Title: Excedrin Migraine Question
Post by Big_Dan on Sep 30th, 2002, 10:53am
About the third year into my CHs... I was taking 7 to 8 Excedrin Migraine during my cycle, and after seeing my Neuro, he told me that doing that they were triggering my clusters...

Has anyone else been told that about E. Migraine or any other OTC pain killers?....

Dan,

The simple is answer is NO.  Spend some more time reading here - most of us have tried the OTC stuff, sometimes enough to cause liver damage.  Check out the more viable medications and treatments.

Time to find a new doctor, or you are going to have to educate yours.

Dan,

Any analgesic, excedrin, anacin, asprin, etc. can cause rebound headaches if you take them too often.

Rebound headaches are different than cluster headaches though.  More of a tension type headache (dull constant ache).

OTC pain killers will of course do absolutly nothing for a cluster headache so I'm wondering shy you are taking them.

Yeah.. he told me that they were "rebound headaches"... and I was taking them because it seemed to help with the shadows... at least that's what I thought.  :-/

I haven't used any since 2000 though...

Dan,

My doc suggsted I try these too.  Did nothing, of course, but they are loaded with caffeine....  When you're coming down off the caffeine "high" it often triggers headaches - not CH's, but with a clusterhead, it might just do that and certainly does nothing to relieve the pain.  Ditch them or give 'em to a meegrainer and see a neuro about drugs that do work.  There is a plethora of information on this site and OUCH about what drugs we use that are effective - right now, I'm having success with verapamil and catapres... Good luck  - Jim R

"plethora" - big words too, I like it ;D ;D

Dan - Verapamil for a preventative, O2 and Imitrex as abortives. These are not pain killers, they are dragon, beasty slayers. OTCs never worked for me either.
good luck and PF days to all

I get so mad at the marketing scam of excedrin.  I looked at the ingrediats label and mg of stuff.  Excedrin and excedrin migraine are the exact same stuff just bottled differently.  The only difference is where I shop they charge 50 cents more for the migraine excedrine.  What a rip off and a joke.

Regardless of other problems, OTC painkillers are useless for clusters. You need some advice from a doctor who has an inkling what CH is all about.
