Title: Another pain lesson learned
Post by SommelierCH on Nov 29th, 2002, 6:48pm
Sometimes I just space out on the obvious. I went to a Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and everybody brought a different dish. (of course, being a sommelier, I was asked to bring the wine, [Let’s see, the price of a “Three bean salad” compared to multiple bottles of wine….?] and during my cycle I can’t even frigging DRINK!!) The first course was a very nice carrot/chestnut soup, since I’ve been in the restaurant business for 27 years, I’m pretty good at guessing the ingredients in different dishes. I asked the lady who brought the dish if she used cinnanmin? Yes, a little allspice?, Yes, white pepper? No, hmmm there’s a little heat in this…Perhaps you’re picking up the Ginger, Yea, that’s it. Then she says when I’m almost finished, “I also added Sherry”. AAUUGHHH! Sherry? Yes, but alcohol always cooks off. WRONG!!  She would have had to scorch the soup to get all the alcohol out. I, of course, didn’t have my huge O2 tank with me, so I popped some OTC analgesics and waited. Sure enough, the shadows started creeping in. I coped pretty well, nothing over a Kip5, but I learned another lesson. During a cycle make sure that you ask about the ingredients of every dish, just as if you had a deadly allergy, AND that alcohol doesn’t just “cook off”.

Pace,
David J.

David, are you sure it was the thimble full of sherry that was in your share of the soup? Something called "allspice" must for sure contain lots of MSG (taste enhancer). Are you certain you're immune against this nerve poison? Any soup (most are laced generously with MSG) would send me through the roof.

Hey does MSG cause the jitters real bad and sinus HA's....wasn't MSG's used as a presevative for salad buffet's and stuff also years ago and it was banned for use that way.....I been gettin bad cases of the jitters and naggy sinus HA's all day long....I went back to soup at lunch time tho.....I know it's in Chinese food....(I'm a CH supporter) We have soup and sandwich ever so often fer dinner....I mite wanna cool it with that........

It's called ground allspice but it beats me what it is.  It's in everything Swedish cooks make. I haven't had much of the stuff since mom died and the same goes for my CH.  It's almost certainly a co-incidence. After all, I don't pay much attention to the MSG content of my food and no doubt I get plenty. Don't ya think?

Hey, Jonny- so is it Campbell's chicken noodle, or nuthin' for ya?

Re: allspice- the only thing found in allspice is...allspice. It is a berry from what is generally referred to in North America, as the pimiento plant. The berry has an aroma similar to cinnamon, the berry resembles clove but it has a mild, fiery bite to it.....but no MSG
