Title: an obituary...please try to understand... Post by Not4Hire on Mar 11th, 2003, 8:03pm don't ask much of y'all.....but I don't know where else to put this.... please don't respond *on-board*....if ya care, ya know where I am.....believe me, without all of you, I'd be with my ole POPS.......this is one year wthout the ole sumbitch..... Open letter from Fred Lichens, long-time resident of Elko County, Nevada to his friends and family. Fred passed peacefully in his sleep on March 11, 2002 in Hamilton, Montana with his family nearby and this letter was found in his effects. We will miss him. I was born September 10, 1921 to Fred and Effie Lichens in Grants Pass, Oregon. The family including my sister Rose lived at the home ranch at Provolt, Oregon. I remained there through all the school years and until I was 20. At that time I started ranching on my own and also in partnership with my parents and sister, Rose. Rose still lives in Oregon. I married Barbara Whitsett in August 1942 and we moved to Lamoille in 1949-50 where we bought the V7 Ranch. In the ensuing years we bought, sold and operated numerous ranches in Elko County. Each ranch was always improved and left in better condition. I leave behind Barbara, a faithful, loving and caring wife. Son and daughter, Stephen and Linda, loving, caring and considerate. The very best. To these three, I owe much and thank them for overlooking my many faults, and loving me regardless. I should have done better. There are also wonderful grandchildren-Nicole, Amber, Shanna, Grace, Eric and Daniel—great grandchildren Rebecca, Joshua, and Brandyn—and niece, Gail. I thank the ranchers in Lamoille for putting up with my unorthodox operations even though they questioned my sanity at least twice a year. They are a good bunch: Carl, Gene, Jess, Joe Z., Joe S., Bill, Al, Eldon, Dan, Duilio. Also many friends and acquaintances scattered around Elko and Elko County. The coffee club will miss my generous contribution and excessive tips to the waitresses. I never knew how to fish and with the exception of a few illegal deer in the 50’s I never liked to shoot anything. The spring runoff and waterfalls in Lamoille Canyon and the fall colors. The winter and summer sunset on the Rubies, the early morning drive from Halleck to Secret Pass Ranch, smell of wet sagebrush and a new cut hayfield, sweaty horse and a wet saddle blanket. These were my enjoyment every day. I always felt when my time come it would be just like moving camp to a better location. I could have done worse but I sure could have done a lot better. ....thanks |

Post by Margi on Mar 12th, 2003, 9:59am Aw Steve, I'm sorry that yesterday was a sad anniversary for you. :( Your dad sounded like a wonderful guy and you and your family were much the richer for having him in your lives as long as you did. Peace be with him and your family. p.s. I know you said not to comment 'on board'....but I never was very good at following directions. ;) |
