How many of you take anti-depressants for other reasons than CH's?

me, I've been onWellbutrin SR since last year for depression.  I used to be on Zoloft from 1994-2001.  Those were the most numb years of my life!

Hi Mel.............Paxil baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad !! I'm a supporter here and used ta take em......weight gain was my big deal with most I could not handle. Paxil......well that was nuther story......that stuff can rob you of all emotions till ya try and quit takein it. Most antidepressants made me sick........stupid me.......there's that side effect queen comein outa me agin ! They can work tho.....jus recognize the signs when they aren't !!! But they did help with the panic attacks and all that jazz ( and gettin thru sum bad shit ect stuff) but sum created new problems in the long run. Pam that has walked the paxil walk  Tongue

I personally have never taken them. However, my sister took wellbutrin to help stop smoking.

She started showing signs of liver disease.  She jumped right off that ship !!!

Liver enzymes went nutzo !!!!   Guess everyone is different tho.  May not affect all the same way, I am sure.

I've been on several anti-depressants over the last year.  Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor and now Celexa.  I'm also taking Clonazepam for anxiety.  My depression and anxiety are NOT cluster related.

I take Effexor for panic attacks, not CH related, I was on Prozac years ago for anxiety, so no depression, just a lot of stress...I hated Prozac by the way, Like Cootie said, Prozac robbed me of any emotion, I wasn't stressed out anymore, but totally numb to any other feelings as well, I like the Effexor, it keeps me sain, and boy do I need that right now!

ya know it's funny, I also get anxiety/panic attacks myself, they come usually in 2 month spurts.  Doc Rx's me lorazepam (sp?)  a generic valium I think?  Either way it helps, doesn't screw me up, just stops my mind from racing.

Jean, what dosage was your sister taking?  I'm only on 100mg a day, very low dosage.  I read the whole insert, must have been your sis was one of the unfortunate ones who got a rare side effect?  How long was she on it for?  I started taking it in Aug of last year, then went off it in Nov. (didn't want to chance anything with my pregnancy), now have been back on it since the day after my baby was born. (almost 3 months ago)

I am certain that she took it 2x's daily.  It was 100mg.  So, twice the dosage you take.  She was on it for about 9 or 10 months. She always did have a hard time quitting the smoking. The doc told her the wellbutrin would help with any anxiety and/or depression effects from the nicotine withdrawal.
She really got a double whammie!!! She quit smokin, but gained alot of weight.......Then you talk about depressed!!!!  She was a basket case.....LOL

However, she is a bit sensitive to alot of meds.  I think as long as things are checked out periodically, all should be ok. The high rate of liver enzymes she had was detected by a regular blood work-up.

All for nothing....she went back to smoking, still can't get rid of the extra pounds.

I was put on zoloft cause I was having panic attacks on the subway especially when they would stall and it would be packed with people.  i was taking zoloft on 9/11 and was in the City when it happened, i heard the first plane flying towards the trade center right before it hit and was panicking hard but never cried through any of that because of the zoloft.  i didn't think that was normal especially when people were jumping out of the trade center and stuff and families were asking if anybody had seen there loved ones and holding up photos.  it was so fucked up.  so i started to wean myself off of it cause i didn't feel like i was feeling at all.

I've used St. John's Wort in winter to minimize SADness (Seasonal Affective Disorder)  I thought it worked, but it could have been the placebo effect.  (If I had the wherewithal sp? to notice I was depressed, I may have already stopped myself from sliding.)  But SAD is very mild compared to the real thing.

I used Wellbutrin (Zyban) to successfully quit smoking over 3 years ago.

In 2001 I was diagnosed with ADD (don't care whether you think it exists and don't care whether you agree with the methods used to diagnose it, not trying to be belligerant here, just keeping on topic).

My ADD symptoms (pre-diagnosis) were magnified with menopause (surprisingly MENopause has nothing to do with MEN, why don't they call it womenopause?).  When I told my Gyn about it, he put me on Prozac.  Somewhere along the line I also tried Zoloft.

My neuro put me on Wellbutrin when I was diagnosed with ADD.  She changed me to Paxil about 3 months ago as treatment for migraines.  I'm doing well on Paxil.  Don't know if its adding to my weight problem.

But (and here is the REALLLLY important scoop  Grin) Prozac, Zoloft, Wellbutrin (and Topamax) all killed my sex drive.  I'm relieved to report that on Paxil I've experienced a return of libido.  And that's all I'm going to share on that topic!

...like allayez, YMMV (your mileage may vary), but I took paxil for three days and felt like I had *crawlies* under my skin.

Zoloft turned me into an emotionless zombie with a TV addiction: JJROZ (Judge Judy rocks on Zoloft)...

now Wellbutrin: I think they should put it in the water.... works for me... but expensive...

yep, YMMV.....
