Title: Notice to all veterans
Post by d2a2 on Aug 31st, 2002, 1:52pm
Hi,  I haven't visited this site in quite a while and I hope everyone is doing well.
I became aware of medical assistance for veterans when a stranger approached me in a Shoney's restaurant at the check out and asked if I were a veteran. I answered yes and he asked if I were aware of medical AND prescription drug assistance for veterans. I told him I had only served 4 years and didn't think I qualified for any VA benefits.
He explained to me that the program was fairly recent and that the VA had not made much of an effort to inform veterans about it.
He asked if I had access to a computer and I replied yes. He asked that I put 1010EZ into my search and to take a look at the site.
He also explained that he was rather upset that the VA hadn't  made much effort to inform veterans of this program and that his goal was to inform one new veteran each day and that I was the one for that day.
I went to the site when I got an opportunity to see what it is about.
The 1010EZ search opened the VA website, www.va.gov.elig.
I learned that any veteran that served during specific periods since 1941 was eligible to receive assistance for medical expenses and prescription drugs regardless of income and regardless if it was service-connected or not.
I filled out an application on-line and sent it in. After about a month I hadn't heard from them so I gave them a call to find out my status. I was informed that they didn't have any record of my application. I then copied the form from their web site, filled it out again, made a copy of it, and mailed it along with a copy of my DD214. That was on July 27th, 2002. Yesterday, August 30, I received notification from the VA that I was approved and enrolled in the program.
I am passing this information along in hopes that someone else can be helped by it.
The form has a section for financial information to be filled out but it is NOT required unless you want the VA to pay 100% of your expenses. Without the financial info you will have to pay a $ 7.00 co-pay for prescription medicine. If you are completely broke it may be worth the effort to provide that information to them.
It also doesn't matter if you have any other health provider or not.
Please, if you are a veteran that has served any time in the military at any time since 1941, go to this site to see if you are eligible for benefits and pass this information along to any veteran you think may be qualified.
Sorry about the long-winded post but I think the possible benefits are worth it.
Regards,
d2a2
