Just FYI....I just got back from MHNI and Chelsea hospital and the doctors there say that Imitrex CAN and WILL cause rebounds if used frequently ( Like I do ).
See what i've been doing on my other post "Back from MHNI".

Hey UE,
I went to MHNI during '94-'95 when I worked for a music dist. co. in Milan, MI outside of Ypsi and Saline. They are VERY good there, and are largely responsible for me getting my life back the FIRST time CH ruined my life. Under the care of Dr Weintraub, I was on Lithium and Verapamil, and Indomethacin. I did o2 therapy with success too. Unfortunately, I moved back to IL in 95 and in 98 I went chronic and the previous treatment was uneffective. Tried all kinds of stuff, including Imitrex injections and nasal spray, which didn't seem to work.

After a suicide attempt earlier this year, my attacks seemed to decrease until a month ago. They have graduated from 1-4 attacks a week to 1 or 2 in a 24 hour period, and the last few days they have been hitting me ALOT. Gonna start another headache journal ( I recommend this for everyone, as you may be able to distinguish the pattern and have more effect with abortives.) I tried Imitrex injections again this time and they have WORKED! After reading your post about rebound, wondering if maybe the 'Trex pissed the demon off and made him increase the attacks. Not gonna worry, I go to the Doc in 3 days. Demanding o2 and Imitrex from him. Might even re-trace steps and try the Verapamil again too. Anything to keep this insane pain at bay.

Peace and pf days and nights,
Carl D

My doc said that Imitrex could cause rebound headaches ....... I never had a rebound headache ......... only a sleep bound headache !!!!!!!!!!  If I took a nap ...... bonus headache !!!!! I did about 30 injections (full 6 mg) in 20 - 25 days .......... never a rebound.

Imitrex caused rebounds while I was taking it. UCLA was the place that figured out half my CH were rebounds. They said eating Imitrex 5 to 6 times daily wasn't normal. With CHs who's NORMAL?

Always believed each person's body chemistry was a factor when meds are concerned. Still do. My experience was not good when I took too much Imitrex. Found a dosage that worked for me. Journal is a great idea. Created one and it helped identify what worked and what didn't; then age factor came into play. Attacks became less severe in my late 50's and amount of IM needed also became less. Difficulty with this process is that it takes many yrs. and in the meantime the Beast is banging in my head. Be patient and be postive is all I can say. Peaceful days and nights to all.

I used the 50mg tablets and the nasal sprays. Never liked the needles after DHE shots. Ibuprofen is a big cause for rebounds also.

Hi clusterheads as a new member I guess it only proper to let some of my story be told.In regard to IM and Rebounds... Yes I have experienced them with the use if IM. In May of this year I was suffering from the "worst cycle of my life" this lasted for about three months. Every day 2-4 a day and man was I in He DOUBLE toothpicks... in 30 days I had used something like 65 injections... the nurse told me so as I went on a Quest to find IM, and she called my pharmacy... Didn't realize it was that much nor did I really care all I knew is thats what I needed and thats what worked... anyway It got so bad that it could not get any worse... I was waking up almost exactly 30 min into rest then the demon hit while I was asleep and never missed... this led to days withiut sleep, cause I knew what was in store for me after 30 min into sleep. anyway it got real bad. So bad I called the office and asked for prayer. That night the cycle broke... Yes imitrex can cause rebounds and their worse than the cluster themself in my opinion... My cycle continues at the "Normal" rate and am using a preventative now that is barely keeping the demon out. Verapamil at 480mg in the am is used to prevent CH in my case at one time I was up to almost 800 perday. O2 therapy was also a godsend for me and I still use it at 10L for 15 min. This hass drastically reduced the Im intake which reduces the rebounds in my opinion. Also this appears to be a great place to be and am glad I finally found it...keep up the good work clusterheadaches.com... SURF

Well...I'm just saying that's what they are saying...rebound city ! I have been taking 2 - 8 Imitrex injections everyday for about 3 years now. I believe I used  $70,000 worth of it ... or more ... last year alone. I've had clusters for 15 years and have been using the shots every since they came out. I honestly believe I've used more injections than ANY body else ! That's no joke. Is it the shots that are keeping me going like this? Screw going through the ha's without something GOOD for pain. I just aint doin' it. I'll keep taken em' til they stop or I do !
