to contract.

4. This mechanism may function like a limit switch, in that, dilation mode is turned on, the blood vessel dilates and once it reaches a certain degree of dilation, a limit switch-like mechanism shuts off dilation. The limit switch-like mechanism is set to shut off dilation at a value that is less than the amount which starts to cause pain. If this is how it works, then there are 2 (or more) possible malfunctions.
4a. With CH, the shut off point is altered so that the blood vessels are "instructed" to dilate furthur than the point which begins to cause pain.
4b. The limit switch-like mechanism fails, and blood vessels are allowed to dilate beyond the point at which dilation is normally shut off. Some time later, either the mechanism starts functioning again, or some other mechanism shuts off dilation.

Based on the above, if smoking triggers blood vessel constriction, than, at some point, dilation must be activated. This triggers the process which results, ultimately, in CH.

Think of it like a furnace whose thermostat is set at 70 degrees. The thermostat reads the air temperature, and when it gets below 70 degrees, the furnace is activated and starts to blow heated air through the ducts and into the rooms. Once the air in the area surrounding the thermostat reaches 70 degrees, the thermostat "tells" the furnace to shut off.
If the temperature in the room is more than 70 degrees and the furnace is still running, then 2 (or more)
of the following occured.
1. Somebody set the thermostat to more than 70.
2. The limit-switch mechanism which tells the furnace to shut off when the temperature is 70 or more degrees has failed and is not working.
-Curtis
