Title: Yup Mast, I locked him in the car
Post by catlind on Nov 6th, 2002, 6:39am
This isn't CH related other than the fact that it brought on one hell of a headache after all was done LOL

I had gone into the store to pick up a few things and when I got back to the car Ayden was being his 100% 2 year 100% boy devil child and he opened the front passenger door and I was trying to stop him from running out to the lanes in the parking lot and not let him hit the vehicle beside us with the door, so I threw my purse and bags into the front seat and had my keys in my hand.

I finally wrestled him into the car seat.

Now my car is a 2002 Jetta with an electronic lock and security system.  I have a wrist strap on the keys for when I put him in the car seat, but as cat luck would have it, I didn't have it on my wrist because I was too busy trying to get him and all the bags in the car.  While I was trying to get him strapped in, he started grabbing the keys....I finally got them away and just tossed them over the seat to the front seat and closed his door.

Now the security system in a 2002 Jetta, won't allow you to electronically lock or unlock the doors while the DRIVERS door is open, but it doesn't work if any other door is open.

So I close his door, walk around to the drivers door and see it's locked and the security light is flashing.

My purse, my money, my keys, my CAA, my volkswagen roadside assist, and my cell phone are all locked in my car along with my 2 year old.  I'm standing in the snow/rain mix with no coat thinking "Oh fuck, what do I do now!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I flagged down a soldier walking by with a "ummm Sir, could you help me please!"  (I was on a military base).
I was parked aways out from the store so I couldn't even leave the car to call someone.  So he asked if I had another set of keys, and I said yes, but they are at my house 13 miles away and the housekey is locked in the car.  He sent someone to call the MP's (military police) to see if they could unlock it.

Well, that's when the circus started.  Because there was a child locked in the car it became a rescue emergency.  So one unmarked MP car, 2 regular cop cars sirens and lights going, and the fire rescue truck and a regular fire truck all show up lights and sirens going full blast.

I about died from embarassment from being in the predicament and having an "emergency rescue" have to happen.

Because of the security system even though they got the wedge and slim jim in and were pushing on the unlock button it wouldn't open.  Of course, the child lock is set on the door that Ayden is beside and it isn't just a little switch, you have to use the key to turn it on or off.
So they couldn't even just flip the switch to turn off the child lock.

After 30 min. of 7 firemen and 5 police trying to get into my car, and them asking me repeatedly "are you sure that's the right button" hehe, I walked over to the passenger side and was able to see where they had this slim jim thinging and said pull the handle, the doors unlock if you open them from the inside, it will set off the alarm but I can get to the keys and turn it off quick enough.  So it took a bit of maneuvering but we finally got it unlocked.  Ayden of course thought it was great fun because he loves firetrucks and lights....ugh.

So after filling out all the paperwork and then showing all my ID because when they asked of course I had to tell them it was locked in the car, I was able to drive home freezing cold and dying from embarassment!

And now you know the rest of the story...

Great story. But, I see 2 big mistakes.

Mistake #1.........you bought a Volkswagen.

Mistake #2........you didn't junk the Volkswagen.

Glad everything turned out ok, in a funny sort of way.

Now go buy a real car.

Nice story Cat.  Having been an MP myself I can relate to amount of support you received.  Hey -- we have something to do that moderately resembles police work.

Bob -  what's the deal with dumping on VW's.  I drive a classic bug daily.  It's kind of like driving a go-cart supercharged with Flintstone vitimans.

I agree, Echo - I went to my highschool grad in a VW bug.  An orange one.

We did donuts in the park in that bug!!   Ok, so it sounded like a sewing machine on prednisone, but it was a lotta fun!!

echo...........you drive a Vdub daily and have to ask why I dump on them?  :D

They're more like a shopping-cart on prune juice.
They're ugly, noisey, cramped, under-powered, cold in the winter and hot in the summer, leak oil and slow.
There is no such thing as a classic VW. That's just a phrase made up by VW drivers to justify haveing an old junker. ;D

But, to be fair, VW's are not the worst cars on the road. There are still some Gremlins, Vegas and Yugos out there. ;)

Hey Bob, don't forget those glass coffins - The Pacer   ::)

My mom had a gremlin for a few years - my first driving years, actually.  I had that thing out on the highway when I was about 17 and hit a patch of black ice.  Man, could those suckers spin!!  I think I did a few 360°'s before i finally landed in the ditch!  That was fun.

Ok Bob,  now it's getting personal.   :'(

Has no one ever explained to you the fact that a Classic VW Bug is a chick magnet? ;D
Really - the only reason I drive one is to keep the daily mileage off the Suburban.  In 3 years I have yet to receive as much as a door ding on that bug.  Everyone wanted to bang the crap out of the Burban doors.  Must agree the little dude is cold in the winter, defroster sucks, and it is slow, and you need to adjust the valve clearance every 2500 miles.

Catlind- please don't feel bad- I dropped my gorgeous firstborn on her head- I brought her home from the hospital, went to place her on the changing table, she slipped out of my hands, landed upside down, between her crib & the table!  Now, 27 yrs. later, I think she's okay......
WHAT WE PARENTS DO TO OUR KIDS!!!
Never locked a kid in my car, but did manage to lock MYSELF in it.......no mp's or police around, alarm going off- quiet resid. neighborhood...
Now, Echo- Here's the plan, we take the bug (what year?), pop it into the back of my jeep- and we'll do a cross- country tour!!
Hope you're BOTH PF today...and the next..well, you get it!

Suburban!!! Now you're talkin'.
Big, powerful, comfortable, Big and American made.
Only thing that can put a ding in a Suburban is another Suburban.

I drive a '92 Chevy S-10 that is a little rough. It's a truck that's been used like a truck and looks like a truck. When I go to Home Depot I just love to park next to some sissified yuppie Beemer (I know the fruity owner is probably in the gardening department or picking out that "oh-so-special" wallpaper) or uppity Caddy Escalade.

I'm careful not to ding others cars. I just like the expression on their face when they see a beater parked next to their fat ego trip.  :o

My next car might be a Hummer so I can park it over the top of VW's. Then watch the owner panic because he can't find his car. ::)

Bob -- I'll remember the hummer trick if I can't  find my 74 bug in the parking lot.  Must admit that a semi grill in the rear view mirror on the freeway is a little disconserting.

X-country?  ROAD TRIP!!! ;D  Looking forward to it puddin.

Cathi,

How does one lock oneself in a car?

Ya know what those little things are that stick up by the door window?  Pull it up and it unlocks the door.

Bob P-
TALENT!! First prerequisite! Actually, therein lies the rub, So, since you asked- power door locks did me in- I started to exit the car, accidentally hit the lock button, then opened the door-uh, somehow, this is going south already- door opened, alarm went off....oh, yeah, keys were still in the ignition.....don't ask how I did it- I just know I'll never do it again.......somehow ::) Let's get back to Catlind, shall we??
In Slammy's absence I must say....
This one's done, stick a fork in it.....................

Echo- I have a curfew.......

Cathi has a curfew -- it's going to be a short road trip.

Cough it up Cat.  How did you use the I beam to accessorize your burban?

Cat, that was a great story. So glad your little boy found it amusing, would have been alot worse if he decided to freak out. I never locked my kids in my car but once I tried to lock my husband in the attic trunk, too bad he didnt fit.  Oh well, guess thats why he's my ex husband now   ;D

As for my hubby's Jetta, it is anything but gutless, 1.8 litre turbo injected.  Drives like a dream, and LOVES to go fast.  Handles great in the snow, and the absolutely best feature is that it has seat warmers  ;D

Now my vehicle, a Mazda MPV is your basic family minivan with no bells and whistles and gets me where I wanna go :)   And I CAN'T LOCK MY KID IN IT!!!!! LOL

2Late, I love that idea, but somehow I don't think they want a 2 year old in Bosnia hehe.

As for the I beam story, not only did it 'dent' it, we also managed to tear the drivers side mirror off with a sign post....I was with a friend of mine, it was her dad's suburban, and he was out of town, and we were out drinking and having a good time.....need I explain anymore? LOL

Glad I'm not young and stupid anymore,   although being middle age and stupid isn't much better ;)

Well, picture two Cathy's, both slightly intoxicated, out in the boonies, at her fathers marina.  (Hence the presence of the I Beam - it and another one held up the sign).  The Burb was parked and we decided we had the munchies.  So we figured what the hell, we'd borrow the Burb and head into town and get some munchies.  Can't remember exactly how the damn thing was parked, but somehow she hit reverse, and hit the I-Beam with back quarter panel, after a few swear words, she put it in drive and drove straight into the other I-Beam...more swear words, we got out (very dark in the boonies) looked it over and saw no damage through our vodka eyes.  Got in and drove into town.  Somehow, and neither of us remembers exactly how, on our way back out of town on the one way street, she was driving a little close to the curb, of course, vodka eyes don't see things in the proper perspective.  I thought I heard a crunch, but figured we ran over a pop can.  The next morning, after a few tylenol we went out to survey the damage. OY VEY.   I-Beams do major damage....
and as near as we can figure, the crunch we heard was when she was driving too close to the curb and the sign post that was there tore off the drivers side mirror.

The hard part was coming up with an excuse that her dad would buy as to how we totalled his suburban when we weren't actually supposed to be driving it.

Think we blamed it on her brother, said he needed the Burb out of the way because he was going to put his camaro in the shop to work on it.....and it was rainy and muddy and slippery....

It didn't work, at least not all the way, but we only got restricted from seeing each other for a month and she only got grounded for 2 weeks of which she had to work the marina to pay for the repairs.

That's about the best I can remember of it....it was dark, and I was drunk hehe.

So, don't drive suburbans between I-beams, and when the mirror says items may be closer than they appear, they mean it ;)

Wasn't it fun to be young & dumb? Isn't it wonderful when we can honestly say "I'm grown up now- I do grown-up-stupid-stuff!"
Thanks for the story-
