I've had cluster headaches for the last 20 years. Mine are seasonal, every fall through the winter. I'm 48 now and every web site I've seen talk about when people usually start to get them, but I haven't seen anything on whether they eventually go away as a person ages. Anyone come across any data on this or am I doomed for life?

27 years chronic and counting, Hell, I know of a dude that has had them nearly 50 years.

On the other hand there is Charlie, he hasent had on in 11 years.

There are a few that have successfully dodged the bullet when they get in their fiftys. Like you, at 48, I'm hoping to go PF within the next decade. I've had them for almost 30 already -- once I hit 40 I'm looking for the party and the watch.

Jonny's right. There may be an age factor. I've been pain free since I was 45. In April, it will be 12 years without an attack. They also disappeared during one of the most stressful times of my life. Beats me. They started when I was 23 and disappeared when I was 45. I'm not 100% sure that they won't return, but it looks better every year. Maybe you will benefit from an age factor...if it really exists. I hope so.

I sure hope this age thing is true. I wonder sometimes if I get older and am unable to communicate what I would do when my cycle hits. Man that would really suck to have to just lay there.

Does this mean that since I didn't start having these damn things till I was 43......I can hope that when I'm 84 they might go away? whaaaaaaaaaa :'( :'( :'( :'(

Mine stopped dead, no tapering off, in 1986. I had them for 28 years, without fail, every spring and fall for 6 weeks per episode. I do say "why me Lord,?" but with a different feeling than customary.

I don't know why they stopped, but I do believe the Hypothalamus' part in hormone distribution plays a part in the cluster headache syndrome. That, and hardening of the arteries.

Good question,
Up untill the end of last year mine seemed to be tapering off, both in frequency and severity. Until August of last year when I got hit with one of the worst cycles ever. 2 or 3 K-10 a day for 40 days with weeks of aftershocks. I hope the age thing does finally factor in. Like Charlie, I have a friend at work , in his 50's, that hasent had an attack in almost 10 years. Mine started at age 13 and I will be 42 this year. A break would be nice.

I didn't have them until I was 45. Had them for about a year with no breaks...then they disappeared for 5 years and returned about 9 months ago. Why they came after 45 years I'll never know and then the 5 year haitus and bam! they're back??? There are no answers and no patterns as far as I can see.

Ya know sbarker I've tried to find real research on when they go away too to no avail..Is it a myth?.The only word is usually from the docs who say that they "seem" to go away when you get older.. Whats that mean?.... Did all the elder clusterheads just give up on docs so they never see them to report. Or did they just go away when they died......... Every day I think I'm old enuff now and damned if I dont have to get older still. wont be long and I'll be pushin 46. Like I've said before, will just have to keep practicing to make them go away. When I was 20 I just assumed by the old age of 30 they would be gone. One thing is for sure They are an affliction in our lifetimes........mj

Some docs says that this might go away when we becomes "grownups&adults".But nobody told us the definition of a adult in these cases.

Sorry kids, it may not work that way. I just turned 54 and I had never had a CH until last month. >:(

Maybe it's because I don't want to grow up and be an adult. Too damn much responsibility! ;D

Brassbear, there's alot to be learned from AA Milne and the house at pooh corner. The Tao of Pooh is one of my favourite books. Wouldn't it be great if we could all be "Pooh's".

I just turned 51 and I've had them since I was a young kid, they just called them migraines back then. I only discovered the term cluster headache back in about 1994. I thought I was the only guy who had them for most of my life until then. When my newly found neuro explained the symptoms they were described exactly as I had them.

I was happier when I found this site early last year and could interact with fellow sufferers.

I went 3 or 4 years CH free a few year back and thought they had gone for ever. Then wham - welcome home!

My mum also suffered from regular migraines most of her life until she reached about 45 then they just stopped.

I'm 45 and have CH's for about 18 years now and although the cycles keep coming almost every fall I have noticed that I don't have as many k-9's & 10's as I used to have in the past. I still get 'em occasionally but for the most part they seem to peak at around a 7 or 8 and for that I'm grateful.

Going to be 50 next month had them for over 5 yrs.
3-4 cycles a year.from may 2002 to jan 2003 had
3cycles still in this one.getting worst for me right
now.

I'd have to say I qualify under #2. ;D
