Title: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by 9erfan on Apr 28th, 2003, 12:22pm Ok, I admit it! I'm feeling sorry for myself. I think I've jinxed myself or something. Over the last few weeks I've been posting about how even though I am chronic, I haven't had a 10 in a few months and I felt it was because of the water therapy. Well, last week they came back. You would think after 18 years of this BS, I would just learn to roll with the punches (I wish I could be as strong as you Jonny) but that's just not always the case. Over the past few months the worst I've had has been around a 7 but mostly 5's. Then out of the blue (isn't that always the way?) the 10's started hitting last Wednesday. And still after 18 years I find myself questioning everything I had been doing ...."what did I eat different that day?", "did I drink something different?"..."was it because i've been eating too much chocolate latey??" . I know there's no answers to these questions, yet I still find myself asking them. FRUSTRATING! So I have a couple of questions about meds. I do not have insurance so I have not been to the DR in almost 2 years and have no prescription meds. Only been taking Motrin & Aleve in massive quantities every day for a couple of years (I'm sure I have no liver left). So I'm having lunch with a friend of mine today who takes maxalt for her migraines and she said she'll give me some pills. Is this a preventative or an abortive? Should I try one as soon as she gives it to me or wait till I get hit? I also have an opportunity to get some Immitrex nasal sprays from a fellow clusterhead....should I or should I not take this in conjunction with the maxalt? Sorry for the long-winded message...Keep me in your prayers. I feel a lot of pressure not to miss any work because I don't get paid for it because I'm working as a temp.. but the lack of sleep alone is just making me a walking zombie. :'( Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me on the meds. OH-SO-TIRED-VIRGINIA... :( |

Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by MKenney on Apr 28th, 2003, 12:52pm I would like to talk to you, but I know nothing about the medications in question, much less their interaction. As another eighteen year veteran, my episodes are semi-controlled using Eskalith and Calan. But, I empathize about the 10s. I get them at night as well. I would have written sooner, but I just woke up from a nap here at work. Miklos |

You dont have to be, you only need to be as strong as YOU need to be. I wouldn't fuck with the maxalt without a doctors supervision. Read down to the "wiggin out" post. So that eliminates the worry of combining the two drugs. I will advocate for not using a drug but will not advocate for using one without a docs supervision. Any one on this board that takes that step better have a big fat ass diploma on their wall that says they can prescribe. If they dont, they shouldn't. The imitrex is your decision. |

Post by 9erfan on Apr 28th, 2003, 2:42pm [quote author=don How would he know that if he hasn't been to a doctor in 2 years?[/quote] Hi Don- FYI, 9erfan is a girl... :o I've tried Verapamil back in the early years and it didn't do anything for me...as far as Prednisone goes...NO WAY! I hate that stuff. The side effects from the Pred were a nightmare for me and I refuse to go on it again. OK, you guys have got me thinking twice about trying the Maxalt. I did try the Immitrex nasal spray a few months with mixed results...worked for me a couple of times, didn't work another couple of times. Thanks for the suggestions. Virginia PS: CJohnson- you may be seeing my username changed this year to Lionsfan...Can't stand the thought of the Niners without Mooch....love Mooch! I hope he does well in Detroit. |

Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by Roxy on Apr 28th, 2003, 6:06pm Virginia, I'm so sorry the 10's are back. I really hate to hear that. Can you get 02 some way? I would use that instead of the meds, unless you get a Dr's check-up first. The welding 02 isn't that expensive, and it does work. Try dramamine at night. It should at least give you a night or two of rest. Thinking of you, Tracey |
||||
Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by 9erfan on Apr 28th, 2003, 6:42pm Thanks for the good thoughts you guys! I can just go to a welding shop and ask for O2? I think I may still have a mask from a long time ago...I may not though..not sure.. I'll pick up some dramamine on my way home. Thanks Tracey. |

Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by Roxy on Apr 28th, 2003, 6:45pm Virginia.....I forgot..... ::) When I take the dramamine, I always take 2. Just 1 tablet doesn't seem to keep mine at bay. You might try it first with just one, then maybe you won't feel so groggy in the morning. Good luck :) |

Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by Sean_C on Apr 28th, 2003, 6:57pm Hi Virginia, Sorry to hear about the tens, and as for the trex, its big $$$$$$$, and most insurance company's only let you get 2 boxes of spray I believe. I think if you do the 02 and get through this cycle with that, and a preventative that helps, maybe at least they'll die down a bit. SEAN |

Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by Charlie on Apr 29th, 2003, 5:59am I really hate what this does to people. I know zero about meds so all I can do is post my thing. Like I told Don, it's useless if you give up. If you keep at it all during the attack, one of these times, it will clobber the thing. Then, you'll know what I mean. At least the price is right and good luck. Dr. Wright's Circulatory Technique This is not transcendental meditation, imagery, relaxation, or anything psychic. It's entirely physical and takes a lot of work and concentration. Give this method a good workout. It’s not a miracle, but it’s been helpful to many. When I was diagnosed, my neurologist said to treat this as a vascular problem. I was told to concentrate on “redirecting” blood circulation in order to retard flow to the head. This is done by trying to “send” blood into the arms and hands or other extremities. When properly done, your hands will become warm and redder with increased circulation. I also found it easier to concentrate on one hand. This relieves just slightly, the pressure on the affected vessel, which indirectly causes our pain. We all have this ability but it can be exhausting. I was often able shorten my attacks from about half an hour to no more than a few minutes. Sometimes, when awake, I could entirely abort the attack IF I KEPT AT IT. Often, I would suffer only minor discomfort instead of excruciating pain. Do not stop just because your hands are warm or redder. Keep this up until you are sure it's subsided. If you let up or lose concentration, it’s very hard to restart this process. It may take some time but when this works, the relief is almost immediate. I learned this from the doctor in a few minutes. He simply told me to try to keep blood away from the head. He thought it easiest to concentrate on the arms and hands but any place that works for you is fine. He said to think of it as "filling your hands" with redirected blood. It’s important to keep at it THROUGH the pain. This will be difficult, but it’s the only way this technique will work. Don’t let up until you are sure the attack has ended. This will not always work, but I think it will always have at least some effect on the severity and duration of the attacks. It can be useful between medications or while waiting for some other drug to take effect. All it takes is a little practice. It was fairly easy to learn and what I'm writing here is more than I got from the doctor, as I've drawn from my own experience. When awakened in horrible pain, it’s very hard to focus, but I think it’s always worth a try. This costs nothing but hard work, is harmless, non-invasive, and it gives us a fighting chance. I wish you the best of luck - Charlie Strand |

Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by Mark C on Apr 29th, 2003, 8:12am Hi Virginia, I am sorry about the head. I know how you feel. :-[ I would have to agree with Don on the about the meds. Maxalt (http://www.maxalt.com/rizatriptan_benzoate/maxalt/consumer/product_information/ppi/index.jsp) and Imitrex (http://www.gsk.com/products/imitrex_us.htm) are both triptans and one should exercise care in thier use. Heart problems are a serious consideraton. That being said both work well for me. O2 always sounds like a good selection. I wish you well. http://www.drfeller.com/Mark/muleman.gif |

Title: Re: The 10's are back!! UGH! Post by 9erfan on Apr 29th, 2003, 5:21pm Thanks for all the replies to my posting. This is the first time I've logged in today because I stayed home with the damn beast attacking me. I tried the dramamine last night and unfortunately I woke up at 1:45 clutching my head and crying my eyes out. Then when I tried to get ready for work at 5:30 they started hitting again and just knocked all the energy out of me. I've seen people on the board say that they've never missed work because of a cluster and I just don't know how you do it. I can't even think straight let alone drive the 1 hour drive to work. Unfortunately, a visit to the Dr is not an option for me financially right now. I have no insurance and I owe about $1300 in med bills from ER visits from last year. The last neurologist I saw tried to wean me off of the ibuprofen and put me on Neurontin (I think that was it) but the pharmacy wanted $400 for the dosage that he was trying to give me. Needless to say, that didn't happen. I'm going to get an ice pack now....thanks for caring... Virginia |
