Mark, it already happens here.  I helped put Kevin Mitnick behind bars, and that case is a wonderful example of how far our government will go, openly and vigorously violating civil rights in order to send a chilling message to those who would dare break the law.  Kevin was the first US citizen in history to be held for almost 5 years without so much as a bail hearing.  Hell, they even kept him in solitary for 8 months because they believed he ‘could launch a nuclear missile by whistling into a phone’.

Now, I don’t have any problem with putting a criminal behind bars.  Kevin was a criminal.  However, there is a wonderful thing here called due process, and even though I was a huge victim of Kevin, I wasn’t about to stand by and watch this display of unchecked power.  Anybody who thinks the ends justify the means is dead wrong and deserves to live in China, not here.  In the end, I helped him get out and we are now pretty good friends.  Ironic.

Sure, it wasn't an execution, but that's not my point.  It's about unchecked and uncontrolled abuse of power (while 98% of the populace sits by saying "well, i suppose in this case it's OK because..." fucking idiots)

You have no idea how disconcerting it was to be subpoenaed by both the FBI *and* the defense in Mitnick’s case.  It was the whole “Free Kevin” movement that frightened me.  I assumed many of them would fail to see that I actually helped Kevin, and would launch attacks in my direction simply for being named as a prosecution witness.  Thank GOD the trial was avoided by plea agreement!

The whole idea of the Homeland Security Dept scares the hell out of me.

But........look at this. It doesn't appear that too many people really give a crap anyway.

Yer right.

Never have I seen a bigger waste of time than the Homeland Security Dept.  It's too big, too expensive, entirely unnecessary, stupid, a nice way to hide money, something no Republican should put up with because of their anti "Big Government" history, and fucking dangerous.

This thing pretty much exists anyway and I like that the CIA, NSA, & FBI don't get along and are too clumsy to track us down most of the time.

All these bastards do now it stick you on an Army base and not officially charge you with anything. They tell us this doesn't violate due-process. Bullshit. Despots always say shit like this.

Time to start our own militia.

Great links Mark.

I, for one don't want our government or ANY government involved with the internet in any way, shape, or form.

Once and bureaucrat is allowed to stick his/her nose into anything it isn't long before it is controlled, taxed or outlawed.

Like I said before, the Homeland Security Dept. scares the hell out of me. I have great fear of the the world my grandchildren will live in in just a decade or two.

This is a very interesting thread and I feel I just gotta say something.

Freedom is relative...plain and simple. Those of you who believe you are truly free are snowing yourselves. One man's freedom is anothers prison. All you have to do is take out a history book (pick a grade level it makes no difference) and read a few chapters. Fact is that, what is printed in those books are simply what your government wants you to believe, many important facts and incidents are "left out" because they would change the truth if we knew.
the Homeland security thing, since the 9-11 attacks are a good example here. how many times have you heard directly on your preferred news channel that we were not being told the whole story to protect "intelligence" my question here is this....when have you ever known the government of any country including ours to be totaly forthcoming and outright on everything. Hell its been almost 40 years since the Kennedy assasination and we still don't know all the details. why? because there is something the government really doesnt want us to know.
NOW....I DO NOT agree with many of the dealings going on in China and I admit a many violation of human rights have and will occur. But to think you are free as an American? I beg to differ.

I know what you mean and agree with you for the most part. World War II put the final nail in the coffin. Ever since then and even since WWI, our government has been able to keep pretty close tabs on us and what we're up to.  When it really needed to.

It isn't a revelation that our news is pretty thin here.  Reading some foreign papers is a revelation when you first encounter them. They aren't full of all the "scare the shit out of families" crap like ours. There is a lot less emphasis on feel-good stuff and family values junk.

The Kennedy assassination is where we part our ways. It will never cease being controversial of course. It was messy and the assassin was taken out.  My money is on that anything iffy about the thing would bore my ass off.  We tend to look for conspiracies, other gunmen, and Hollywood stuff because it's great theater. Occam's Razor explanations are no fun.

We’re so fuckin' smart, it’s sickening.  ;D

Wonder what Svenn says? He hasn't mentioned it....

I like the way it's done here so far. Everything new is smoke free and we have a form of creeping smoke-free areas.

It's one reason I was successful. It's so much easier.

It's probably enforceable in Norway. Here it would be a bloodbath.

Super Kraut was what many called him kids. Henry is baaaaack.......I lifted most of this but you guys know me. I love this stuff :o

Who better to investigate an unwarranted attack on America than the man who played Iago to Richard Nixon, telling him he'd be "a weakling" if he did not prosecute newspapers running the Pentagon Papers, and wiretapping journalists? It‘s safe to investigate 9/11 now, secure in the knowledge that Mr. Kissinger has never shed light on a single dark corner, or failed to flatter a boss.

If you want to get to the bottom of something, you don't appoint Henry Kissinger. If you want to keep others from getting to the bottom of something, you appoint Henry Kissinger. Bush and Cheney are in tune with Mr. Kissinger's principles: that the greatest enemy of the U.S. is the U.S. media.

George never disappoints.  ::)
