Title: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 11:31am it's worth a try I guess. They are doing the clinical trials of capsaicin in nasal spray for cluster headaches. I saw in the drugstore an arthritis pain reliever that has that as it's main ingredient. I'm not getting anywhere with the medical community, so I figure what the hell, I'm gonna try using the capsaicin analgesic cream on my head when a headache hits. I know it's off the wall and far fetched and really reaching...but one never knows until one tries! Cat (feel free to send the men in white coats) |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 11:34am HOLY SHIT THAT BURNS. Well that got my attention...geeez that shit burns on the skin! Here's hoping it works LOL Says you have to use it for 3-4 times daily for 1-2 weeks before you will get relief from arthritis pain, so we'll see how badly I've fried my temple in a week LOL Cat |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Ted on Sep 21st, 2002, 11:44am Hey Cat. There's 2 different strengths for the the arthritis cream. It's the stronger of the two you should be using. That burning will decrease each day and hopefully the CHs will too. Good luck. |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 12:03pm Ted, the one I have is 0.075% is that the stronger of them? That was the only strength I saw. I take it this has been tried before? hehe. Guess I should search the archives before I try something crazy LOL ;) Cat |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by oringkid on Sep 21st, 2002, 12:05pm I am not gonna look this up, I am just gonna ask! LOL Can you put that cream in your nose? Or does it say not to? Sherry |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by NancyMcFree on Sep 21st, 2002, 12:43pm I say don't read the directions, don't do a query on the old archives ... just snort the stuff and see if it works !!!!!!!! Relief might be right around the corner !!!!!! Good luck Cat !!!!! |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Night_Owl on Sep 21st, 2002, 12:46pm lol! I used to put mineral ice on my head. It felt good, took my attention off of my head. Good luck! Night_Owl |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 12:49pm Sherry it says for external use only it burned like hell on my temple so I don't know if I'd wanna put it up my nose! LOL It says do not use: on wounds, damaged, broken or irritated skin; with a heating pad (may cause blisters); When using this product: avoide contact with the eyes; do not bandage tightly; avoid inhaling dried residue material from the application site which may cause sneezing, nasal irritation or tearing. So there ya have it...if yer usin it for arthritis those are the do's and don'ts. I figure I'm going to throw caution to the wind and try anything I can think of within the realm of rational treatments for CH. I don't want to be on narcotics and pain meds for the rest of my life, and if this works, hell, it's cheap and easy ;) Cat |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by don on Sep 21st, 2002, 1:05pm Put that in your nasal cavaty and you just compounded your pain as well as being on the way to burning the tissues in your nasal and sinus cavaties. |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 1:08pm Have you tried that Don? (I'm not being sarcastic, I haven't waded through all the hits I got on my search yet). It burns like a mother on the skin that much I know. It's still burning nearly 2 hours later. Of course the headache I was getting is gone, but I know it isn't from the cream as my noontime witching hour is generally a short lived low kip CH. If nothing else, the burning pain will distract the same way the ice does LOL Cat |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by oringkid on Sep 21st, 2002, 1:38pm Hey, I have put Tabasco up my nose, and will continue to do it until I find something better. The burning is a good distraction if nothing else, and it did abort a few of my ch's. I tell ya Cat, I'm gonna get some. If nothing else, maybe it will help my neck and my knees. Please tell me it doesn't smell like wintergreen! Sherry |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 2:33pm LOL Sherry, no it doesn't have any smell at all which is a definite bonus. I bought the generic Rite Aid brand, but the name brand one is called Capzacin I think. Just find a drugstore and find the arthritis creams and look for one with the capsaicin in it. I sure got my attention. And just for Slammy's entertainment...if you put it on your temple....don't rub your temple then pick your nose ;) ROFL Cat |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Joyce on Sep 21st, 2002, 4:11pm Tried the cream (Zostrix) last year for about eight weeks. I persisted that long in the hopes that relief would eventually come. It didn't. Quit using it as it didn't do a thing for me. Hope you can get some relief from it. |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Jasmyn on Sep 21st, 2002, 4:20pm Where's the good old days, before being diagnosed, when we sniffed bakingsoda or salt?! Relieving one pain with another!! LOL |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 4:26pm Joyce, how many times a day did you put it on? Blah...here I was hoping hard that it would work. Think we can use the placebo affect and not get anymore CH's? hehe Cat |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Ted on Sep 21st, 2002, 5:14pm Cat, you obviously didn't do a full search of the old board plugging in the words "someone piss up my nostril, this burns!" ;-) I don't remember the strength of it now. It was a few years ago I used it. And yup, right in the nostril. Also tried it on all areas where it usually hurts (other than the eye, of course). One of those ways helped for a couple of weeks and the other way didn't do anything. How's that for help? |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by don on Sep 21st, 2002, 5:15pm I've put a lot of stuff of my nose Cat but hot pepper isn't one of them. |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 21st, 2002, 5:37pm LOL Ted and Don Well, it seems the verdict is likely to be that it isn't effective. Ah well, I can try :) And I'm willing to try just about anything I can that won't give me a heart attack or make me loopy...I'm loopy enough ;) I did find a few things on the search. One was an article done at a university, and I think the gist of it was that is dangerous because it will cause neuron damage. Not sure, I need a neurobiologist to interpret it to Challenged/Confused Cat language hehe Cat p.s. If you try this and have pets don't let them lick your head....the puppy is still outside going nuts LOL |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Charlie on Sep 21st, 2002, 10:13pm It burns? Don't do dat den Charlie |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 22nd, 2002, 9:11am LOL Charlie Yes it burns....great distraction for the beast, but alas no benefit based on searches and input. Doctor it hurts when I do this....Don't do that. LOL I'll take your advice I think ;) Cat |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 22nd, 2002, 12:02pm Okay since I'm already off the wall, I might as well go out on a limb ;) It was suggested to me that if I used the cream on my feet rather than my head, it might be more effective. So I did some searching on the net and found the reflexology sites and the big toe is the site for pituitary, head and such. I also search the board and OUCH, and only got 2 hits so I don't know if it's been addressed or not. Anyway, I rubbed the cream over both my big toes. Can't say it is helping the headaches yet, but it doesn't burn as much on the toes as on the temple LOL. The only thing I can say is that all I can smell is hot peppers. Dunno if that means it's effective on the toes based on reflexology or not. Has anyone looked into the reflexology part of things? Cat |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Ted on Sep 22nd, 2002, 12:13pm Yeah. reflexology has a lot of merit to it, actually. I use it sometimes for shadows with so-so results. It's not very helpful during a full-fledged attack for me though. If you give a hard massage to the same corresponding spot between your thumb and index finger it'll have the same results. This works better for regular headaches than CHs though. Capsaicin works because of the release of Substance P in the region it's applied to. My guess, which is all this is, is that using it on your feet won't do much good unless you also have sore feet. |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by catlind on Sep 22nd, 2002, 1:08pm Ted thanks for the info. I dunno if the capsaicin can be transmitted via the reflexology route or not. I do know reflexology has merit because I had a friend that does it give me a foot massage when I was pregnant, she showed me the spot on the ankle where the uterus is affected. To prove to me she was on the level she gently massaged and I almost immediately started having contractions. Ted, I must admit that I don't know how to search the old board. I search the new one and OUCH but don't know how to get to the old board. I'm sure there's instructions somewhere that I didn't remember in my initial reading of this site, but if you would tell me how to get to the old board I'd very much appreciate it :) Cat p.s. I tend to agree with you about it not being effective for clusters, but I don't think it can hurt, and it's worth a try if it helps even a little - that will mean less pain meds that don't do anything other than take the edge off. |
||
Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Ted on Sep 22nd, 2002, 1:30pm Yeah. I worked in an ashram for a few years and had it done a number of times. Never had it relate to pregnancy though. That's another form of touching. :-) To search the old board you have to go to the archives and hit any date before February 2002 when the new board started. This'll take you to the old board and you can use the search from there. I hope the capsaicin and/or reflexology works well for you, even if just to take the edge off. |

Title: Ted and catlind Post by BobG on Sep 23rd, 2002, 7:56pm To search the 'old' board use the SEARCH button near the top,upper right, of the page. It's the one under the 'he' in the words clusterheadaches.com. It will take you to the 'old' search page. The Search button under the words Message Board will only get you to the "new" search page. |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Ted on Sep 23rd, 2002, 9:09pm Thanks Bob. That seems much easier. When I make coffee I put the water on to boil, sharpen all the pencils in my house, spin three times chanting "lizards are food," touch my nose to a cabinet and when the water boils I pour it into the coffee filter sitting in my broken percolator. Any of the steps here seem extraneous too and able to be eliminated, or was that just my search steps? |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by BobG on Sep 23rd, 2002, 10:04pm You have a percolator? How f*^kin' old are you? My Grandma had one of those. Kept her teeth in it. |

Title: Re: Off the wall, but hey... Post by Marshall_D on Sep 24th, 2002, 12:43pm I remember an article, back in very early 90's. National Enguirer, (Just goes to show that the paper knows it's stuff) went something like "Hot Peppers for Cluster Attacks" Reports that Capsaicin, when sniffed can abort the tremendous pain of a Cluster Attack. (Noticed they didn't call them head-aches back then, but ATTACKS). I went on to ask my doctor about this, and his exact words were, "Man, that's gotta hurt worse then any Headache". So, I still haven't tried it. But if anybody has any success with it, please let us know. I'm still too chicken to try it 10 years later. |
