Title: tegretol
Post by ist on Oct 12th, 2002, 8:54am
I have been prescribed Tegretol.  Has anyone used this for cluster headache.  I am getting some blister like on my nose and below the tear duct on cheek.  Has anyone had this?
I am a new cluster head.  It started by me having a very red eye and felt that I had something in my eye.  That evening, my head started to hurt and I had sharp pains shooting into my eye.  This went on for about 3 days and the pain got worse.  My head was throbbing and the headache was like a contractal type and only on one side starting from my temple and took a 45 degree turn to the centre of my forehead.  As it passed different areas of my head the pain was different in all areas.  It went from throbbing to shooting to feeling like I had something too cold .  On the fourth day, my eye started to water.  I went to the eye doctor and he suspected a cluster headache.  I had a CT scan and there are no signs of tumor.  I was than prescribed Tergertol.  I live in Africa and there are very few specialists here.  One doctor says it may be trigeminal neuralgia and  some say it is a cluster headache. Please can someone help me to tell me if they have diagnosed me correctley and if I have a cluster headache?

ist,

Sorry you are suffering.
Have you taken the "cluster quiz".....4th button on the left.  If not please take it and let us know the results.

Jackie

I believe trigeminal neuralgia and Cluster Headaches are the same thing.
Sounds to me like you already have a concurring second opinion.
Hope you get help.

Please, Anvil !

I don't care what you believe in, but this site is about cluster headaches, not faith nor trigeminal neuralgia.
Let's stay to facts.
And fact is that CH and TN are two completely different diseases, having in common only that both are in the head.
It is this careless mixing up of facts that brings about the wrong treatment, and consequently years of needless pain for both sufferers of CH and TN.

Sorry! Huge misperception on my part.
Will not happen again. I am not a doctor.
That was dumb.
I misunderstood a list of afflictions on another site as being the previous names for Cluster Headaches.
They are not the same.

Dear ist,

if you have cluster headaches, tegretol won't help. They gave it to me, because they believed I had Trig. Neuralgia, and it didn't help against the pain, just made me very woozy for months on end.

So if it helps, you very probably don't have clusters. But by all means take the cluster quiz.
If it turns out you don't have clusters, this message board can not help you and the information may cause you to suffer needlessly.

(sorry - normally, all this quoting pisses me off too, but ...)

AnneMarie - THESE words of yours should be made into their own button on the left.  That's SO the point to that  other thread that has gone on, ad nauseum!

Incorrect diagnoses can lead to dangerous presciption meds and just add to the frustration in finding relief for pain that is something other than cluster.

That sound you just heard was me, stepping DOWN off my soapbox.

DJ - we HAVE a winner!!
