Title: Virapamil users Post by Danny_P on Sep 25th, 2002, 1:58pm :'(I have had good sucsess for about one year in preventing CH from occuring, but lately they have returned. I'm on 480 mg of Virapamil, but the occurences are coming back to 2-3 per day. Anyone else been here, and if so, what other treatment did you turn to. |

Title: Re: Virapamil users Post by Jasmyn on Sep 25th, 2002, 2:56pm Danny, I had the same experience. Last year verapamil worked for me but this year it just didn't do the trick. ??? I had no doc here, so by accident when I had a very bad patch, I went to the Farmacia here in Maputo and with alot of braille and sign language that eventually became quite offensive, we agreed that I need something for a headache. ::) Well, I got a thing called migretil. It contains ergotamine, caffeine, belladonna and paracetamol. I still don't know what in this combination is the one that works with the verapamil. I started to drink my usual 240mg verapamil plus 2 of these migretils together, even if the warning says not to mix the two. :o I'm only shadowing but no full blown attack and the only side effects are heart pulpitations and extreme tiredness. But please consult a doc before trying this! I have an excuse to overdose because my portuguese may just get me arrested here and I don't want to land in jail with CH. (I can do without the food and water but not my meds!) 8) |

Title: Re: Virapamil users Post by Jim R on Sep 25th, 2002, 3:52pm Danny, Had a long remission on 280 verapamil, then last year they cam eback. Now on 480 mg. and in combination with catapres (clonodine) and am having wonderful success of late (no CH [only slight shadows] for over 10 days!)! ;D The docs explained it to me that one's body can get used to any drug and then of course it becomes less effective. Maybe you need to bump up - there are many people here on 720 mg of verap and I believe you can even go to 920 or so.... Good luck and best wishes for PFDAN's - Jim R |

Title: Re: Virapamil users Post by Danny_P on Sep 27th, 2002, 9:52am jonny, Thanks for the feedback. I have been cursed since 1994, and at 54yrs old, I was looking for them to go away by themselves. Most info I read is they generally go away in the 50's. I am talking with my doc about the combo of verap and lithium . Can you tell me the mg's of each that works for you. Any side affects? |

Title: Re: Virapamil users Post by jonny on Sep 27th, 2002, 12:57pm STFU Echo....LOL ;D Danny, Lithium 300mgs twice aday Verapamil 240mgs twice a day Sideffects for me are slight hand tremors and short term memory loss (I swear this has nothing to do with all the beer I drink.....LOL, ya right!) I started out chronic in 1976 and im 40 yrs old, it wasnt till about 11-12 yrs ago I found the Verap, Lith combo and boy what a difference it made. This combo keeps 80% of the HA's from ever coming, the rest I kill with Imitrex or 02. Although this is the best known (Dont work for all) combo for chronics my Neuro says some episodics find it works for them to. Hope this helps, Bro ........................jonny |

Title: Re: Virapamil users Post by simplevox on Sep 27th, 2002, 1:11pm i was taking 120 mg of verapamil a day which kept me in remission for over a year, but then they came back on sept 1st. i am in my second round of prednisone this month and my neurologist bumped up my verapamil to 240 a day. i have had shadows all week, but no full blown CH since sunday night. i guess i will just have to wait and see if they come back again after the steroid treatment is over on monday. maybe the double dose of verapamil will have kicked in by then. if it dosn't work, then my doc says she will put me on antiseizure medicine (depakote) also in combo with the verapamil. i don't want to take it... i've been on it before and it makes me super tired. keep your fingers crossed for me...i definitley think it's worth trying an increased dose. |
