Topomax at 100mg with 360mg Verapamil a day worked for me. Didn't have but a few breakthrough headaches on that combo. It has side effects, but stopped the CH's. Some people it doesn't work for and they can't tolerate the side effects. Everyone is different, but it's worth a shot!

| Methadone has been reported as a choice by others, being a phamacutical it would likley be safer than the BIG H. I'm not sure of your question however. ??? Lee

I've been on topamax since 1999 and have been in remission (with breakthroughs and a "few" seiges) since that time. I'm on a maintenance level of 100mg per day (I take at bedtime), but when HAs hit I have to up dosage till they subside. Short term memory loss is a side effect, but writing yourself notes is a small price to pay for the relief from CH. With topamax I've gotten off all other drugs except when HAs hit and I keep Cafagot and Phenergan for that. Topamax has let me have a life again. I was BAD chronic (8-12 HAs a day for years). Hugs BD

On this board I have read both horror and success stories about Topagigo. Folks have indicated that a sloooow entrance with it may be very important. I have NO experience with it other than what I have read here. Yer story will add to the database. Doesn't that make you feel special? Walk in the sunshine den

Due to the way a doc (friggin idiot) precribed it for me, I got damn near EVERY side effect listed. Den is correct, it should be dosed small and built up small until you reach 100 mg (typical). I read somewhere that the correct dosage is 15mg (I have never seen 15mg pills) for a week, then up it by 15 mg each week until you hit 90mg...then hit 100mg. I did not read anywhere that the dosage should stop being progressed when it becomes effective. I can tell you this...25mg, to 50 mg, to 100mg was WAY too fast (for me). Also, I read that it can take up to 8 weeks before you notice any reduction in severity/frequency. I did not make it that long due to the side effects. Another important note...if you have to come off of Topamax for whatever reason, the dosage down should be slow as well. Otherwise, you open yourself up to siezures (sp). Good luck on it, keep us posted! Chris

Topamax should be incrimented in 25mg intervals. Max dose is 600mg which I tried. My neuro says you need around 200mg to be theraputic. You need to decrease slowly off of it also because it can cause seizures this is correct. I have tried a low dose of methadone 10mg in am and 10 mg in pm and have had sucess being pain free for ll months with that. You may want to try that instead of the heroin. What ever you choose there are many options beside heroin. You never have to use. Dilaudid in low doses has also givin me relief in the past also. All perscribed by a dr. where there is saftey. Please be careful trying to medicate yourself. You run many risks.

I have a person very close to me who started taking prescription OxyContin after having a back injury. As time went on, he need higher and higher doses, which the doc was happy to prescribe. Within a relatively short period of time, he was helplessly addicted. This doc never even looked at an X-ray. All he wanted was his $90.00 per month office fee and he was willing to write a prescription. When this person was in a financial bind and asked for credit for a week, the doc said get lost. No concern for the probable life threatening seizures......no advice.....just get lost. He wanted to quit, but couldn't on his own....he became more ill everyday until he couldn't stand the shakes, nausea, stomach cramps, headaches, muscle aches, etc. and went to the ER before seizing.. No long term help there. Went to pain management docs trying to be weaned off, but he screwed up by using street drugs again and they stopped treating him. After much self-hate and thousands of dollars, he went to a Methadone clinic, where he has been under treatment now for over a year. They have just started an extremely slow tapering down. It will take forever to come completely off. He has friends who started out the same way, but most of them are still heavy users. They have family (cousins, friends, you name it) go to the doc with false pains, get a prescription and give it to them. What I am trying to say is.......be ever so careful because not all docs care if you get addicted or not. Methadone is the hardest drug to come off of, according to what I have read and been told. It does give one his life back without being high.....just needs it to feel normal, hold down a job and carry on a somewhat normal life. After he comes all off of it, he needs another type of treatment to get the receptors healthy again in his brain. Without these receptors functioning properly again, you will never feel like you did before drugs. Of course I know that there are illnesses that absolutely require the taking of pain relieving drugs, but they are not at all helpful for the great majority of cluster headache sufferers.
