Title: FINALLY!
Post by Night_Owl on Aug 16th, 2002, 6:35pm
Guess what everyone?  I just got into a fight with my mom, but the good news is that my dad came to the rescue!  He is making me a doc's appt.  on Monday!  I will be in by next week.  Any advice on what to say or demand?

Great news!  Best advise I have is to print as much stuff from here, and OUCH to take with you as you can... Especially about meds.  Be armed with info just in case the doc isn't knowledgeable about CH.  Good luck!

good news on doc owl.  As everyone has said, print out the info from here and the OUCH site.

Oxygen works for many here and I urge you to try it.  Make sure you get a non rebreather mask.  I wish I could find the link that shows picture of it!  It would be great if you can get relief without having to take pills!

The more informed you are, the more you can help the doc help YOU.

Good luck.  Things will get better.

:)Keeping fingers crossed that the 02 will do the trick for you.

owl, preventative medicine can take a while to kick in, so try and be patient!  The 02 is used as abortive, but it's good idea to try and head off the cluster with preventative too.  the thing with clusters is patience and perseverence and KNOWLEDGE!

Is your printer crankin yet? ;)

What wonderful news......wishing you much luck with the visit.

Advice from me would just be to have documented history of pain and headaches you have had...and then provide the doc with info from here.

What kind of doc are you seeing?  is it a neuro or regular doc of some kind?

Be prepared that they may ask many questions about the kinds of headaches you are having, your feelings, etc. etc..........maybe wanting to run many tests also, but please don't get discouraged AND DON"T leave there without them giving you at least SOMETHING in meds to help out with the pain.

I'll be hoping for you dearie, good luck and remember we care.  Let us know the results!

Well, since my dad is military, it will be a reg doc on base.  They have been really good about refering you to specialist now, so if I don't get the results that I want with this one, I will be sent to a neuro.  And thanks for the links there sqeek.

This message is for your mom, please ask her to read it.

Madam-
This message board is not populated by mental cases with nothing better to do. We all share the same malady, and this is where we come to help each other survive. Your son is not a hypochondriac; if he has CH, he's dealing with something you can't imagine. You remember childbirth, I'm sure; try to imagine that pain in your head several times a day, and that is no exaggeration. Neurologists "in the know" describe it as the worst pain a human can feel. Your son is dealing with a monster, and needs your support.
I had a friend die recently from cancer. It came and took him and there was nothing he could do about it. CH is worse, because it doesn't kill you; it makes you kill yourself - hence the name "suicide headaches".
GET your son medical attention NOW; GIVE him your love and support. You could very well have to live with the consequences.

If you told her you were contacting people on the internet that probably made her nervous... believe me Im a mom... Its hard to realize that your kids are sick or have a problem... especially one they cant see or have never heard of... cut your mom some slack she will get it and then bring her to our supporters corner we'll be waiting... Good luck.  I am proud of you for helping yourself... ():)  ree

yeah, I just told her that I found this website and that we all exchange treatment ideas, and support.  It is not that she doesn't care, I know she does, she is just really busy with work and everything.  The more I talk to her about this, the more she seems to listen and be interested.  I got the docs appt. so that's a start.

Hey you really are a Night Owl... I have one more thing to say   AIN'T EASY BEING A MOM... You seem like a great kid  though, wise beyond your years... I will be curious to know what the doc does for you... Where are you guys stationed???   ree

Title: Re: FINALLY!
Post by Night_Owl on Aug 17th, 2002, 12:20am
My dad is stationed at Hill AFB in Utah.  Been here for quite a while.  I don't question how hard it is to be a parent.  I am sure it is hard.  Having to think before doing anything, wondering what consequences your actions have.  Yes, that is nothing that I want to experience anytime soon.  Being a teenager isn't all that great either.  Especially in the world today.  And this whole head thing is just is just fueling the fire.  But it's alright, this too shall pass.  Maybe not the head thing, but I can't stay 15 forever.  I only have another month!

Good news and good luck.

For your mom from a 56 year old cluster headache sufferer:

Cluster headaches have nothing whatsoever to do with any kind of headache with which you are likely familiar.  They are excruciating, intense and debilitating.  Unlike other headaches, one cannot lie down for relief. They have been calle suicide headaches for a reason.  Understand that "cluster headache" is a terrible misnomer. It's an old designation. It's an acute pain syndrome that is indescribable.

Good luck

Charlie

Owl, reading your posts is sure taking me down memory lane!  I'm 41 now, but started with the headaches as a young teenager.  Everything you are saying , well, me and my family went through the exact same thing.  The only difference is that 25 years ago, there was not much known about the illness and there was NO support group ANYWHERE.

thanks to dj and many other terrific people, you have a better chance at early intervention and you and your family have a place to go that will help you like NOTHING else!

Ree is right.  It's not easy being a mom.  She carries the burdens of the entire family.  she will come around.  Take one step at a time.  Also, let her know that there is a place here where she can come and talk to others who have family members with cluster headaches.  They will help her cope, and they will help her understand more about your illness.

If and when your mom is ready, ask her to visit the supporters corner.  She is going to need help, too. :)

Well wishes to you AND your family. :)Kim

Svenn you're funny.  I am not sure wich one was more glad to see my dad, me or my mom.  My mom and I are two totally different people.  My dad is helping me deal with it more than my mom is.  I just decided to leave her out of it.  She obviously doesn't have time to worry, so I won't make her.

Night - Just a stab in the dark here...but it might be that your mom doesn't want to think about her baby being in pain, especially pain that she doesn't know how to stop...it's called denial...my mother lived there for a long time...and still does in some respects... I had thought exactly what you are thinking now...she just doesn't have time, she just doesn't care...that wasn't the case with my mom and perhaps the same is true for your mom...let her know what she can do to help you...leave pages you have printed out from this site around the house...she may pretend not to be interested, but I am willing to bet you that when you aren't around, she'll read them...involve her in the process of managing your pain...give her the chance to do right...she couldn't have raised a girl (sorry) as compassionate as you with a heart of ice...just my humble opinion

Peace,
Georgia

LETS ALL REMEMBER, NITE OWL IS FEMALE ;D

Great news Owl, Sorry for venting previously but we all know being ignored really sucks and doesn't help much.

Keep us informed ;)

Good luck,

Jimbo.........

Thankyou Jimbo.  That's ok, I vent also, as you can tell.  It is irritating being ignored.  But they don't know what it's like, obviously.  I think she doesn't think it is anything serious.  And that's fine, she can think that.  She doesn't know what it's like.

Either did my mom.  NOW - she knows different.

Its not a contest.  And it doesn't end - EVER - as far as I've seen.  Try and get everyone on the same page.  try and make a negative a positive.  Ya got the tools chickie. ;)

Lots of people don't know what it is like (to suffer from clusters) ... it just means they don't understand you ... it doesn't mean they don't love you.  It's your job to educate them (if you really want them to know what is going on) ........and then wala .......we have the meeting of the custer mind with the non-cluster mind and all is right with the world.  I think the idea of leaving stuff around for your mom to read was great.  She will read it ........ she loves you and wants to know what is going on.
