Title: my intro
Post by ComputerGeek on Jan 18th, 2003, 11:41pm
Hi Everyone,

This is acutually not my first post here but I got off on the wrong foot so I'm trying things differently with a simple intro of my self.   I'm male, in my 40's, and have a family.  I work full time as a database administrator and go to school full time as well.  I have had cluster headaches for a bout 11 years now.  They started when I gave up drinking coffee (I have now mended my ways and still drink coffee :-)).  I few days after quiting coffee I experinced my first cluster.  It lasted for about 2 minutes and was so unuusal and painful that I went to see my doctor.  He said it was caffiene withdrawl.  I said that it was something more than that.  He disagreed and I went home.  The headaches continued to get worse in pain, frequency, and length.  Eventually after several trips to the emergency room he took me serious and diagnosed cluster headaches.  I then started trying all kinds of drugs like cafergot, bellergal, beta blockers, and finally the initial one to work, Elavil (not sure if I am spelling it right, its been a while since I was on it).  I was on this crappy drug for about 4 years and then went off.  About a year later the CHs started up again.  I then found a nuro who put me on Sansert as a preventative and Imitrex injections for aborting.  The headaches are always on the right side of my head, my eye droops, my right nostril runs, right side of face sometimes hurts, and  I sweat. They come around November and leave around February each year.  I can't sit down or really do anything but hit my head and pace when they occur.  I have a 2 and 1/2 year old daughter so right now when I do get a CH and its not in the middle of the night, I hide in my closet (its big enought to pace in).  Any way,  Sansert has really changed my life for the better.  I get my kidneys checked every 3 months.  I have gotten a wealth of information from this site over the last few years.  Thank-you. And thank-you to woobie for all the kind words.

Pat

P.S.- sorry for any bad feelings my initial posts may have caused.

Welcome back and I remember the coffee thing. Coffee is a hobby with me. The idea of not drinking it has never occurred to me.  My attacks ended more than 11 years ago but I can find no reason other than I was 45 at the time. I know how lucky I am.  Maybe you'll have the same experience.

Stick around and l guess you already know the players here. Glad to have you.

Charlie

You and I are in the same boat, my friend. Sansert has been a life saver for me. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but it has been discontinued by Novartis. Hopefully this means that they've found something better with which to replace it (I heard about something called Methergine on another thread). You might want to talk to your neuro about it.

We can hope, right?

Hi Pat,

Welcome to the cluster family.  I never tried the coffee thing to abort an attack but I know lots of CHers do that. Glad you came aboard....stick around.

Pat,

Sorry you have to join "our little club", but glad to meet you anyway.  Glad to hear the pharmaceutical LSD...er...Sansert is working for you ::).  Continue to educate yourself on your condition through use of this site and the OUCH website is the best advice I can give.

Peace,

-R
