Title: Off The CH Subject, Gotta Vent..............
Post by KingOfPain on Aug 29th, 2002, 1:19am
I know this has nothing to do with CH but I want to warn you all.   Please read this post.

After 10 years with Shelter (Mutual) Insurance (auto) with never having a claim or even as much as a parking ticket, Shelter sent me a letter that stated they "regret" they cannot continue my coverage.

My soon to be ex-wife got into an accident last Dec. (she didn't even get a ticket) & now they are claiming that one "at fault" (hers) accident is justification to cancel me. Shelter had already raised my payment $50 every 6 months, which I paid in April of this year (my normal 6 month payment period).  No one was hurt, just minor damage to the other car she clipped. I wasn't even involved, I was at work at the time of the accident.

I spoke to the Senior Underwriter Beverly Basye (who's name & signature was on the notification) to get some kind of explanation. Her phone number is: (573) 214-4764. She said " We can cancel you for what ever reason we see fit, even for one accident in 10 years". She had a real [couldn't give a crap] attitude & didn't care about MY perfect driving for the last 10 years or the fact of all the premiums I had paid with no claims for anything.  Bev didn't "regret" a thing. Again, this was the one & only claim on my insurance in 10 years. My soon to be ex-wife also had a clean driving record.

If you have Shelter insurance (or know someone that does), I advise you (or them) to dump Shelter insurance fast & get another insurance company before it is too late! Also, please pass the word. Companies like this don't deserve customers or to be in business.

If anyone knows how I could do something about this besides get another insurance coverage company (which I have already), please let me know.

Thank you for letting me rant, it just really p*sses me off that these insurance companies can do what they want with no regulation. After all, auto insurance is mandatory, shouldn't regulation of insurers be too?

I hope I have not offended anyone with my off-CH subject matter & if so, I am sorry. Just trying to look out for the " CH family".
If you are a Shelter employee, representative, or agent..... I think you should re-evaluate your employment choice.

Thank you for your time, KingOfPain.   : - { )

KOP... Have you secured other insurance yet.  Dunno about your state, but here, if you get dropped by an insurance carrier, you could fall into the high-risk list, which makes it difficult to get any insurance, and if you do... The premiums will be like double.  Good luck!

I have Geico, and they allow (in my state mind you) upto $1000 in claims in I believe a two year period before taking actions on your coverage, and I think they have clauses against dropping coverage unless the number or amount of claims are overly excessive.  I got into a fender bender last year... It was totally my fault (narrow intersection, turning right, didn't see the other car because of sunglare, turned out a little far, and hit the corner of their bumper.  Which reminds me... I now don't trust minivans, because a vehicle that big shouldn't have bumpers that dent in enough on a 5 mph impact to break the headlamp cover and crack the plastic fender cover.  My bumper wasn't even scuffed)  Geico took care of it all.  My premiums were even lower on the next renewal.

Try filing a claim with the Better Business Bureau.  While it would be a lot of red tape they would know what the laws are in your state and know if you had a right to sue or anything.  They also keep track of the number of complaints that they have received on companies and make recomendations based on the customer feedback.

I had a problem with my insurance company and I took it to the top. I found the CEO/Presidents name and phone number on their web site and called his office directly and then followed up with a letter by fax. My situation was dealt with immediately. I also sent a copy of my letter to the State Insurance division.

Hope this helps.

Your story reminds me of what happened to a friend of mine several years ago.  They had been with All State for 15 years,  it had been 13 years since they had filed any type of claim.  When they didn't receive their renewal form they called and were told that due to the length of time since a claim the chance of them having an accident was high and therefor All State would not renew their coverage.  Obtaining reasonable priced insurance became a problem.
Hope all works out for you.

Well that is a true pisser .... now your insurance can get cancelled for NOT HAVING AN ACCIDENT.  It's been a while since I filed a claim ..... I am gonna have to go out and find someone who is willing to slam me in the rear ... That way I can keep my converage !!!!

Well,  rear slamming certainly got my attention.  :P   I think back to another thread where lab coats were required for scientific research . ;D

Couldn't help my self -- or maybe I need to help myself. Must ponder the possibilities.

Damn... It took NancyM less than an hour to get two responses to having someone slam her in the rear.  Maybe they can both do it at the same time... That reminds me of a movie I say once... Uh...  Never mind.

I'm in neutral now.  That was a close one.  Being in that condition with no where to go.  Yes, accidents do happen.

Golly, the boys seem to be pretty twitterpated right now, and I thought that only happened in spring!

Ok, how badly did that show my age?  I would have thought Disney would be above age limits LOL.

Thank you all for your replies (past, present & future).  ;)  Notable are NancyMcFree's & ChristineL's advice. I will follow up on that advice & "we will see". Again, I think it rather bogus to dump me after 10 years of no claim status (except for what I already explained) but what do you do. Yes, I have obtained other insurance through another source at a cheaper rate, like I believe.....everything happens for a reason.
I just wish there was a justified reason for the "beast", then we could all be cured or maybe get some relief &/or answers. My wish for us all!
PF days & nights to you all, thanks again for your response to my thread.
