Post by Not4Hire on Apr 14th, 2003, 10:34am
...hey clusterfolk....here's a link to the latest (easy-to-read) version of the proposed Oxygen button... I invite your commentary on how to make it better.....

http://www.maplefallswebdesign.com/misc/oxygen/oxygen.htm

Many thanks go out to all who contributed, especially MICH (Mastifflvr28) who was invaluable in making it happen and putting it on her site.....(abrazos!)

I'll be taking down the site where I placed the info originally, so update yer Bookmarks/Favorites if ya saved it....

Quite a compendium (http://www.maplefallswebdesign.com/misc/oxygen/oxygen.htm )......can see a lot of time, energy, and spell checking went into this. If there's anything you missed, it can't be very important.  4....you are to oxygen, what Picasso is to canvas, what cream cheese is to bagels, what Virgins are to Mary...........

Best if read on a full stomach. Thus shall the

Just one thingie, the beginning of page 2 looks a bit confusing; could prolly do with some graphical asjustment...

But will work well without it.

Great job, again!

AVE...help me out here...where do you think the "medically necessary" form should go.  I wanted it somewhere Easily accessable...but your right...shouldn't be at the top of page 2.

Anybody got suggestions??  I can change it anyway anyone wants.  Suggestions very welcome.

Title: ode to O2 2
Post by rumplestiltskin on Apr 14th, 2003, 11:32pm
Yea verily I shakest my head as I read the following line repeated over and over again in O2 advise and once again in yers.

Quote:
A regulator that will deliver up to 15 liters per minute (10-12LPM is usually enough, less will not be as effective).

For YEARS now my regulator maxed at 8 lpm has killed countless CHs. It delivers all the O2 as fast as I can breathe it.

Some of you people really suck.

Den,

I agree with what you say.  The flow probably doesn't matter as much as one's ability to inhale the O2.  I personally can empty a 15lpm flow ... but years as a life guard and growing up on a waterway that required one to be underwater for great lengths of time (or be caught by whoever was 'it') has probably given me a great lung capacity.  (no comments from the peanut gallery :P)  So, I can empty the bag at 15lpm and have to wait for it to refill.

I think the AVERAGE for folks is between the 8-12lpm range.  Even Slammy will attest to having a greater flow rate.  Glad you can get by on 7 though :)

Great job! I was talking to a fireman & he asked me to bring something printed out so that he can distribute it to the other firehalls in town. This way, any sufferer doesnt even need to explain, all the info is there!
I used the info from the link & printed it & took it rght over..and guess what?? It was put on the "911 info board" which is what the firemen & first responders use to keep updated on latest med info..yayy!! Congrats on a job well done:)

Hey gang!

This is truly an O2 Info Bible.  I only tried O2 once, at the ER, but it was unsuccesful 'cause they would not go over 6.5 l/min.  But I still had faith and the end of this cycle, I finally found a neuro who would prescribe it to me.

So now I have the prescription, I know where to get it and, most important, I will know how to use it.

Thanks to you, I am ALMOST looking frorward to my next cycle...

You guys rock!!!

Okay you 02 guys....I just spent 1 1/2 hrs. in the medical supply store, trying to get medical 02 (or at least the regulator).  These are some of the facts the owner of the store stated to me.  Thought ya'll might like to hear them.

1.  Liquid 02 is cheaper in the long run, because you don't have to fill it as often.

2.  You can't use a bubbler if you are breathing at over 7lpm, because you will blow it up. (not the 02, but the bubbler)

3.  You need to change your tubing and mask every 3 days. This had to do with getting an "infection" from the dirt.  (I told him my dog played with mine....just to see the look on his face)

4.  No one can breathe in more air than that which is put out by a 7lpm regulator.....it is a human impossiblity.

5.  There is no need for a non-rebreather mask.  You get plenty of 02 with a regular mask.  (On this he changed his tune after he spoke with my Dr., and yes, he was very surprised)

6.  Tried to tell me I needed the big 02 converter for my house.  I told him I didn't think so.  This point, I'm sure is thrown in to people who don't know better, I'm sure it's a profit maker for them.

It was a very interesting visit, because this is what people new to 02 therapy will encounter.  If I hadn't learned all I have from this board, I would have assumed he knew what he was talking about.  He is a respiratory therapist.

This is where ya'lls new 02 page will help so many people.  Educating them on what they need, not what someone who is clueless will tell them.  Although, he did tell me that they get their 02 from the welding store.

Tracey

BTW:  Those E tanks are terribly small aren't they?

...great post, tracey(rox)!...in order of MIS-information:

Quote:
1.  Liquid 02 is cheaper in the long run, because you don't have to fill it as often.

...probably true, bulk rates for most commodities are cheaper... hospitals/ER's use lots of o2 (and charge like Teddy Roosevelt.....)

Quote:
2.  You can't use a bubbler if you are breathing at over 7lpm, because you will blow it up. (not the 02, but the bubbler)

...never had it happen to ME, but they told me the same thing when I got mine.... I think it's a CYA deal...

Quote:
3.  You need to change your tubing and mask every 3 days. This had to do with getting an "infection" from the dirt.  (I told him my dog played with mine....just to see the look on his face)

...LMMO (Laughin' My Mask Off) ...obviously, these guys are PROFIT DRIVEN... they LOVE to sell ya stuff... you should inspect yer RIG and keep it clean... but just soak a cotton swab in denatured alcohol and wipe out the mask.... don't share it with the other CHers in yer house-OR the dog.... and you'll be OK.... probably a good idea to get a new mask, bubbler, and tubing every so often.....

Quote:
4.  No one can breathe in more air than that which is put out by a 7lpm regulator.....it is a human impossiblity.

...then why do they even HAVE regulators that go up to 15 LPM (or more)?... personally, when *I* am huffin', and the bag doesn't fill, I feel like I'm gonna suffocate.... YMMV (sorry, den!)

Quote:
5.  There is no need for a non-rebreather mask.  You get plenty of 02 with a regular mask.  (On this he changed his tune after he spoke with my Dr., and yes, he was very surprised)

...ignorance IS curable... stupidity (like UGLY) is to the BONE.....

...you got it: *profit maker*... and the converters only deliver about 95% oxygen... good enough as a supplement for people with low blood oxygen (COPD, emphysema, heart/lung problems. etc.) but WE CHeads need as close to 100% o2 as we can get... that's WHY the NON-Rebreather mask.....

....Many thanks for the post... it should go onto the *Nuggets* part of the page.....

...did ya ask the *respiratory therapist* how many clusterheads he had experience with?

Interesting, I dunno if mine even has one of them pressure thingies on it but the healthcare company had no problem giving it to me with the 15lpm regulator and it's never blown up :)

Very interesting.  Can't say I've ever gotten an infection from the same mask.  Even after my 2 year old plays with it (can you say GERMS).  I'm sure changing the water in your bubbler is a good idea (I think it turned a little slimey in my bubbler after a month hehe)

Quote:
4.  No one can breathe in more air than that which is put out by a 7lpm regulator.....it is a human impossiblity.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!  Once again I've done the impossible!!!! ;)  I can breathe in the 15lpms with no trouble.  And I wait for the bag to refill.  Guess that's what you get for underwater training as a lifeguard.

5.  There is no need for a non-rebreather mask.  You get plenty of 02 with a regular mask.  (On this he changed his tune after he spoke with my Dr., and yes, he was very surprised)

Shit, this guy could be downright dangerous to someone who needs to know how O2 operates.  NO ambient air for Chead.

Don't know what one of them is :)

Certainly sounds like someone who's money hungry and doesn't know squat about the entire customer base of his business.  I'm sure if you have emphysema you might not breathe more than 7 lpm, but no one?  Humanly impossible?   ::)  Jonny, this guy needs a visit ;) LOL

Fortunate for us we've got gurus and a great info page :)

Great job guys! I just read through the page in detail and laughed and laughed at drummer's Cluster Safety Kit. (Maybe it should be duplicated on the Safety With O2 page - with a highlight for guys to read  ;D )

In my first post here, I was feeling lousy from a long battle with the beast and Mr. Happy said the following:

Stop thinking. hey, it ain't easy spelling the way Cootie does.  I think it takes great talent, actually ;)  Cootie-ish is a language all unto itself.

I gotta say that Cootie really handled herself well through all the turmoil today/yesterday.  I think she should win the 'Tude of the Week.  What could have easily turned into a slug-fest, she deftly turned into smiles even though it was a little close to the edge at times.  I don't think I've EVER seen anyone here try so hard to change the subject - distraction by showing folks a picture of a dragon before.  Way to go Pam!  You've definately got the right mindset to be a cluster supporter, gal!

Just thought it might be easier till the button is available?

I SO wish I could, Sherry, but I can only do that kind of stuff over at the supporters' corner.  I hear rumours that DJ's 'puter is pooched, but I'm sure that he'll make this a button as soon as he's able.

If I could, though - I'd also change the name of the thread now....to THE BEST THREAD EVER!! Way to go Steve et al!!  Sure wish this stuff was around when we started clusterin' in our house!  AWESOME job gang!

p.s. Steve - you're only 5 hours south of me....

Thanks, I kinda figured...

But hey, Steve could you change the title to something like New Oxygen Info Page.  That way people can look for it and until it gets a button we can keep bumpin it.

Actually, even better would be to start a new thread (shorter) called New Oxygen Info Page with the link on it and we can all keep it up.

Another question... I've never paid attention.  If you go in and modify your post will it come up to the top?
