Title: Bi-Polar question -- anyone?
Post by echo on Dec 4th, 2002, 10:30am
Are any of you familiar with the begining stages of someone becoming bi-polar?

My wife can go from sweet as the dickens to queen "B", to sweet again within a matter of minutes.  Lately the home life reminds me of a ping pong match.  Anything and nothing can set her off.  Brings up shit from 10 years ago and rehashes it.  She demands help with something, I step in to assist and she takes me off at the knees for daring to imply she can't handle it herself.  I love the women dearly but, holy shit she's driving me crazy!  And for me it's a short trip.

I have been with my wife for 22 years, this week, since we met.  ;D
Yall don't get me wrong, but my experience with women indicates the behavior you mention as perfectly normal, with women. I however......

Not to make light of a serious situation, we really do struggle here at my house with depression. If the behavior you describe is new, you may have a problem. See a doctor, meds for depression are much better than just a few years ago. Not so much a "shotgun" approach with treatment. A more targeted approach is avaliable now. I am a believer in therapy also, but do not confuse a medical, chemical problem with a possible  problem better addressed with therapy, group or individual. Group has been better for me, kinda like here, it's much more difficult to bullshit a bullshitter. ;D
Good luck Echo, we have a lot in common :o

Echo,

How old is your wife?  The mood swings could be hormonal and not pschologically induced if she is close to menopause.

Don't know if that's a better option or not.  :-/

At least it could help you understand the dramatic mood swings better.

Hang in there man, us women can be a handful. LOL

While I don't like to use menopause as an excuse for wacky, irratic behaviour-I have seen people really change during that period. My mother was horrible and I live in fear of being like her.  Others fly throuh unaffected.  I would check into that probablity also...they can do hormone level tests to see where she is.

I've got three words for you... P M S

At least that's what my wife blames it on when she acts that way.  For the love of God, do not... and I repeat... Do not ask her if that's what's wrong... Not if you value your manhood anyways.

Yeah, I would be much more inclined to point to hormonal changes rather than bi-poloar disorder.

If you really want some info on bi-polar, I can get it.  My mom's a retired RN, and she's done TONS of personal research into manic depression.  (We lost a family member to suicide some years ago, bi-polar was strongly suspected.)

PMS can often make a woman rather irritable, and while it *usually* doesn't create SEVERE mood swings, it CAN happen for some.
By all means try to get some help for her.

Thanks for the input, advice and warnings.

To answer one question - my little wife is 43.

Here what I went through lately.  She commented three times within 30 minutes that I needed to quit eating so much, lose weight, quit smoking and excercise more.  I agree with all of these.

At dinner she questioned why I didn't eat much and popped a cork because I didn't eat more.   Holy shit!

Hell... That sound's almost like my wife's normal behaviour... Except with her it's sex that she's complaining about.

PS... If you're really worried about this... Talk to her about it.  Maybe convince her to at least discuss it with her GP, and see what they recommend.

As for your wife shes suffering from Dark Angel Syndrome - it comes on quite quickly, triggers for it include men, marriage and kids, 6 inch rulers and smart alecs!!!!!!

Treatment
Find a well hung man or a very short one
cos you can can hit him over the head with one of the kids without pulling a muscle, and they don't run as fast cos there legs arn't as long.

Well Echo, I think bi-polar disorder manifests itself in more complex ways than a 'jekyl and hyde' personality.  Often the sufferer will have grandiose notions during a manic phase AND act upon them... such as suddenly quitting one's job and/or going on incredibly huge spending sprees, or furiously working on something without ever stopping to sleep.  Then during the depressive phase a deep depression usually results, sometimes totally reversing thier ambitions or un-doing thier manic-phase creations.  Bi-polar disorder can be very destructive because often it interferes with the sufferer's clarity of thought concerning the consequences of thier actions.
Hope that helps answer your question.

eyes_afire hit the bipolar nail rite on the head.....there 'dedicated' to the mood swing there in at the time......keepin busy is what they thrive on and what makes em tick till they cycle out and then it's depression like ya got some sorta deep dark secret.....It's not a deal that comes on quick either.....plus insomnia cycle are part of it also....seem's alot of things go thru cycles. Abrupt subject change: is it ture what they say about a mans shoe size ????????????

Title: Re: Bi-Polar question -- anyone?
Post by Cathi on Dec 5th, 2002, 11:25pm
Cootie- Right on the nose! How many remember when it was called manic depression? Same stuff!!!The highs are HIIIGH, the lows are horrid, and the swing quite subtle- till the bipolar (manic) hits the extreme.
But, Cootie- I thought we were supposed to look at the hands....NOW you tell me I shoulda been looking at the FEET? All these years...........

Title: Re: Bi-Polar question -- anyone?
Post by cootie on Dec 6th, 2002, 8:01am
Yeah I think it's the feet and hands...then ya assume you know the rest !!! And yeah I know they used to call bipolar Manic depressant....I argued with my doc that that was a bad fraze cuz it made you sound CRAZY and out of control. Basically it's yer instincts gone 'arye'.....you suddenly feel very happy with everything....then suddenly extremely depressed as if you just got horrible news....then scared to death panic as if someone tried to push you in fronta a train...for NO reason....we have to much to worry about these days...things have happen'd to us in the past.....there's to many things that none of us can do anything about and things that are out of control around us and we all have natural instincts but some's kick in full bore without real reason or one you can explain at the time. Hmmmmm....I think I'm gonna go hang around a mens shoe store taday verses Xmas shoppin..........

Ok I 've read this this entire thread so far and well.....I really can't resist ......

First of all Ladies.....I WIL NOT brag about my size wheight , length , or short comings. All I have to say on this particular subject is , outside of the hand and foot theory is that if you have to use quantum physics to calculate a man's size you either are impressively frightened or aggressively dissapointed.
So It turns out that the best judge of a man's ummm  ::) "character"  ::) is his attitude towards women.

about the mood swing thing the best two suggestions I've read so far are the "menopause theory" and the "clinical depression" idea. Either way....see a Doctor cause something isn't right.

I have Panic/ anxiety disorder and from time to time experience violent mood swings. Most medication sucks in this department but there are a few that are highly effective, just don't ignore the symptoms. GET the Gal to a Doctor.

I will get flamed by the guys for this next statement.....Women are beautiful in all shapes and sizes I don't give a D**** about the petty bullshit as long as she is a careing nurturing individual who can think for herself.

Here's the lastest:
A: It's getting worse!
B: I've discussed this with her Dr. (caught her outside the office at the Mall) Dr will be sending her a reminder note for her annual mamogram, or brain squish.  She will also take a blood sample for testing of all posibilities.
C: Dr edges towards premenopause or severe masked depression.  (keeping it secret - not wanting to show her ailment or weakness to cope)

Echo - first off let me say that you are a very nice man to even consider trying to find out if there was something medically wrong (shhhh I won't tell anyone how nice you're being) instead of just assuming she was in a "bitchy mood."

Glad to hear that you were able to get the doc aside and give a head's up......if everything comes back fine on her bloodwork and no hormone replacement therapy is issued for her - there is a vitamin on the market that helps women with their mood swings - it's called Optivite.  You can take up to like 6 pills per day.  There was a time when PMS almost got the best of me and I almost ripped my dishwasher out from underneath the kitchen counter....these worked well for me.  It's over the counter and was even told by my GYN to get some......just a suggestion of something that might help you out....

Good luck to you Echo - brighter days are sure to come your way.........

I’ve been with 2 ladies with bi-polar (they are very attracted to clusterheads). Major swings in sex drive. During the up phase, sex 4 times a day. During the down phase, “don’t fucking touch me”. The down phase also induced the “I’m not getting out of the bed for 24 hrs” syndrome. Without accurate diagnosis it’s very hard for them to hold onto a job, causing more depression.

Living in the land of silicone, and believe me, everything you’ve heard about it, is true, it’s everywhere, I find that some men are gravitating towards smaller breasted women because they know that they are natural, and will move when caressed (there’s not a big business in breast reduction out here). As far as male measurements go, switch to the metric scale.

During our marriage my wife and I have gone from everywhere sex to hall sex.

1st year - everywhere, inside, outside any room any time.
2nd - 4th year - all bedroom, all the time, any time.
4th - 6th year - scheduled bedroom.  same time same way same day weeky at first moved to monthly.
Now -  with all that has been going on she has hall sex with me.  Whenever she passes me in the hall way she says - "Fuck You"!

I love that joke.  The variation on it is that now we only have hallway anal sex.  We pass each other and say, "Fuck you not a very nice person."

As far as the whole issue goes, my lovely wife is 41 (42 in February) and this sounds incredibly familiar.  I've got to vote with the majority on the "changes" and "hormones" concepts.  My wife has been taking Sarafem (its Prozac dressed in pink and purple for ladies) and it's really made a huge difference.  If you can tie it to hormones, the OB-GYN will usually be willing to prescribe so you don't have to deal with a psych.

That's my two cents.

Good luck.  Oh, and if the head spins around 360 degrees, get your ass out of there.
