Title: oH Canada
Post by Lenny on Mar 21st, 2003, 9:26am
I could not beleive what i heard >:( :o >:( ( montreal ) last night. AS an "AMERICAN", i am very offended.
Now i know that arena probably holds 15 - 20,000 people ( just guessing ). My question is,is that what you canadian's think of America? To me there is no differance
between "boo-ing" our national anthem and "burning" our flag. Please dont apologize for what happened last night ( and say they were drunk ). Please answer the question, "IS THAT WHAT CANADA THINKS OF US" ?

About a year ago, the Detroit Pistons played a home game against the Toronto Raptors. The fans booed during the Canadien national anthem. I don't know if it was just enthusiastic fans showing their support for the Pistons, or if there was some other reason. If memory serves correct, this took place not too long after Canadien soldiers were killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan.
It is not justified in either case.

No, Lenny - this is NOT how most Canadians feel at all.  What you're seeing in the media are the extreme cases, just as some of your citizens are participating in demonstrations and perpetuating the terrorism as BobP says.
I'll probably get beat up by my eastern brethren (and sistren?) for this, but out here in the west - we are totally ashamed of and disgusted by the actions (or lack thereof) of our government and the now few extremists that follow them (the concentrations of Liberals is MUCH higher in the East...i.e. Montreal).  Our slime minister has resigned, but he's given 18 month's notice of his intent.  Ample time to f*** this country up before he leaves, if you ask me.  The average Canadian these days has NO voice at all, when it comes to how our "Government" reacts.
No, Lenny - we stand beside you in this effort -- whether we believe in the act of war or not (me, personally, I hate the killing of innocents)-- we totally understand and respect the American 'take charge' attitude and can't understand why our government hasn't sent our boys and girls in to help you.  In fact, I bet the majority of the people of Canada would support your efforts if you were to put Mr. Cretin next on your list of targets.   :-[

Cjohnson - did you actually READ my post?

Montreal = France?  come on.  ::)  We may be a nation divided right now but ...  your comment was totally unjustified and VERY much an insult.

Title: Re: oH Canada
Post by CJohnson on Mar 21st, 2003, 10:55am
Please forgive me, Margi. It was not my intention to be insulting. I have family who moved to Canada from New York. I hold Canadiens in the highest regard. I live near Detroit and have been to Canada a number of times, and have only had positive experiences there. I have family in Buffalo, New York, and we prefer to go through Canada because it is so much nicer than going through th U.S. Every Canadien I have ever spoken with was very kind.

That said, I apologize for upsetting you. I regret the posting that, only because it has caused you distress.

As for the reasoning behind the post, I cite the following points, lifted directly from a website about Montreal.

Montreal is Canada's second-largest city, behind only Toronto. But with a mostly peaceful blend of French and English history and culture, Montreal is unique in Canada as well as North America.

For most tourists, the main problem in Montreal might be the language. All public signs are in French only, a law that was effected by a separatist political party who sadly never realized that the French culture is strong enough to survive without such rules. A quick brush-up on the directions and other key words and phrases would be beneficial for those driving, but otherwise, most people here speak both English and French and are happy to serve you in either language.

The two cultures of Montreal are not as apparent as they once were. Due to the rather restrictive nature of some language laws, many English speakers left the city. French is now the dominant language by far, but remnants of English culture are apparent in the architecture of many buildings.

Again, I offer you my sincerest apologies.

As a Canadian living in America, and having worked for years for the federal Canadian Government, and currently married to an active duty Air Force member of the US military, I EMPHATICALLY STATE THAT IS NOT THE OPINION OF THE GENERAL POPULOUS OF THE CANADIAN PEOPLE.

First off, please understand that the coverage the Canadians receive is not at all what the US receives.  On average, most Canadians can't even tell you what their gov't's official stand is.  Mr. Chretian, has stated they will not MILITARILY support the US.  THey do however support the liberation of Iraq, and do in fact have soldiers in the region.  Several of them trained here at Fort Drum before going.

Please keep in mind that the Canadian Armed Forces are MINIMAL in size and have stretched themselves quite thin by participating in the peace keeping actions in the balkans and in Afghanistan.

The Canadian people have little to no room to enforce or encourage policy.  About the only way they CAN show what they think is in protest.  Both countries, the US and Canada have aspects of their governments are that are very lacking to say the least.

Do you honestly believe that the booing of the national anthem in Montreal is any worse than the burning of the flag right here in the US??  Do you believe that the hollywood stars speaking out so vehemently is less of an insult than a very SMALL group of people protesting in Canada?

Canada is undergoing some very difficult political times.  So is the US.  Don't slam CAnadians, and don't slam Americans.  The war is on, ignore the protesters everywhere and get behind the troops.  I've personally witnessed protests in CAnada that involved serbian CAnadians burning the Canadian Flag, while my husband was in a camp 10 miles from the serbian border trying to save his ass when migs flew over.  Don't get me going on protestors of either country.  I will take them all and shove their respective flags down their throats and pull it out their ass.  Just as there are misinformed and mis understood protesters in the US there are in Canada as well.

Getting down off my soap box before I get in trouble.

Thanks for the apology Curtis.  I was more insulted by the comparison of political feelings towards France at the moment, than the heritage of our nation.  I was worried that Americans are thinking that we are siding with the French and, we sure aren't.  There may be an under-current of Anti-Americanism in the extremists groups here, but they sure don't speak for the majority of us.

ANYWAYS...again, thanks.  :)

Oh, and for your useless trivia file, the French that is spoken in Canada is "Quebecois" - very different from Parisian French.  For example, "potato" in Parisian French is "pomme de terre" (apple of the earth), whereas Quebecois is "potate".  We actually do have some original and logical ideas here in Canada.  ;)

p.s.  OK, Cat said it WAY better than I ever could.  She's exactly right in every word of her post.  You GO, girl.

Cjohnson,
It is in the best interest NOT to get into the political aspect of Quebec in relation to the rest of Canada.  There are years and years of political referendums that precede most of what is in that province right now.  Canada is OFFICIALLY a bilingual country.  Many people have followed the differences very closely.  The final referendum on Quebec that was voted by the entire country was a resounding and unanimous vote that Quebec IS a part of Canada and that seperation is NOT wanted.

Think of it this way, a brother and sister in the same family can fight with each other, call each other names and beat each other up, but if an outsider does, they will come together and whoop ass. ;)

Lenny:

As much as I have tried to stay away from any of the 'political/war' threads, I feel I have to say something about this.  I wouldn't want to alienate any Central/Eastern Canadian that agrees with your effort, regardless of how the Liberals in Central/Eastern Canada treat the West. (I don't really want to get started on that.  I could go on for hours!!!)

I agree with Margi, as do all of my co-workers that have heard the news.  It has been a hot topic at work this morning.

I am REALLY pissed off about that childish display, but am not surprised by it when you consider where it came from.  (sorry to anyone from that part of Canada that doesn't agree with the effort)  I don't think (and
really hope) you would ever hear/see a reaction like that from Western Canada and would hate to be included in such a 'group'.

Regardless of what some think, the US is our closest friend and ally and everyone I've talked to already today is thoroughly ashamed/embarrassed about this.

Grant

P.S.   The Canadians are finally thinking about helping America with the war against Iraq.  We have pledged 2 of our biggest battle ships, 600 ground troops and 6 fighter jets.  After the exchange rate, the Americans ended up with 2 Mounties, 1 canoe and a bunch of flying squirrels.

BTW, when have Americans ever really cared what Canada says anyways?
LOL!  ;D

Amen, Cat.  See, folks?  Cat's an easterner, but I still love her anyways. Well said, Cat. Hell, I even MARRIED an Easterner!!   :o

If it weren't for Canada, there would be no Detroit Red Wings. Hooray for Canada! Heck, I even own a throwback Canadiens jersey. (It looks soooo cool)

I didn't think it was that big of a deal when Canada's national anthem was booed at the Pistons game, and I don't consider the booing of America's national anthem in Montreal to be a big deal. In fact, I don't know anyone who thought either of these events would impact the relationship between the 2 countries.

As far as I am concerned, and I have been in and through Canada a number of times, the U.S. and Canada are pretty much the same. Except Canada has nicer people and better beer, but lousy smokes and crappy football.

Wow.. I don't know where to start. I am a Montrealer and first, I will say that the people at the hockey game are NOT a microcosm of Canada, Montreal or Quebec. Second, during last year's playoffs, the Canadian anthem was booed in NY and Philadelphia. Shit happens. If you are going to go off and get upset every time someone boos your national anthem, this world will not last very long.

Isn't the whole Iraq conflict about lack of understanding and tolerance??? Don't add fuel to the already out of control fire. Think before you make a comment and as Bob said: "Who gives a shit what happens at a hockey game." ...of course, unless the Canadiens are about to win a Stanley Cup..then I give a shit.

If we are all able to live and let live this war and most senseless conflict would never occur. Of course, when it comes to injustice, something must be done, but let's all just get along people.

I thank you all for your comments.
For whatever reason  ???,i cant figure this quote thing out ( everytime i try it,all i get are tiny lines.
As far as your question goes ( catlind ),you cant beleive that i compare booing the national anthem in
( montreal ) to people burning our flag in the U.S.( I DO ). Now i have a question for you, where do you get the balls to compare americans burning an american flag in the U.S.( were they americans ? ) to people boo-ing the american national anthem from abroad ( non -americans in "montreal" ) with all the anti-american bullshit going around, yeah i dont like it. I really dont think you are qualified to tell me what an american should feel.
As far as your other statemant ( hollywood stars ) wearing their pins, they are americans ( i dont have to like it and I DONT ) then again they are AMERICANS.

As an American i do get offended by a non-american talking out of their ass.

BTW - FUCK what the hollywood stars ( as you call them ) have to say!!! Most of them dont know if their male or female. Now its back to work ( i spent my lunch on this site ).

Lenny,  I will ask you to reread my post.  You will notice that I discuss protesters in both countries burning flags of their own countries and state quite plainly what I would love to do them.  Are the protesters American??  I suggest you check things a little more closely.  Many many of the anti war protesters are NOT American citizens, but merely pissant permanent residents.  I refer to it in that tone as that is what you have indicated I am.

What are my qualifications?  Shall I discuss with you the 2 tours in Korea, 3 tours in Bosnia, and his role in Operation Enduring Freedom that my husband of the USAF has given to this country?  Shall I discuss with you the multiple families I have witnessed say goodbye to their loved ones as they board planes to unknown destinations?  What about the fear in my children's eyes (my AMERICAN CITIZEN child) who wants to know when his daddy is coming back?  The fear of the children when they realize that they are talking about IF their daddy is coming back, and not when?  My husband, with my full and unwavering support, has given 20 years of his life to the United States Military that defends your right to say what you did.  *I* have sacrificed for America by sitting at home waiting desperately for the slightest tidbit of news as to my husbands life or death.  I have sat and waited with fellow wives as we anxiously await the arrival of the tan sedans to say he is dead.

Do not DARE to question my qualifications to speak about war, protest and America.

Obviously you view me as less than an american, despite the fact that I am DIRECTLY affected by almost every military action that happens.

It is my turn to be insulted.  Perhaps I should stop supporting the military as much?  Would that please you more?

AS has been stated many times in this thread, it's hardly one sided when someone boo's an anthem.  Perhaps you can explain to me why Americans had the audacity to boo the Canadian National Anthem over something so inconsequential as a sports event?  And yet it is morally irresponsible of a small leftist group of Canadians to boo the American National Anthem over a WAR?  You are upset at their actions, SO TOO ARE THE CANADIANS.

Look into your own back yard before you condemn others in theirs.

Oops!  I missed that topic.  I was fighting my own war with the beast this week (and he is winning...).

But as a Montrealer who was at that game, here is my two cents on the topic.  First of all, I missed the anthem (I always do) so I wasn't even aware of the situation until I read the paper the following morning.

A lot of people in Montreal are for peace (with the army we have, do we really have a choice ;)).  A few peace march were held in Montreal during the last month and the turnouts have been huge (hundreds of thousands of people in freezing weather).  I think this is what the people were trying to say by booing.  I don't think it should be interpreted as an anti-american statement.  I don't excuse them.  I think booing was extremely stupid.  They say there's nothing more stupid than a crowd.  The hockey crowd that night certainly fits the profile.  So to your question Lenny, I answer this: No, I don't think that's what Canadians (or Montrealers) think of the US.

The Montreal Canadiens President issued a formal press release to aphologize for the situation and has asked fans to act with more class.  Yesterday's game (against the Carolina Hurricanes) was conducted without incident. They pulled out a Montreal hero, Jean Béliveau (for you older hockey fans) before the anthem and the crowd responded with a lot of respect.

I truly hope this will not happen again.

Sheila: Time's have changed
Our kids are kids are getting worse
They wont obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
Sharon: Should we blame the government?
Liane: Or blame society?
Dads: Or should we blame the images on TV?
Sheila: No, blame Canada
Everyone: Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their beady little eyes
And flappin heads so full of lies
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Sheila: We need to form a full assault
Everyone: It's Canadas fault!
Sharon: Don't blame me
For my son Stan
He saw the darn cartoon
And now he's off to join the Klan!
Liane: And my boy Eric once
Had my picture on his shelf
But now when I see him he tells me to fuck myself!
Sheila: Well, blame Canada
Everyone: Blame Canada
It seems that everythings gone wrong
Since Canada came along
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Some Guy: There not even a real country anyway
Ms. McCormick: My son could've been a doctor or a lawyer it's true
Instead he burned up like a piggy on a barbecue
Everyone: Should we blame the matches?
Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
Sheila: Heck no!
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their hockey hubbabaloo
Liane: And that bitch Anne Murray too
Everyone: Blame Canada
Shame on Canada
The smut we must stop
The trash we must smash
Laughter and fun
must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before someone thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus

I know all you Canadian clusterheads and supporters know I like to have fun with you all, and I love ya all to death.  However, with that said, your government is kinda messed up, and it flows down to your news agencies.

Last night, I was getting my fill of CNN and the latest update on the " Crisis in Iraq", when I decided to look for other sources on my 80 million channel system.  Lo and behold I got the CBC ( Canadian Broadcast Company, I think).  At first, I didn't know who CBC was, until it became obvious after watching about 30 minutes of it.  It was fascinating, to say the least.

They were reporting on the same stories, using the same pics and film as CNN, but the spin was entirely different.  1st, CBC's Canadian Military Expert ( oxymoron?)  was stating that the war was not going well for the coalition, that the units were understaffed and bogged down.  He went as far as stating this was going to be like Viet Nam and the soviet's Afghanistan.  He kept ragging on British troops being bogged down is Basra and that they will lose that city.

It was clear that he was trying to make the point that Canada was justified in not supporting this war, and further more, was smart in not joining the coalition.  His spin was made on the same tape and pics as was Clarks's comments were being made on CNN.

While CNN was focusing on how aid was finally coming in and more to follow, CBC was showing how the effort was, in fact, a chaotic effort, and that even as they were taking the aid, the Iraqi's were shouting pro Saddaam and anti-coalition slogans.

Then they switched to government officials in Canada, and the strong rebuke by the American Ambassador to Canada.

It was fascinating, your government response ran the gambit from agreeing with the Ambassador, to stating that he is full of crap.

It was almost like a West to East type of thing.... The West seemed very pro-coalition, and the East was anti-coalition, to the Newfies trying to find Iraq on the map!  ;D

It was the 1st time I saw your PM addressing parliment.  I have to say, he is about as articulate as a paper clip.

The most disappointing thing to me was the left-wing, anti-american slant from the CBC.  It was remarkable how 180 they were from CNN

I know how to end the USA/Canadian dispute, this thread AND the war in Iraq with one simple move.

Pull out the coalition troops and send in the NHL.
Them dudes know how to fight!

And Margi, take notice I refrained from any slurs regarding Canada. Why? Knowing what I now know about Canadian girls I want to be real good friends.
You Canadians. Your the best.

That's right Don :)

You don't want to piss off the Canadian girls, that would be very very bad!  ;)

Ask any of our husbands (Canadian or American or Other) if you piss us off, we have quite alot of land in the north that can put a whole new meaning on frigid ;)

Still waiting to hear from Lenny.....

Cat
(who has no intention of making nice just yet)
