Title: Are you new to 02? Post by jonny on Sep 5th, 2002, 7:40pm Here's a few tip's. 1. The strap that holds the mask on your face........CUT IT OFF!!!, you fall asleep with it going your dead. 2. Once you cut that off it will be tougher to hang your mask on the regulator, the one thing you dont want to do is kink the air tube where it meets the mask........when that cracks and leaks your fucked. 3. Buy a spare mask, if #2 happens you will wish you had. 4. Use a water bubbler (its like a bong) it will keep the harshness of the 02 down on your throat and filter out some impurities if there are any. 5. I cant say this loud enough, DONT LITE A FUCKING MATCH WHILE USING 02!!!!!........02 does not ignite, what it does is saturat....Hmmmm, lets say your clothes and when you lite up so does your clothes. 6. You may want to start out at a high lpm when first on but back it down to where the bag is filled when your done exhailing, anything else is a waist. Anyone is welcome to add to this, im going back on the 02 now....LOL .....................jonny Did I type "Waist?"......LOL |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Jim R on Sep 6th, 2002, 5:16am Jonny, Do the O2 supply companies carry the bubblers? Also, the tubing is the same as aquarium filter/air pump tubing so if you do develop a crack you can use this to replace the tubing - it's cheap and effective. Make sure you get a non-rebreathing mask - this just happened to me - they gave me one that wasn't (it was missing a rubber disc on the side and I was getting room air along with the O2) I had to go in and explain it to the respiratory therapist - God knows why - you would think he would know the difference. Good advice Jonny! Thanks. Hope your CH/shadow got better. Jim R |

(smoking a cigarette DURING O2.... but..... it was very ....quick..... in 2 seconds the cigarette arrived at the filter... and more Never did this again BTW ....I'm not the ONLY stupid here...... also Bob Kipple did it! ...same results..... |

Post by jonny on Sep 6th, 2002, 7:59am Jim, If your getting medical 02 its probably comming from a med supply store, they should have it ($3-4) Hey Bill L, I just drove out to exit 4 on the Mass pike did ya hear me screaming your name as I went through Auburn?.......LMAO....ohwell, back to work ;D ..............jonny |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by oringkid on Sep 6th, 2002, 8:40am Ok, here is a question for ya. I tried looking it up on the net and couldn't find anything. What is the deal with helium filled latex balloons and oxygen. They don't allow them in hospital rooms when oxygen is in use. Why? Sherry |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by BILL_L on Sep 6th, 2002, 8:53am Jonny Is that why exit 10 was closed? Bill |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Drk^Angel on Sep 6th, 2002, 10:42am Actually Jim... The mask with only one rubber disk is still a non-rebreather mask. In fact... Most times, when you order a non-rebreather mask, this is the type you get, because the one port is left open as a safety. When the mask is fitted properly over the face, the about of air that enters the open port should be minimal, but the port can be blocked manually, or you can make your own little rubber disk for it, if you want to be doubly sure about it. I saw a site once that was selling the standard non-rebreather mask for like $2, and the one with two disks for over $3. PFDAN............................. Drk^Angel |

Post by Not4Hire on Sep 6th, 2002, 11:08am Here's a couple useful o2 links: http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=meds;action= display;num=1025929622;start=6 http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=meds;action= display;num=1014270746;start=2 Tip#1: good advice, jonny.....altho, I have fallen asleep with the mask on and don't think I woke up dead......had an empty tank and wished I was.... LOL Jim R....the two disc setup is a safety measure.....better to leave one off so if you DO fall asleep and run out of o2 you won't suffocate.....ambient air can enter the mask....... visions of the face-sucker from the Alien movie..... A NONREBREATHER mask has a bag....see pic on the link above |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Bob P on Sep 6th, 2002, 12:01pm I put duct tape over both of the exhale valves on my set-up. I push the mask tight against my face, squeeze the bag and inhale, then I release the bag, pull the bottom of the mask away from my face and exhale. Repeat. |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Jim R on Sep 6th, 2002, 1:45pm Hey guys - I'm an 'ole hand at this O2 stuff - like Jonny said - always cut the elastic strap off and then no danger of falling asleep with the mask on ! LOL! Really, Drk - I could feel (and tell) SIGNIFICANT amounts of room air were getting in through the open valve (the one with no rubber disc on it) and in fact did make a little latex disc to cover it (with MUCH better relief effects from the O2, I might add), and then decided since I'm paying for all ths shit, I was going to do down to the medical O2 supply place and get some extra discs (they didn't have spares) wherein they DID finally admit that the masks with teh two discs were really "true" non-rebreathers, as room air does get into the ones where the side ports were uncoverd (of course it does!!! - it ain't all coming up from teh bag when you breath in...) Anyway, just a hint to those of you whop have the masks with one uncovered port/valve - you may experience significant increase in CH relief by making sure that other port is covered too - but if you wear it in bed, make sure your straps are cut off so you can't fall asleep with on - PROLONGED 100% O2 CAN DAMAGE LUNGS! Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Drk^Angel on Sep 6th, 2002, 2:12pm I think the problem with the standard non-rebreather mask is that they were designed for respiratory patients breathing normally. I believe most clusterheads either take short, quick breaths, or like me take long, deep breaths (which btw completely deflates the bag, and causes even more outside air to come in through the ports). Maybe what we should do is design a special cluster non-rebreather mask, built with no ports, an extra large bag, a larger valve between the bag and mask, and a better seal around the face. Or maybe a scuba-like mask would work... Hmmmmmm... PFDAN.......................... Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Slammy on Sep 6th, 2002, 2:15pm Don't to forget to add the bubbler ( bong) to the design so I easily pour my vodka in there! ;D Slammy 8) |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by jonny on Sep 6th, 2002, 2:48pm Zaira, Can you get a non-rebreather mask?, that is what you need. Riccardo knows what it is, If you cant get one in Italy (thats where you are, right?...LOL) I will give one to Ricarrdo in Vancouver for you. DRK, Thats the reason to have a regulator that goes to 15 lpm, so when your in freak mode when you first get on you have plenty flowing. Slammy. I have a hole in my mask for the hose that leads to the two beer holding hat I wear when on 02....LOL ............jonny No, Bill L.....exit 10 was closed cause of the stink coming from Worchster (or from my shit spelling....LMAO) ;D |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Jim R on Sep 6th, 2002, 3:21pm Drk - I LIKE your ideas!! Tank on back, hoses (maybe a few broken ones for effect) leading to mouthpiece - could start a whole new look! LOL! And I think that's true about the current design of the masks...not many people - even those with severe respiratory diseases are on 100% O2 becasue it can be so caustic to the lungs. I know when I have a CH a breath it in as fast as I can - in big long deep breaths, and the bag I have (at 8 lpm) cannot keep up with my breathing sometimes when I have both ports/valves covered, but if I am resting and breath normally, I do fine with both covered and get much quicker and better relief (when it works, of course...) - Jim R |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Drk^Angel on Sep 6th, 2002, 3:27pm My flow is approx 12L/min, but when I take a deep breath, the bag goes flat at half breath. I have to force myself to slow my breaths, so that the O2 can keep up... PFDAN............................. Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by catlind on Sep 7th, 2002, 2:15pm To add to jonny's tips, when you first turn your regulator on, cover the bottom disc, the one that goes to the bag, that way, when you put the mask on you'll get a full bag of O2 right away. BTW, I have fallen asleep with the O2 on as well, the dramamamine and narcotics made me dozy and when I was able to sit still I ended up falling asleep....Clark woke me up and is scared I'll do it again while he's gone and there won't be anyone to wake me up hehe. Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by Jim R on Sep 7th, 2002, 3:40pm Cat, but you cut your strap off, right, so if you do fall asleep, it will fall away from your face? Now don't worry me.... Jim R |

Title: Re: Are you new to 02? Post by catlind on Sep 7th, 2002, 4:47pm Ummm actually I never knew I should until Jonny's post LOL. Only problem is when I get hit, my hands have to stay moving....It's too hard to just hold the mask with one hand...I can't keep an arm still long enough for them to get b/p readings on me when I go to ER, I just make sure that I don't lay down while I'm using it. Don't worry, once was enough, I now know better...I didn't realize there was any danger in falling asleep with one on til Clark told me, then I asked Ueli about it. So now I'm informed and won't make that mistake again. :) Cat |
