What do you know about oleamide?  A lipid that induces sleep and affects 5HT.

Any research done on this in conjunction with CH?

I am cross referencing seemingly unrelated things...

So, if I am way off base....please explain if you can.

Sherry

Sherry,

I would sincerely doubt that anyone is conducting any research with CH and oleamide. The reason is a simple one. CH are a vascular phenomenon and the dilitation and constriction of the vessels are controlled by calcium and other ions that are water soluable. Oleamide is a lipid based compound (fat) that adsorbs onto chemical receptors in the brain to induce the responses you referred to. That all being said, there is little to suggest that the increased blood flow to the brain is allowing more of a substance to interact with the brain to cause the headaches we all are having.

hope that is helpful,
simon

Ok, on that note, I must depart. I got absolutely nothing done here tonight but it was a blast.
And dont you worry about my crack, Jonny....(wanna see it?)  LMAO, I'm getting as insane as you tonight.
Nitey nite,

Ok thsa/simon,  now help me here please.
what I read (and it was only brief info) was basically about sleep deprivation.  It said this lipid was present in sleep deprived animals (but also said it induces sleep) it also said that it acts upon 5ht receptors.  It also said there was hypothalamic interaction of some sort... like I said it was brief... and it was in medicalese LOL!

Many Ch'ers have some sort of sleep problems (which get even worse after the ch cycle sets in)  And from what I have read, pain and 5ht receptors are connected.

I know no one wants to give me a course in human biochemistry... but, discounting popular theories (in other words, say the vascular component is a secondary symptom, is there any way that there could be any connection whatever with this fatty acid (whether it be too much or too little) with our condition?

Irritatingly curious Sherry

Sherry,

OK, here is your food for thought.

Let's say that your body requires X amount of Y compound (oleamide) to induce a proper sleep cycle. Lets also assume that Y is made outside of the brain and needs to get to the brain via the bloodstream. Now lets say that you are at an imbalance with the proper amount of Y, and now have a sleep disorder. The response your body chooses can take several forms...

1. Increase the amount of receptors in the brain to Y to take full advantage of the amount of Y present. ( ie, no vascular effect.)

1a. If the amount of the receptors in the brain CANNOT be changed, then vasodilation resulting in greater delivery of Y to the brain is an option. (ie increase vasodilation)

2. Increase the amount of Y being produced to flood the receptors in the brain. (ie. no vascular effect)

3. Simply vasodilate to increase delivery of Y to the brain. (ie. vasodilation)

Although there are other permutations, just to keep things simple we will go with these. In these example 1a might be a temporary thing (episodic CH) and 3 might represent a more persistant problem (chronic CH).

Please keep in mind that this is ALL THEORETICAL. I do not proport to this theory, but it COULD happen this way, who knows.

Will let you know when you get irritating ;)

Cool!  Thanks.  that does help alot! I get these ideas about what could cause these things and sometimes I get hung up in all the medical terminology and workings...thank goodness for dictionaries!!LOL

I will have to research further now......hmmm.....

;D

Thanks again!
Sherry
