Title: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by The_Answer on Dec 5th, 2002, 8:06pm Hey everybody... I had an experience today which prompted me to seek information on the web--my head hurt like it never has before. It happened a few days ago with similar symptoms, only it wasn't as severe. Let me explain a little about myself and what happened so you guys might be able to understand better.... (I'm scared to death I had one of these CH's). I'm a college student, and have been healthy my entire life. I'm very active, and am always playing one sport or another. These past few weeks have been rather chaotic w/ final exams and all (haven't been sleeping or eating all that well, and consequently I have had a cold/sore throat for the last week). Just a few nights ago, I felt a headache coming on. I have gotten headaches periodically my entire life (one every 3 weeks or so, they away when I lie down and take an advil, no problem), but this one felt different. It sorta came on slowly, but it was restricted to behind one of my eyes. Not only that, when I pressed in that area with my finger it was tender. It got worse and worse, and finally I had to take a few advil, get some food in me, and lay down. It was more prolonged in going away than my normal headaches, but it wasn't a show-stopper by any means. I kinda chalked it off as being a sinus-related headache (with my cold an all). TODAY, GOOD LORD, OUCH! I had today off from class, and decided I was gonna catch up on all the sleep I had been missing from studying by sleeping in until around 1:30pm. I wasn't up for even an hour and this headache started coming on. It again was restricted to behind one eye, and the area around there was again tender when I pressed on it. It got worse and worse, so I took a few tylenol and went to lay down. Then, it hit me--lying down seemed to almost make this thing worse. I squirmed all over my bed for who knows how long, and rubbed the area above my eye viciously in some hope that the pain would subside. I had never had a headache like this before--I had no idea what to do, and what could I do? I finally decided that laying down was getting me anywhere, so I started thinking about going for a grueling run--anything to get my mind of this pain in my head. I kept pressing on that region, and even took another advil. I felt COMPLETELY hopeless. Finally, somehow I made it through the pain by lying down again and just FOCUSING on the pain itself (odd, eh?). It started to die down after about 2 hours.... ARG! It hurts just remembering it! :( ANYWAY, does this sound like these so called CHs? AS soon as I felt up to it, I logged online and started searching for information on headaches restricted to behind one eye (remember, I have had headaches before, but they are normal--go away w/ advil and sleep). I hope this merely has something to do with a congested sinus path behind/above my eye, and is not an indication I am in a long haul for the rest of my life w/ these things. Does this sounds like a CH? Could a sinus infection trigger something that may be associated with or feel like a CH? Any insight at all? Thanks for any responses. I hope all who suffer from these things are able to find adequate treatment. |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by Ted on Dec 5th, 2002, 8:27pm Obviously this guy is a shoe salesman trying to get us to buy jogging shoes from him as a cure. Actually, The Answer, The Question is, can you supply us with a better description of your attacks? Usual length? Why you went and lied back down after you discovered that that made it worse? Just the facts on the headaches. Once every three weeks seems to suggest it isn't a CH. Also, you can take the cluster quiz on the left of the board and that may help you find an answer. |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by The_Answer on Dec 5th, 2002, 8:46pm Shoe salesman? That went over my head.... 0_o If you are referring to my user name, The Answer is Allen Iverson's nick name... guard for the 76ers--I'm a basketball fan--follow?. Is that what you're talking about? ;) Anyway--I can try to offer a better description, but this just happended TODAY. The quizes don't really work, since they all seem to reference general symptoms (which I would accordingly answer with regard to the headaches I have gotten my whole life, which are just normal headaces). This particular headache happened for the first time earlier today. The reason I am here is because, personally, it was FRIGHTENING. The once every 3 week deal was referring to my old headaches. Description: It happened after I slept for about 10 hours--I woke up, and within an hour, I had excruciating pain behind and above my left eye. It was a throbbing pain, and it seemed to get worse if I pressed on the area and released. If I massaged the area viciously, it seemed to help the pain. It lasted for about 2 hours. I went back to lie down because I felt helpless and didn't know what else to do. The pain was an awful, throbbibg sensation. I tried to lower my head to increase blood flow to the area but that seemed to make things worse. |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by domm on Dec 5th, 2002, 8:47pm Get thee to a neurologist (or a doctor who will listen) after you've read thru all the resources available here and on the OUCH website. Good luck and let us know how things work out domm |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by eyes_afire on Dec 5th, 2002, 9:13pm Hi The Answer. Domm's advice is good. I don't think we have enough information to say for sure whether you are developing CH. My advice... stick around, research, and keep track of your headaches. One thing is for sure, if you do have CH, you will be getting many more brutal attacks. Hopefully you don't get any more headaches like that, in which case you can do a happy dance, thank your favorite deity (whether it be god, allah, jesus, odin, zeus, diana, or whoever) and ask that deity to please cure us of these fucking CH. I really hope you don't have CH... it is horrible torment. |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by fubar on Dec 5th, 2002, 10:30pm Hey The_Answer, In all seriousness, I hope you are wrong. You certainly should go see a doctor right away whenever you have alarming new symptoms like that, so that is a good idea. Given the short period for this particular problem, you won't be diagnosed with CH, but they may want to get a picture of your head (mri) or other neurological tests to make sure there isn't something else that needs attention. Be smart, and start a headache diary NOW so you can accurately describe your headaches to any doctor. You need to include an entry for every headache, noting the time it happened, length, pain level, location of pain, description of pain (dull, sharp, throbbing, stabbing, etc), any medications taken during the previous 24 hours or since your last headache, and if you really want to learn a lot, what you ate and drank in the last 24 hours. This info, when in the hands of a doctor, is much more useful than "Gee doctor, I had this really bad one sometime last week, then another one but slightly different yesterday." The headache journal establishes a concrete record that is priceless info for the attending physician. This is the single most important thing you can do in your own search for help. So, 1) go to a doctor 2) keep a headache journal -Fu |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by suzy617 on Dec 6th, 2002, 5:05am Keeping a journal is a good idea Fu. I think after just one attack like this might just be to early to tell what it might be. Hopefully for you it could be just infected sinuses but do the journal thing and see if it starts happening on a regular basis and go see your Dr. Good luck, suzy |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by Stampertje on Dec 6th, 2002, 5:30am Hello The Answer, listen to these people. They are very experienced people with lots of advice. You should defenitely keep a headache journal and go see a doctor. Since you only had one attack it is very difficult to say it is CH (as already said). If you are really curious and somewhat of a pain freak, you can try to provoce (?? Sorry, I'm dutch) an attack. With me sleeping for a long time is a no-no, the same with taking naps during the day. Drinking beer is defenitely followed by an attack. >:( I don't hope an attack will come in your case. And as I said you would have to be crazy to want them to come. I hope you will never have join this club. Let us know how you are doing. The best of luck, Rik |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by echo on Dec 6th, 2002, 7:52am Can't add much to what has already been advised. Read the info on the left to educate yourself on CH. After reading the info and archives you'll unfortunately know more about CH than a large percentage of GMD's. Keeping a headache journal is an excellent way to communicate what you're dealing with to you dr or neuro. |

Title: Re: The Horror, Oh, The Horror Post by Drk^Angel on Dec 6th, 2002, 11:18am Definately see a doctor. It's a good idea to make an appointment to see a doctor anytime you have any new type of head pain, especially when there is no noticeable external cause, and the pain disrupts normal activity. Personally, clusters for me is not a throbbing pain, so it doesn't sound like clusters, but I can't say for sure either way. No matter what the cause though, seeing a doctor may provide you a treatment to deal with them. PFDAN....................................... Drk^Angel |
