"My suggestion to you is to start drinking heavily." My favorite line from Animal House. What about reloading Windoze? Do you CD's for that. I dispise WinME... You could purchase WinXP and have some place like CompUSA instal the new OS. It's only money. You don't need a new machine you need to re-load software. Tom--who is trying to heppp da Coots.

Lee- What's wrong with a manual re-load of the drivers? Or using a generic CD ROM driver to get her going? Then use the burner specific driver. TomM

Dear Coots I havnt seen your confuser, so I cannot be absolutly sure, but it sounds like your CD Drive is fried. I think the simplest and cheapest thing to do would be to replace it. Mind ya dont go buy one on my say so, cos like I said I cant be sure. If ya have freinds in the know or can borrow one, replace it and see if that helps. Changing the CD Drive is a pretty simple matter of pulling out 3 cables, unscrewing the screws that hold the drive in place and removing it. Put the replacement CD Drive in its place, screw in the screws and plug in the 3 cables. NB: Switch the PC off first. Also note carefully the orientation of your cables. The IDE cable (flat one with 16 little cables inside) has a red marking on one side, and the power cable has a red cable on one side. In 99.9% of CD DRives, these two reds go side by side. PS: ME is the Mother of all F#ckups. I would recomend ditching it at some time in the futre for the more stable 98SE.

Ya, I think coots has got a bad burner, same thing happened to me, I emailed her to see if she can pull the cables herself. Badfly, check out this site for a program that replaces 98 and me's bad shell with a better one. I have done this until I can get a real OS, Linux, http://www.litepc.com/
