Title: Jonny
Post by Silver_Dolphins on Dec 27th, 2002, 8:06pm
I am confused (what else is new). Some doctors have told me I need to use a rebreather mask, yet everyone here says NON rebreather.

I am starting my 02 treatment Monday, as soon as I find a new neuro. Firing this one. When I call his office for a prescription, I damn well expect it, so here I sit with a kip6, pissed as hell, and am considering driving to the EMS station, but I need to know EXACTLY how to use 02.

Thank you.

You want to use a non-rebreather mask at a flow rate of 8-15 LPM's

Give me a few mins and ill post a pic of the mask.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I guess it is too late now to go to the EMS, but when the next one hits, I will be pestering them.

Watch, the station will  be deserted because of some disaster.

Here a link to a picture of a non-rebreather mask...http://www.jlenterprise.com/nrbmx.html
The mask has a one way valve that allows the tank to fill the bag O2. When you exhale, that air goes out through one way valves in the mask. So you're not re-breathing stuff you already breathed once; hence the name.

Depending on how you breathe, you usually need to gently squeeze the bag when you inhale. Sometimes the valves on the sides of the mask fall off or leak, so you might need to block them (another great use for duct tape). The idea is to be breathing 100% oxygen.

If you are using O2 at 6-15 LPM, don't fall asleep whith it on... easy to do at night when the pain starts fading. You won't die, it will just dry your lungs out which hurts.

If your doc gives you the wrong mask (intentionally or un-intentionally), head down to one of those home health stores that sell wheelchairs, walkers, and 3 foot tall toilet seats. Many also carry O2 masks.

when i had my first series of CH's (7 yrs ago), I remember my Neuro gave me a slip of paper to take to the ER, outlining to put me directly on 02 and skip the crap. HAHAHAHAHAHA......first we did my insurance info, then they felt the need to take blood pressure, temperature, etc., by the time they were done, my CH had run it's course.  Last trip to the ER for me.

(sorry, not related, just reminded me of the experience)

I have heard all the horror stories of the ER visits. I know what would happen. The Beast would leave and they would all think I was just trying to get some drugs or that I was nuts.

On a better note, I went to the firestation the other day and introduced myself to the crew on watch. They said they would be more than happy to facilitate my requests and understood the situation. These were the FIREFIGHTERS not the EMT's. However, they also said they would relay my requests to all the shifts, so that nobody gets surprised at 2 am.

I have not had to go to the station, but it is good to know that I can. It is less than a mile from my house.

sadly enough i am.  not in extreme 8-9 pain mind you (that would be sumthing to see, heh?).  this current bout is a strange one (imagine that).  for the last 5 days, i think i've only had a few hrs each day with the pain level being a 1.  i can joke at 2-3.....not much more, but i can joke

just got finished looking up in the phone book my Neuro's name....i hate the thought of all this b.s. ahead of me

also just realized i wasn't in remission for 6 yrs....had a bout 3 yrs ago...just didn't know what it was...i feel so dumb

~as i sit here sniveling away~  I called the Neuro's office today.  Six years, hmmmmmmmmm, new patient.  Need a referral (no kiddin').  The dr. can see you in 2 weeks.....yeah, right.

Obviously this receptionist has no compassion for CH pain (can't blame her, she' clueless).

I am feeling sorry for myself this a.m.  Gotta snap outta it.

Jonny.....no feedback from others......I don't understand.....am i stupid for not realizing i had an "attack" 3 yrs ago?????

I don't know if i am more scared to have another attack or for tomorrow with the new doctor  :'(

thanks Pam.

I think the reason I didn't realize what was happening 3 yrs ago is that I had gum surgery (along the jawline where pain occurs).  I was on a lot of narcotics.  I remember for the last 3 years I thought the periodontist was a butcher and looking back, I remember the look on his face that he did not believe I could possibly be in the pain that I was in (I went to see him every other day for months).  They then sent me to an endontist, however, he was not the right person either.

I feel so ashamed for the things I said about him ~blush~
