Title: Help I am new to the board Post by hanisdee on Apr 11th, 2003, 6:20pm I guess I am supposed to share my story. I have had "spells" of migraines as I have called them since I was 12, I am now 34 -yuck! With research on the internet I have now figured out I really do have clusters which my mom diagnosed years ago(as well as a neurologist) Right now I am in about my eighth week of them after a two year break and am not only exhausted and week but feel dreadfully sorry for my children and husband. Is the hangover part really bad for everybody or is it just me? The pain itself is unbearable but I just don' t ever seem to recover completely before I am hit again. I have read many interesting things on this board, one being the water and the other being oxygen both new to me, I will have to try. I am sorry all of you suffer the way you do, but feel thankful to have people that understand what it feels like. Just a nightmare!! Chrissy |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by cluster0557 on Apr 12th, 2003, 1:56am Water has never ever ever helped me. Oxygen has worked for me if I catch a Cluster staring. In many cases it will either alleviate the pain or abort the CLuster if I get on the mask quickly. I use about 11 litre flow for 10 minutes to a half hour. With 3-4 attacks a day I go thru about 4 EE tanks a week. Insurance picks up most of it for me so my cost is around $20.00 per month. Cheaper tha Imitrex Injections every month. |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by Bonniegirl on Apr 14th, 2003, 3:31pm Chrissy, I am so sorry to hear how burned out you are. :'(I know for me, I seriously can't think straight when I'm in a cycle. ??? Even between the real hell, the constant fear of the next one and shadows seem to really wear me down. Try to catch some time in between so you can sleep, (or rest upright,like I do when I'm too freakin' tired to sleep.) I'm new around here too, so I know the relief you feel when you find this place. I've gotten tons of advice and support. I'll be thinking of you and hoping you get relief soon. -Bonniegirl |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by Wendy the Brit on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:26pm Hello Chrissy Welcome to the board :D :D. Are you taking any preventatives? I only ask because there are good ones e.g. Verapimil, but my doctor was prescribing a heavy duty antihistamine- Pizotifen (this can work to prevent migraines) but all they did was compound my lack of sleep and make me feel really ghastly in between attacks. I was so out of it in the end I crashed the car. Stopped taking them then as they do dick all to prevent Ch for me anyway. W the B |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by hanisdee on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:30pm Nope, not taking any preventatives. I am very wierd about taking medicine, and I do not always get these. This is my first spell in 2 years, but it is about to kill me. I just started a new job and thank God my bosses are so nice, otherwise I would have just lost a new job! |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by cluster0557 on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:33pm Are you seeing a Neuro for your HA? Are you just trying to ride out the pain or are you taking something for it? I would reccomend that even though you do not like meds it would be wise to get checked out. Your body will need the relief from constant pain. If not other nasties start. |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by Wendy the Brit on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:36pm Sounds to me like the best thing you could do is to use the information you have found on the site and get yourself an official diagnosis. You can then get the treatment you need. In my experience, until you get the diagnosis, doctors often prescribe a lot of wrong things, and sometimes things that are potentially dangerous. Mine prescribed oral Pethidine, but as I am, like you only a drug taker when I absolutely have to, I didn't take them. If you are very anti drugs of any kind, it strikes me that your best option is 02. W the B |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by hanisdee on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:40pm I have an appt with my general practitioner on Wednesday, called him today to see about getting O2. Found a neurologist that was recommended to me and have an appt OCTOBER 6th, by then my spell will be over, but I am still going to go just so I get in. I am not anti-medicine at all, its just I have had these since I was 12 years old and I was always afraid of becoming addicted to medication or taking something that would make it hard to have babies or hurt my little ones when I was pregnant. I have had three now I guess its time to get over it huh?? :) |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by cluster0557 on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:45pm O2 helps with 40% of the Clusters I get. Unfortunatley you need a prescription to get it. Another thing that recently has improved my chronic HA is taking 9mg of melatonin a night. I find that I sleep thru the normal REM cluster and don't get one until my 6 am rem cycle since going to it. It has gotten me off valium and Sonata that I used so I could rest. |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by Wendy the Brit on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:46pm Appointment in OCTOBER!!!!!! What's that about? Is that how it works in America? I thought the National Health Service here was bad but that's outrageous! I saw my neuro when out of cycle and it was fine, the symptoms are so distinct that when I described them, he diagnosed in about three seconds flat. Good luck with the Doctor. I took some material I had printed off from here, that might help you get the right diagnosis if you are very sure it is CH. W the B |

Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by hanisdee on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:53pm Where do I get it? |
||
Title: Re: Help I am new to the board Post by jonny on Apr 14th, 2003, 5:58pm You need to buy a used medical regulator and convert it (I can tell you how, its easy) Then all you do is send your husband down to a gas house and rent a tank of welding 02, never tell them you are going to breath it. Just say your from J&R welding and need some 02 for an onsite job and that you will need to keep getting re-fills. ............................jonny |
