Post by michaelc on Apr 5th, 2003, 5:07am Can we get some definitions of "Stand Behind Our Troops" and "Support Our Troops" - i'd like to know what everyone feels is the best way to do that, this phrase is tossed around real casually like there was some ONE definition. for me it means (beforehand) protest in order to attempt to keep them out of harms way and now to pray for their safe return. |

Not arguing or bringing up negative untruths while our kids are dying over there. Standing by our troops means not just thinking of our selves and maybe sending a package to help them be comfortablein their plight to make our Freedom Free again. (Some have not showered for a month) Standing by our troops means maybe offering a tender thought to a mother, father, sister or brother.(There are families that are at this moment crying because they have lost the legacy that lives in their child) Standing by our troops means to respect our flag. (I am proud to know these brave kids that for our country VOLUNTEERED for this... I will be glad to have any of these kids be future politicians etc. Not someone that took pride in burning the symbol of our Freedom) Standing by our troops means if you are confused about something that happened or a rumor you heard doing research to be sure that what you relay to others is the truth. Standing by our troops means when you hit your knees at night you pray that not another one of them has to kill or be killed in order to retain OUR freedom. That is what I feel is Supporting the troops. I know they SUPPORT ME... Imagine that a bunch of kids that havent had the joys of living yet are fighting so that people they dont even know can live Freely and so their own kids can KNOW the same peace you protest for... sounds like they are on the same side as you... It gives us an answer of sorts and bores us into not asking follow-up questions. We seem satisfied. It isn’t enough though. I've said it too but it's no better than saying "I'm of two minds." War forces us to say stupid things. Too many seem tickled pink over this mess. This is what I don‘t get, even if it were necessary. Since I can't come up with a magic rubber bullet, I’ll have to say my heart is behind our troops, if not my head. Neither is behind what passes for our leaders. It’s the best I can do. I want the troops home soon, healthy in body and mind to help the world avoid these mistakes again. I also hope they return to a wiser and even better country. Take heart though. With some significant downturns, historically, things tend to get better. Just how deep is this valley, depends on much that we have yet to learn. Charlie |

These two lines are why we support our troops, and why we do NOT say anything negitive about our presence abroad once the war has started. These men, women, and yes children have offered, adn were not forced into protecting us. You may not agree with the war and that is fine, but once we are there the negitve talk about the goverment and the war must end and total and complete support must follow. There was a draft that left a bad taste in the mouths of Americans. Those men, women, and children were not welcomed back home and that was wrong. They were forced into fighting a fight that we did not want to be part of. America turned there back on those who were defending our freedom. Now, we are at war again, and yet again Americans turn there back on our service members by protesting the war but yet say they support our troops. You can not have it both ways. These American fighters volunteered to protect us from those who would endanger our freedoms and way of life. Stop protesting and show nothing but support, plain and simple. The other day I met a PFC Marine at a record store, and as I thanked him, he told me about how he got off a plane in California last week and was confronted by the protesters who asked him, "what gives you the right to kill innocent people?” He was speechless, because any answer would be an admission to killing the innocent. Then they started throwing rocks at him. He told me that my thanking him meant the world to him. If anyone says that they are into protesting, make sure you protest the government, and not our young men and women in uniform. There life will be on your hands if you cause one of them to question his orders in a fire fight. In 1966, I was in Oakland, California waiting for my flight when dozens of soldiers were disembarking after a tour in Viet Nam. Everyone went out of their way to avoid them. It wasn't pretty. I agree Catlin. This is the problem with saying I support the troops but protest the war. It's incomplete and is is a way to avoid the real issue. It bores us, and to me, it’s like a sedative. No one ever asks the next question. Decades ago, I'm not sure when, there was an article somewhere that basically said that maybe it's good to have a draft. Having a few people in the service who don't want to be there, keeps things from going to extremes. The idea was that it was a way to keep our leaders on their toes by not creating a military that was too handy. Don't go nuts. It’s just a rant that I found interesting. So far, our military has had a very good domestic record. There is a long history of men who refused to obey orders. They paid some stiff prices. Presidents, Kings, Prime Ministers, Clergymen, and Generals, have all stood in the dock. It's nothing new. Charlie |

You will note, that I do not speak much on the political side of it...there's a reason for that, and I won't start now. Let me just state this for the record: If I am in the presence of a Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Airmen, Coast Guard, or National Guard, and I see ANYONE (and I don't give flying fig newton how big you are) suggest what they did to that Marine, or behave like they did to that child of Ree's son's friend, or behave like they did to the woman in the car, I will not tolerate it. I may be female, but my father was a Navy man and believed in teaching me how to defend myself after I very narrowly escaped being abducted. I can, and WILL give you a fistful of evilbitch so fast you won't know what hit you. Furthermore, I was taught, and taught well, that if you take the first swing, make damn sure they don't get up, and I can promise whoever speaks negatively in my presence to these troops or their families, will not get up. The thank you's that the general population gives to a service member is beyond measure.
