Title: Why is everyone sooo F*!&ing Clueless? Post by athos12 on May 8th, 2003, 1:17am Doctors don't know shit about headaches! And they think I am the one who does not know anything. I had to point out to my Nero my specific symptoms and tell him that I had Clusters. After I made him take the time to listen to me, he finally agreed. I am ready to shot any doctor that I see walking down the street! I have dozens of Doc's and several Neuro's (the one I have now is the best so far). But, I never get the same answer twice. From any doctor. Maybe it is a Utah thing, I don't know, but I am tired and I am pissed at the lack of understanding and competence. I had one doc tell me that I was lying and the pain was not that bad... I want to kick him in the teeth and tell him that did not hurt. I did have my lawyer write him a letter telling him not to call people liars... That was fun. Anyone had sucess in Utah with a good doc? --Athos |

Title: Re: Why is everyone sooo F*!&ing Clueless? Post by Bob_Johnson on May 8th, 2003, 9:03am This from an old message of mine; go to the archive to find the last message cited. Also go to OUCH for list of docs. "PHYSICIANS--LOCATING HEADACHE SPECIALISTS The National Headache Foundation, 1/888-643-5552, will send a list of doctors, by state, who have self-identified themselves as being interested and experienced in treating headache. I suggest using this source for several reasons: first, we have read several messages from people who, even seeing neurologists, are unhappy with the quality of care and ATTITUDES they have encountered; second, the clinical director of the Jefferson (Philadelphia) Headache Clinic said, in late 1999, that upwards of 40%+ of U.S. doctors have poor training in treating headache and/or hold attitudes about headache ("hysterical female disorder") which block them from sympathetic and effective work with the patient; third, it's necessary to find a doctor who has experience, skill, and a set of attitudes which give hope of success. This is the best method I know of to find such a physician. www.HEADACHECARE.COM. See physician finder; limited listings. WWW.ACHENET.ORG American Council for Headache Education. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSENSITIVE DOCTORS--dealing with Some personal thoughts posted on 1/18/00." ======== As difficult it is to hold in mind when in pain, self-interest demands that you accept the statement in the first para--large numbers of docs have poor training in treating headache. I'd add that many don't have the personality to work with difficult and time consuming medical problems. It's critical that you ask a new doc (pick his office staff also) about their experience and approach to treating CH. IF you hear of treatments which are quite different from those you read about here, be suspicious that this doc is not up to speed. But this is true for finding any new doc for any purpose: they are not gods; they are bright--and limited--humans. We must be prepared to negiotiate for treatments we think are needed--but attacking will get you neglect. One of the best reasons for printing out the medical info you find here is so that you can take it in with you--to have an authoritative talking point as you deal with the doc. (I've had really good success with three local docs with this approach. It's hard for them to blow you off when you come in with medical literature from their world of experience.) |

Title: Re: Why is everyone sooo F*!&ing Clueless? Post by Elaine on May 8th, 2003, 11:07am Great post Bob! Athos don't fool with a primary Doctor, go to a nero. A nero knows about clusters if he is a good one. Remember just because you see all the people on here that have clusters doesn't mean your doctor has treated that many with clusters. My doctor has only treated a handful. Clusters are Rare!!! You also need MRI's done at least every two years. Just to rule out other things. Never know! Thats another reason O.U.C.H. is so important! They are clueless cause we don't fight hard enough to make our condition known. That is what O.U.C.H. is all about! I hope you get help soon and find the right Doctor! |

Title: Re: Why is everyone sooo F*!&ing Clueless? Post by oringkid on May 8th, 2003, 1:50pm I agree with all of the above. Also keep in mind how basically clueless we (in the general sense, as human beings) are about the human brain in general. We don't really know much about how it works. Very few headaches have an obvious cause. If doctors don't see a tumor or lesion or obvious defect, they must then try to catagorize the headache by sets of common symptoms which, due to these commonalities have been given a name. Migraine may be better known, but they still do not know what causes them. Clusters, due to their rarity, are basically just a set of symptoms that are not as well known. Our medical knowledge has come a long way since the beginning of time, but we still have a very long way to go. We've gotten better at treating symptoms but in many cases we still don't understand the workings of the human body or the causes when something goes wrong. Perhaps 100 or 200 years from now, the doctors and medicine practiced today will seem like the days of leeches and bleedings seem to us now. Anyway... just something to chew on. Sherry |
