Title: Rugged Face Post by HypnoticFreddy on Aug 23rd, 2002, 9:11am What is this I read about clusterheads having rugged faces? I have a pleasant non-rugged face. What about women who suffer from CHs? I am pretty sure they would not take too kindly to being told that they have rugged faces. Surveys really bother me. >:( As to another post, how many of you clusterheads have addictive and/or compulsive behavior? I certainly do, and I wonder if THAT is common in clusterheads. |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Bob P on Aug 23rd, 2002, 9:52am Don't forget that they large square jaws, hazel eyes and are usually large men being meekly led in to the doctor's office by a small, forceful wife. Truthfully, I do wonder about eye color. The cluster survey seems to show a large number of hazel and blue eyes. I wonder what the normal percentage of these color eyes is in the general population? Not that the color of the eyes has anything physically to do with CH but eye color is a genetic thing and related to your roots. It could perhaps be indicitive of a relationship to area of origin or nationality. |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by SFChris on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:05am Bob, The first thing my doctor said to me when I explained my symtoms was "oh oh, you have green eyes and present as a classic cluster headache sufferer". He never really explained the green eye comment, but mentioned that in his experience it was very common. The WebMD site on Clusterheadaches mentions this as well. I thought it might be a coincidence. Chris |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by HypnoticFreddy on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:13am Also I stand at a whopping 5'5. I read that most clusterheads are tall. I do have green eyes though. Surveys are lame. If the headaches killed, more research would be done towards their cause and treatment. |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by nancyc on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:16am This is weird...Bob P, did you know alot of alcoholics i see at the drug center, have blue eyes? The patients and I have talked about this alot.. Strange? who knows..But if we have compulsive personalities and are known to drink alot..maybe there is a connection here...But rugged faces, I think NOT... ;Dnancyc |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Melissa on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:34am ok, explain this: My clusters first started appearing at the age of 16. My eyes up till that point were a chocolate brown. From the age of 16 on, they began to turn hazel. Now they are mostly green, with a little brown toward the pupil. Why? ;D Mel |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Bob P on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:42am I don't know how accurate this si but these are the the only eye color % for the US that I could find on the web. I'll list them with the US% and then the CH%: brn/blk - US 66%, CH 33% blu/gry - US 18%, CH 33% hazel - US 10%, CH 19% grn - US 6%, CH 11% clusterheads have only 1/2 the expected % of brown/black eyes and almost double the expected % of blue/grey/hazel/green. What does this all mean? Melissa is strange! |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by maria on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:49am Hey all, I have an article here on Cluster Headaches that suggests patients with cluster headaches have distinctive facial characteristics. These include a lion-like face, ruddy complexion, deep furrows on the face, vertical forehead creases, asymmetrical facial creases, orange peel facial skin and broad chin and skull. Patients are generally tall and rugged looking. Distinctive personality features were also noted in CH'ers: they they present as a "leonine-mouse syndrome" - they are timid people with increased dependency needs who nevertheless needed to appear manly. The article goes on to describe these patients as ambitious, efficient, goal-oriented, hard-driving and compulsive, but nevertheless insecure and lacking in self-confidence. Interesting, huh? Maria |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by HypnoticFreddy on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:54am Personally, I think the stats are a bunch of crap. I believe that clusterheadaches are not understood, as with many other types of headaches. The mysteries of the mind. The mysteries of the universe. Why are we here!?!?!? |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Melissa on Aug 23rd, 2002, 10:57am Gee, thanks Bob ;D OMG, a CH characteristic is a "lion like face"??? OMG, Riccardo!! The MELTIGER!! :o Rotflmao!!!! |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Drk^Angel on Aug 23rd, 2002, 12:19pm I've also read multiple studies that have disproved the CH physical characteristics. Those characteristids were originally observed in a small study performed when clusters were first being recognised, recent studies have not seen the validity of them. PFDAN............................. Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Bob P on Aug 23rd, 2002, 12:54pm The percentage of eye colors that I list are from a currently ongoing survey with over 11,000 responses from clusterheads. I see much validity in the numbers but what it means about clusters I have no idea. |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Drk^Angel on Aug 23rd, 2002, 12:59pm I wasn't talkin' about the eye colours... I was talkin' about the cat-like appearance, rugged looking, tall, thick skinned, etc, etc, etc... PFDAN......................... Drk^Angel |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Samiam on Aug 23rd, 2002, 1:56pm Well I guess I'm not the norm then...I'm 5'5" dark brown eyes, porcelain skin (not a wrinkel on it) round face, I don't smoke and maybe a glass of wine or a cosmo once a week. I remember all to well that the first neuro I went to told me, there was no way I had cluster's I didn't fit the mold....LOL....But the funny thing is...My bio father had blue eyes, heavy drinker, heavy smoker, rugged skin, and a squard jaw...and of course he was a male.....and as far as I know never had migraines nor cluster's....DO YOU THINK THERE SOMETHING TO THIS?...Sami |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by oringkid on Aug 23rd, 2002, 4:36pm Here's something to throw in the mix too. Blue eyes, which I have by the way, are generally weaker than the others. I have TERRIBLE vision. VERY near sighted. When in high school, I was fascinated by the dominant and recessive gene stuff especially related to eyes. Also, I have noticed although have no proof that many, many intelligent people have bad vision. Weird huh? Like when I worked at a stock brokerage there were a LOT of VERY intelligent people there and almost ALL of them wore glasses! Sherry |

LMAO! ;D WTF??? ??? Here I was this tiny pre-teen GIRL! LMAO ROF. Rugged face, yeah and then they woke up! :D Anyway, let me get composure here (ROFLMAO!!! ;D) That sort of data is beat up about as dead as a doornail. Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by Charlie on Aug 23rd, 2002, 9:34pm I'm 6' 2" with blue eyes and florid or reddish complexion. I have no idea what this means. The surveys are skewed as they apply to people with access to puters. By the way, I wonder about the eyeglass thing. Intelligent people are prone to bad vision? Perhaps intelligent people usually will do what has to be done includiung eye wear. Just a possibility. I'm also an epileptic with acute hearing. Many epileptics have extraordinary hearing. I asked the board about CHers with better than average hearing. Many say this applies as well. This has nothing to do with anything accurate or scientific, I should add. Really rugged old Charlie |

Title: Re: Rugged Face Post by whart on Aug 24th, 2002, 2:11am Actually, i just had a first visit to another neuro- Dr. today, at the Cornell Med. Center in NYC. Very brite young guy, candid, willing to discuss the myths as well as the limits of conventional medical therapy. He did mention an early study that characterized the typical sufferer as looking like the Marlboro Man. I saw a reference to this in Graham, circa 1972, as a citation to the medical info article posted by the founder of this site. I am obviously skeptical, but i found it interesting. Does anybody have a copy of this article.? I tried to trace it on the web, where it appeared as a reference in a footnote, but got to Medline, which is apparently subsciption based. |
