MedscapeWire Artificial Sphincter Effective in Fecal Incontinence Laurie Barclay, MD NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Apr 10 — An artificial anal sphincter improves quality of life in patients with fecal incontinence refractory to conventional therapies, according to a prospective interventional series published in the April issue of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum. "Severe anal incontinence is a distressing condition that has a major impact on the quality of life of afflicted patients," lead author Paul-Antoine Lehur, MD, PhD, from the Clinique Chirugicale II in France, says in a news release. Of 14 women and 2 men implanted with the Acticon Neosphincter, 11 had restored anorectal function at 2-year follow-up, both clinically and on manometry demonstrating increased maximal anal resting pressure. Postoperative improvement in quality of life was documented on a fecal incontinence assessment survey of lifestyle, coping behavior, depression/self-perception, and embarrassment. "The results show a clear impact of artificial anal sphincter implantation on quality of life as measured overall or in each of the four domains," Lehur says. Additional research should help confirm the long-term benefits of this relatively expensive device, which may provide a valuable alternative for severe fecal incontinence refractory to other treatments. Bob and Becky Duval say the large, yellow feline has more toes than any other cat in the world. The Duvals have submitted evidence they hope will earn Mooch a place in the Guinness Book of Records. "This is your 15 minutes ? suck it up," Bob DuVal said to Mooch as the feline struggled out of Becky Duval's lap. At the couple's home, a nervous Mooch padded defensively across the kitchen floor, avoiding visitors and the clicking camera. Those who manage to catch a glimpse of the cat before he dashes off are stunned when they see his toes. "Usually, their first remark is, 'Oh, my God, look at that cat's feet ? what's wrong with him?'" Becky DuVal said. DuVal said he was listening to the radio last week and heard about the world record for most toes on a cat, currently held by Paddles, a black cat in Ennismore, Ontario, who has 27.
