Title: shadows???
Post by Scotty_Dog on Apr 11th, 2003, 2:54am
In several threads I have heard people refer to shadows.  I have been episodic for 22 years but I am not sure what shadows are.  Is that the crappy hazzy feeling I get about mid cycle, or the out of body thing, or the floaters?

Also, I heard about Pot used to get through them.  This may be the reason I do not know what they are as I was a heavy partaker of the Mary-Jane through the years.

If Pot does serve a medicinal perpose, I may start smoking it again, purly for the benifits ;D

Scott,

pain free for 6 months so far ;D

"Shadows or "Ghosts" , for me, are the warning signs of an impending attack, the not quite break through pain or smaller HA's that are usually a precurser to the beast.

Mine have become almost constant since my last attack the end of last year.  I used to be completly PF between cycles, but not this time. I can live with it for the most part, it's just the mental strain of "it" hanging over my head all of the time.

I have smoked a lot of dope through the years and I have had a lot of HA's also. They do not seem to be connected, for me. Triptans are the first ANYTHING to help me.

Congrats on the PF half year!
Mark

Shadows are defined on the very first page of this web site.

Hazy was a well known jazz musician selling over 17 records in Yugoslavia.

The out of body thing is strictly a result of what ever you were doing in the 60.

Floaters are little Iraqi battleships in the big bowl of life.

CAUTION: Smoking pot may lead to peace protesting

Research the site.

For me, shadows are the little reminder the beast gives me that he's still "here".  It's a headache that I can still work through and that doesn't make me go "hmm...should I take medication for this one?".  If it makes me inclinced to take medication, I've usually been right that the bastard isn't going to stop at a shadow.

The thing about shadows is that they are lower grade pain.  Most of teh time with real headaches I go from 0-like7 almost quicker than I can acknowledge the pain...with shadows they come on slower and leave in about 20 minutes.

And pot just increases my headaches, but there is work being done on that and hallucinogenics with migraines and clusters at MAPS.

take care

To put Linda out of her misery all I have to say on the matter is ....IF it's the floaters or the crappy feeling that comes out of yr body then I get them and Im not a sufferer...ROFLMAO!!!!

Seriously,

I did not know what was ment by shadows.  Thanks for the info.  By your deffanition, I have shadows for the whole cycle at kip 3ish.  I also have them alot inbetween cycles too.

Don, the out of body thing happens when I have not slept for 5 or 6 days, not a 60s thing, or is it?

Bummer news on the weed, kind of miss gitting numb and forgetting that I have CH for awhile.

Love and peace ???,....O NO!....I am turning into a tree hugging protester.  Must listen to Rush now!...Reading Michael Savage's book, must watch Fox news.....

Thats better...... ;D

Hi Scott.  Usually I lump all those other neurological symptoms in the category of 'shadows'.  Technically that may not be correct, but it all contributes to that ominous dread of CH.  For me it includes:

pressure and/or dull soreness behind eye
burning, tearing, twitching, red eye
stuffy or totally blocked left nose
sharp shooting pains that last for about 20 sec

I make a definate distinction between shadows and CH.  What I mean is that I don't even rate shadows on the Kip scale (even though the shadows may cause pain).  I know that it's a CH when 'sleep is not an option' (defined on Kip scale as a 7).  I can't distinguish the nuances of anything below Kip 7, and there is no way I can sleep with a CH, so my Kip scale only ranges from 7 to 10.

I know what you mean, I don't pay much attention to stuff I can sleep through, maybe that is why I did not know what a shadow was,...but the shadow knows, (bad play on word, but everyone can not be a Don.)  ;D

Thanks all
Scott

For me, shadows are close to what Amber described. Pain around the eye that is maybe Kip-2 or Kip-3 that hangs on for hours or all day. Just enough to piss me off and let me know that it's still there, and will be coming out full force later.... but I don't want to waste medication on it (especially not precious Imitrex).

I agree Eyes.  I don't count anything unless it's a seven or above.  If I can sleep through it....it's no big deal.

huh..that's how I rate my clusters too ...the sleep thing.

If I can sleep through it, it's not a full blown.  By kip 7 I know it's for real, and by 8 I'm a freak...my breathing gets irratic and I start getting twitchy and fidgety.

That's actually anothing sign between a shadow and a cluster.  I get that whole "fight or flight" thing going on with my adrenaline when I get a real cluster.  That's the real reason that I know that I don't have migraines.  If I had migraines, I wouldn't be fidgety, I'd be sleeping it off ;)

But then again, my case is medically quoted as being "baffling" and "interesting" so I may not be a good subject to go on as to what shadows are and what clusters feel like ;)

I am new to the board, however I have learned alot already.  I can relate to the shadows as I feel the CH coming on and I know what to expect (just not sure when) and I don't want to waste the meds on shadows.  My neuro has not prescribed Imitrex, he currently has me on a med salad that I'm not sure is effective.
