Title: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by StanTheMan on Dec 8th, 2002, 9:54am While they can often provide interesting chat, rhetorical questions (e.g. "Would you trade your CH for migraines?") are often emotionally charged -- as witnessed recently. And often, the questions (while interesting to consider) are rather pointless. I mean, we're always going to find people that are better off or worse off than ourselves. Why compare ourselves? A question like: "Would you, a CH'er, trade places with a quadraplegic?" would generate a wide variety of comments, I'm sure -- but why even ask the question in the first place? We are who we are -- all from different walks of life, different parts of the world, and all with very different struggles with a very dibilitating disorder. Migraine sufferers have their own struggles -- and for any us to walk around with a chip on our shoulder and have a "we have it worse than you" attitude is only going to make us more isolated in the long run. Folks, the heavy in-fighting that took place between a couple of our "veteran" board members really made me feel sad. More importantly, it does not make a good impression for newcomers, or can make some visitors become VERY hesitant to post questions. It's one thing to have disagreement or even somewhat heated exchanges. It's quite another to start bashing another person's character or do a lot of name calling. In the future, the people should take their flame throwing "discussion" off-line -- to personal e-mail -- not the MB. Okay... 'nuff said - I hope. Prayers, StanTheMan :( |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by jonny on Dec 8th, 2002, 10:15am So I take it you want to be next, Stan? For one DORK is not a veteran of this board. Two......Never compare Meegraines with CH...."We have it worse than you"?....Whats that shit all about? Do you have CH?, Id give my left nut to have meegraines instead of CH. This is a CH board and thats that, Meegrainers be gone (Unless they also have CH or support) Lets party :D .......................jonny ;D ;D ;D ;D |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by StanTheMan on Dec 8th, 2002, 11:07am Jonny, "Never compare Meegraines with CH...." If you re-read the first part of my post, you'll notice that I asked the question: "Why compare ourselves?" Meaning: compare my battle with CH with anybody elses battle in life, whether that be CH's , migraines, cancer, you-name-it. "Do you have CH?" Yes, I do. Episodic since '93. But that has nothing to do as to why I posted. My point was (and still is): 1. Treat message board posters with dignity and respect. Be nice. 2. Take flame wars to personal e-mail. Please. 3. Try not to compare your struggles with another person's. You haven't walked a mile in their shoes anymore that they've walked a mile in yours. Who disagrees? I hope you don't Jonny. But if you wish to flame me just for tactfully speaking my mind, go ahead. I'll still treat you the I way I would want to be treated. Regards to all and best wishes for PFDAN. StanTheMan |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by Roxy on Dec 8th, 2002, 1:06pm This might be somewhat off topic...but, the topic was rhetorical questions and musing. Why am I sitting here wasting a perfectly good (but cold) Sunday afternoon watching the Dallas Cowboys play football? Is this actually football...or Jerry Jones idea of a farce? I don't expect anyone to give me answers...but, it's like a bad train wreck, you can't quit watching! |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by ave on Dec 8th, 2002, 1:37pm There is a black down side to "always be nice, esp. for the newbies". It means you never, ever get to say what you feel or mean. It means agreeing to each and every platitude thrown at you, just to keep the peace. Shee it, I hate fights as much as the next gal; even more, maybe. They literally make me sick. But being OBLIGED to be nice to others makes me sick too. There are moments when not saying what we mean, because of the So choose. Oh, and having had migraines before and clusters nowadays: Yes, I'd go back to Migraines if I could. |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by Slammy on Dec 10th, 2002, 6:13pm Ok, I can't let this go! ;D It just blows me away that someone who's been here less than a couple of months is going to lecture me how to conduct myself on this message board. Especially with the "holier than thou" approach! You wanna preach? go find a preaching board where you guys can go and knock yourself out! This self- rightious, self- appointed champion, for all the newbies and lurkers out there that need protection from us plainspoken clusterheads is pompus bullsh*t! If a person is truly sufferin from clusterheadaches, our in-house banter is NOT going to scare them away! You know why? Cuz it is not about them, or have anything to do with them! And it's not about you! I don't tell anyone how or not how to post! But if it's posted..it's open game! just like you, just like me! Slammy was going on hiatus for a bit..kinda burned out of this "why can't we just get along" crap. But you know what? You have inspired me! I will stick around and post my slammyisms until Deeej tells me that I am not welcome here any more. MY NAME IS SLAMMY. AND I SUFFER FROM EPISODIC CLUSTERHEADACHES! and this is my home! Slammy Rant is over.. have a nice fucken day! Slammy 8) |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by RevDeFord on Dec 10th, 2002, 7:50pm Stan, I agree with the premise in your post, but I do have a problem with it as well. These guys have been here a long long time more than I have, and more than you have as well. Even though this is my second go around as I took a year off to vegetate, I still consider myself a guest here. Ultimately, I do not pay for the board, the hosting, or any of the fringe benefits. I got majorly flamed my first post back and learned my lesson there. I try to give encouragement when I can, give humor even when I can't, and close an eye when I have to. As a result, I may not always be comfortable with the language used, but I can look past that and see some pretty cool people who suffer from the same condition as I do....... Except for slammy......he is just wrong... ;D ;D ;D ;D |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by pimmony on Dec 11th, 2002, 4:32am I am a newbie and recently was encouraged to talk more and I embraced that with both tap tappy hands and heart. I would hate to think that people felt obliged to be nice to me when they felt far from inclined but I also hope that no one would br prejudiced in their behaviour towards me simply because I am new on the forum? I love when people are really, sincerely, nice to one another but that is born of a really abusive personal history and is subjective. I have to refight victim behaviour still and that consumes so much energy and effort and I hope not to have to do it is all. not that I cannot, not that I will not, just I prefer not. However, I also hope that I am not constrained by parameters either and that I am free to post without having to ingratiate myself. I want to be the real me too - in fact that is all I can be. |

Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by pimmony on Dec 11th, 2002, 4:35am Ohhh one realy important thing I meant to say ..... When people were fighting I was really really confused because people slang each other off in a friendly way and folks with more yang in them seem to even flame quite seriously with affection. The sad thing is I read those threads and thought that it was a brutal but affectionate flamefest :-[ |

I just wish they'd hunt the Lion they're tracking together for more than 11 seconds, instead of splitting the difference and argueing about the same crap again and again and again, while the Real King roars his mighty head off with laughter and goes and back home to shag Mrs Lion till someone has the courage to come looking for him again. Title: Re: Rhetorical Questions and musings... Post by RevDeFord on Dec 11th, 2002, 4:22pm The Bible doesn't say you can't have a gun. When Peter cut off the soldier's ear, Jesus didn't say ,"Hey Peter, what are you doing with that gun?" Instead he said, "If you live by the sword you will die by the sword." Same way with guns....if you live by them, you will die by them. If you like them because they are fun and they enable me to protect my family, ain't no problems. I know more Christians who have guns than non-Christians. Most of the people fighting in the Civil War were Christians, and the same with the Revolutionary. I love my Dragunov.....I can snipe a target at 250 yds. Never tried farther because I don't own that much property. |
